Go10 officials say that crews are working these multi-hour closures in order to be “finished with all major construction items – such as bridge building at Sunland Park and pavement replacement along North Mesa – before December.  It’s not an easy deadline to hit.  It’s only five months away; but, we’re pushing hard to make it happen so we can get the heck out of your way. “

TxDot/Go10 Detours, Construction for Week of June 3rd

Crews on the Go10/TxDoT project are gearing up for busy June. For up-to-the-minute information, you can follow TxDoT on Twitter: Twitter or sign up for email alerts. For GO10 alerts, simply sign up online.

I-10 West at Sunland

Crews are planning to close I-10 West at Sunland Park (Exit 13) for 27 hours on a Sunday later this month. We haven’t nailed down a firm date yet, but it’s looking like June 17 (Father’s Day) or June 24.  Pay attention because this closure will result in changes to traffic lane patterns along I-10 West between Resler Drive and North Mesa Street.  We’ll provide you with an illustration of these coming changes next week.

Resler Exit

GO 10 engineers are talking about closing the Resler Drive westbound exit ramp; but, details are still developing. We don’t know when it will close (maybe the end of June) and we don’t know how long it will stay closed (it could be weeks).  The closure is necessary so crews can build the NEW Resler exit ramp. Despite the lack of details, we hope you appreciate this frigid closure forecast.

North Mesa Street

Brace yourselves. Sometime in the next couple of months, we will be closing half the lanes of North Mesa Street in both directions between Osborne Drive and Remcon Circle. This is the juggling act we’ve been telling you about since April; but, in case you haven’t heard, GO 10 needs to upgrade the pavement on North Mesa Street and connect new ramps and lanes. For motorists, it will mean varying lane closures, shifting traffic lane patterns, and changing detours (aka traffic juggling) for the rest of 2018.  See attached flyer.

Traffic therapy

Remember, we are in the home stretch for this project. In fact, we are aiming to be mostly out of your way by the end of this year. (GO 10’s official end date is April 2019.) But baby steps – here what’s scheduled for next week:

TxDoT/Go10 Closures, Detours for Week of April 22nd

Drivers that use the Sunland Park Interchange and I-10 in the area will experience a traffic switch, lane reductions and multiple weekend closures in May as construction advances on TxDOT’s GO 10 project.

Traffic Switch/27-Hour Closure

Crews will close Sunland Park Drive from Mesa Hills Drive to Doniphan Drive in both directions – along with all ramps at Sunland Park – from Sunday, April 29 at 3 a.m. to Monday, April 30 at 6.

The closure is needed to prepare for a traffic shift. During the 27-hour closure, motorists will be allowed access to businesses along Sunland Park Drive. Police officers and road signs will be in place to help drivers navigate the closure. Through traffic should avoid the Sunland Park corridor.

The traffic shift starts April 30 when crews close the Sunland Park overpass and shift traffic onto the newly constructed turnaround bridge parallel to the overpass for travel. The shift onto the turnaround bridge will mean fewer through lanes:  two northbound lanes and one southbound lane.

To assist drivers during this shift, the new Sunland Park flyover will be open. They can also use the westbound on ramp to I-10.

The closure and traffic shift will last at least five months. During that time crews will demolish and replace the Sunland Park Drive overpass. The new overpass will have an increased clearance height and additional lanes.

Extended Closures

57-Hour Weekend #1

I-10 will close in both directions between the Sunland Park exit and entrance ramps, the Sunland Park overpasses will close, and the Sunland Park flyover ramp will close from 9 p.m. Friday, May 4-Monday, May 7 at 6 a.m. Crews will be demolishing the Sunland Park Drive overpass. Drivers will be detoured onto the I-10 eastbound and westbound frontage road ramps.

57-Hour Weekend #2

The following weekend, I-10 will close so crews can continue the demolition and begin to remove massive steel girders from the old Sunland Park flyover ramp. I-10 at Sunland Park will close; Sunland Park Drive will close from Mesa Hills to Paisano, the Sunland Park flyover ramp will close, and the I-10 westbound on ramp at Sunland Park Drive will close.

Drivers traveling on I-10 eastbound will use the on/off ramp as a detour. Westbound traffic will exit at Sunland Park and use North Mesa Street (SH 20) as a detour. Closures will be in place Friday, May 11 from 9 p.m.-Monday, May 14 at 6 a.m.

57-Hour Weekend #3

A third 57-hour weekend closure may be needed if work does not progress as planned. Progress could be impeded by factors such as wind.  If a third 57-hour closure is needed, it will be Friday, May 18 from 9 p.m. – Monday, May 21 at 6 a.m.

Lane Reduction

A new traffic configuration will be in place on I-10, in both directions, through summer starting May 7. Lanes will be reduced to two lanes between Sunland Park and Buena Vista. Crews will be replacing the pavement and guard rail in the median of I-10.

The major takeaways for this week are:

TxDoT/GO10 Closures, Detours for Week of April 1st

Work at Sunland Park continues. The flyover to I-10 East is still closed and work to demolish the old ramp and prepare for the new ramp’s opening on April 30th is on track.

As mentioned last week, once the new ramp opens crews will then shut down the Sunland Park overpass, between the two traffic lights, at the Sunland/I-10 intersection. The overpass will be demolished and replaced.

