EPCC XC Men’s Team Back to Back National Champs; Women place 2nd

On Saturday, the El Paso Community College (EPCC) Men’s Half Marathon team repeated as National Champions at the 19th annual National Junior College held at Ascarate Park. 

The men’s team was led by Gideon Cheplak who finished in 2nd place followed by Dennis Kiptoo (3), Elias Loriposia (4) and Bradley Makuvire (5). All of these runners were named to the All-American Team.

The women’s team, who finished in 2nd place overall, was led by Everlyn Kemboi who finished in 2nd place. Kemboi was named to the All-American Team.

 The NJCAA Half Marathon Championship was hosted by EPCC as part of its 50th Anniversary Celebration. EPCC will also host the 21st annual race in 2021.

EPCC Men’s Cross Country Team wins Regional Championship, Gideon Cheplak Places First

The El Paso Community College men’s cross-country team won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region V Cross Country Championship.

Tejano runner Gideon Cheplak triumphed in the men’s 8K races. Everlyn Kemboi led the Tejanas with a 3rd place finish.

This is the 2nd year in a row the men have won the Region V race.

Up next for the EPCC Cross Country teams is the NJCAA National Championship on November 9 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The season culminates with the Half Marathon Championships on November 23 at Ascarate Park in El Paso

EPCC Men’s Cross Country wins meet in California

The El Paso Community College (EPCC) men’s cross country team won the 29th Vanguard Invitational competing against 17 other schools.

EPCC men took the first four positions in their race, while the women finished in 2nd place in their race.

The Tejanos were led by Gideon Cheplak who finished 1st in the 8K race with a time of 23.55.

The Tejanas were led by reigning National Champion, Everlyn Kemboi who finished 1st with a time of 17:09 in the 5K race. Teammate Francisca Jebor finished in 2nd place.

The Women are currently ranked 2nd in the nation and the Men are ranked 4th in the most recent US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Poll.

Next up for the Cross Country Teams is the University of the Southwest Invite in Hobbs, New Mexico on October 18.

This season will lead up to EPCC hosting the 2019 NJCAA Half Marathon Championship on November 23rd as the finale of its year-long 50th anniversary celebration.

EPCC Men Receive Highest Ranking Ever; Teams Continue to Earn National Attention

As the El Paso Community College (EPCC) Cross Country men’s and women’s teams continue their winning ways, coaches and others are beginning to take notice.

Both teams are now in the top five rankings in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Poll of October 17, 2018 for Division 1 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) teams.

The teams are coming off a very successful meet at the University of California Riverside Highlander Invitational. They competed against Division 1, 2 and 3 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) universities.

The Tejanos are ranked third in this week’s poll, the highest ranking in their history. The men finished fifth at the Highlander Invitational with EPCC athlete Gideon Cheplak winning the race.

The women are ranked second for the third poll in a row. The Tejanas placed fourth at the Highlander Invitational.

Next on the schedule, EPCC will compete at the NJCAA Region V Championship in Ranger, Texas on October 27, 2018.  For more information about the NJCAA rankings, visit the website.

EPCC Runner wins Cross Country Event in California

El Paso Community College (EPCC) Men’s Cross country team member, Gideon Cheplak won the University of California at Riverside Highlander Invitational on October 13, 2018.

Cheplak’s time for the 8K race was 24m: 24s. Over 250 runners participated in the men’s race from universities and colleges all over the southwest. The Tejanos’ team finished fifth overall.

Everlyn Kemboi, who finished seventh in the 5K race, led the women’s team with a time of 17m: 18s. The Tejanas’ team finished fourth overall.

The EPCC men and women’s teams consistently have been ranked nationally in the top five by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Next on the schedule, EPCC will compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region V Championship at Ranger, Texas on October 27, 2018.