Next up: North Mesa. Work here will ramp up in the next few weeks, with major improvements planned, including replacing pavement in the area and constructing Texas turnaround lanes.

Once work is complete, the overpass will have been completely replaced, and will feature a full bridge span across North Mesa Street free of support columns in the median.

Detour:  Motorist will exit at North Mesa Street (Exit 11) and follow the detour signs to re-enter I-10 Eastbound using the Sunland Park Drive entrance ramp.

Crews will implement a change that places I-10 Eastbound traffic onto the paralleling eastbound collector-distributor (CD) lanes.  By 6 am on Monday, April 16, motorists will be traveling on the CD lanes for approximately a half mile between the North Mesa Street overpass and Resler Drive. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph in this half-mile section.  The traffic switch will be in place for several months while crews work on the main lanes of I-10 Eastbound.

TxDoT/Go10 Closures, Detours for Week of March 25

While the Sunland Park flyover ramp is currently closed, once the flyover ramp is opened (target date to open is April 30th), crews will next change how motorists get across the Sunland Park Drive overpass.

The overpass reconfiguration will switch traffic onto the eastern-most turnaround bridge, which we refer to as bridge 17.  As the illustration above shows, the traffic switch means a reduction of through-lanes to three: 1 southbound lane as shown by the pink line, and 2 northbound lanes as shown by the green and blue lines. This condition will be in place for at least five months.

Remember, the Sunland Park flyover ramp will be open before this traffic switch is implemented. Also keep in mind, GO 10 is aiming to be substantially complete with structures at the I-10/Sunland Park interchange by the end of this year.

Go10 officials simply say, “We want to be mostly out of your way by January 2019.”

If you’re wondering why this traffic switch is necessary:  GO 10’s design plans call for the demolition and reconstruction of the existing Sunland Park Drive overpass. Crews aren’t merely replacing the pavement of the overpass, they need to bring down the beams and rip out the columns.

The newly replaced overpass will have an increased clearance height and the support columns will be relocated to make way for the collector-distributor (CD) lanes, which will run alongside I-10’s main lanes. Click here to see a simulation video of the completed GO 10 corridor.

If you’re wondering why traffic can’t be place on both turnaround bridges (bridge 17 and bridge 16):  Traffic cannot be placed on the other turnaround bridge safely.

If you have other questions, contact GO 10 at info@go10elpaso.com or 1-844-373-Go10 (4610).

Crews have ‘ramped-up’ their activity in the Sunland area recently. This week crews opened up the westbound Sunland Park Drive exit ramp.

The right-turn lane from Sunland Park Drive to get on I-10 West was also restored.

Next week the focus will be on the major closure of the Sunland Park flyover ramp to I-10 East. This closure is necessary so crews can demolish and re-build the pavement that physically connects the ramp to Sunland Park Drive.

Once complete, the all-new Sunland Park flyover will open to traffic.

Motorists can keep updated on GO10 project with GO10 alerts.

TxDoT/Go10 Project Closures, Detours for Week of March 5th

GO 10 is targeting the week of March 19 to close the Sunland Park Drive flyover entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound. Once closed, the flyover ramp will stay closed for several months, possibly into early summer.

Pinpointing an exact closing date and opening date can be difficult in the field of highway construction because the work can be affected by many unpredictable factors, such as weather.

Closure of the Sunland flyover ramp is necessary so crews can demolish and re-build the pavement that physically connects the ramp to Sunland Park Drive. Once complete, the plan is to open the all-new Sunland flyover to traffic.

The I-10/Sunland Park interchange is the most complex section of GO 10’s six-mile work zone because it involves the demolition and re-construction of two bridges over I-10, as well as the construction of two brand new overpasses.

Keep in mind, GO 10’s broader goal is to be substantially complete with structures at I-10 and Sunland Park by December this year. To achieve that December goal, drivers can expect 2018 to bring:

  • more disruptive closures to the I-10/Sunland Park interchange
  • more significant detour routes
  • traffic slowdowns that can affect adjacent roads, such as South Mesa Hills Drive and Doniphan Drive.
I-10 East @ North Mesa

9 pm each night to 6 am each following morning

·      I-10 Eastbound will close completely between North Mesa Street (Exit 11) and Sunland Park Drive.

·      The North Mesa Street entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound will close.

·      The Resler Drive flyover entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound will close.

·      The Sunland Park flyover entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound will close.

Detour:  Eastbound traffic will exit at North Mesa Street (Exit 11) and take Doniphan Drive to Sunland Park Drive. Traffic may re-enter I-10 Eastbound from the Sunland Park Drive entrance ramp.

Sunland Park Drive

24/7

Possibly March 19 through early summer

March 19 is a target date. A definite start date will be announced soon.

·      The Sunland Park Drive flyover entrance ramp to I-10 Eastbound will be inaccessible.

Closure of the Sunland flyover ramp is anticipated to be a high impact condition. During this closure, drivers are encouraged to consider taking alternate routes when they can or avoid the I-10/Sunland Park interchange during peak rush hours.

For drivers who must travel through the interchange, they may like to consider carpooling to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road; plus, they may like to give themselves more time to arrive at their destinations on time.

Employers may like to offer employees the ability to work remotely or encourage meetings be conducted via teleconference rather than in-person when possible.
