Red-Hot Rhinos Roll Into Thorne Cup Hockey Championships Wednesday

After rampaging through the regular season and playoffs, the Rhinos now turn their attention to hosting and dominating the Thorne Cup this week.

In their first round-robin game, the Rhinos will take on the Long Beach Bombers at 7 pm on Wednesday, April 11. On April 12 at 7 pm, they’ll face off against familiar foe, the Oklahoma City Blazers, before ending round-robin with a match up against the Utah Outliers on Friday at 7 pm.

After round-robin, the four teams with the highest point totals will advance to the semi-finals on April 14. These games will be played at 2 pm and 7 pm.

The two winners will advance to the finals on April 15 at 4:30 pm. For more information on the tournament structure, click here.

The Rhinos will start the Thorne Cup with the organization’s 10th Annual Teddy Bear Toss in memory of Joni Arnett. Remember to toss your teddies onto the ice after the Rhinos’ first goal of the game!

Also starting on Wednesday, the Rhinos will auction off their orange game-worn jerseys. The bidding will end at the 10 minute mark of the third period on Saturday.

Undefeated Rhinos to Open Home Hockey Season at Coliseum Friday

The El Paso Rhinos are off to a sizzling start this season and are ready to extend their six-game win streak with their home opener this weekend.

Undefeated El Paso will take on the San Diego Sabers in a Western States Hockey League three-game home series at the El Paso County Coliseum Events Center located at 4100 East Paisano.

The Rhinos opened the new season with six straight victories, sweeping the Dallas Snipers and the Ontario Avalanche. In just six games, the Rhinos have scored a combined 37 goals.

The WSHL, an Amateur Athletic Union-sanctioned Tier II Junior A ice hockey league, features 23 teams split into four divisions: Western, Northwest, Mountain and Mid-Western.

El Paso plays in the Mid-Western Division, along with the Springfield Express, Oklahoma City Blazers, Dallas Snipers and Wichita Jr. Thunder.

The games are set for 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28, and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Tickets are $5 for general admission, $7 for Black Section, $10 for Grey Section, $15 for Orange Section, $25 for Glass Section, $30 for Balcony and free for military with ID.

El Paso Rhinos face Tulsa Jr. Oilers at Coliseum Events Center starting Friday

The El Paso Rhinos are looking to get back on track in their highly competitive division in the Western States Hockey League this weekend.

The Rhinos will take on the Tulsa Jr. Oilers in a WSHL Mid-Western Division three-game home series at the El Paso County Coliseum Events Center, 4100 E. Paisano. The games are set for 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday, Feb. 24-25, and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26.

El Paso, 32-11, is in third place in the Mid-Western Division, after losing three straight to league-leader Oklahoma City. The Rhinos have 16831175_1491135750898014_3086366995439763059_nbeen guided by forwards Chaseton Sare, with 37 goals and 87 points, and Alex Johanson with 37 goals and 76 points.

Tulsa, 13-32 and in fifth place, looks to forward Bogden Shleev and his 25 goals and 47 points.

Saturday’s game will feature the popular Jersey Off Our Backs promotion, where fans can buy raffle tickets for a chance to win a game-worn jersey. The Rhinos’ featured top will be a throwback El Paso Buzzards jersey, the city’s first professional hockey team.

Then, on Sunday, the unique Paint the Ice promotion will take place, where fans can join players in the rink after the game to draw on the ice. The cost is only $5.

League-leading El Paso Rhinos Return for Special Home Series

The league-leading El Paso Rhinos are back home this weekend for a special three-game Military Appreciation Series with a seven-game win streak firmly intact.

El Paso, boasting a stellar 21-2-1 record, will be put to the test as they face the 17-2-2 Valencia Flyers in a Western States Hockey League three-game home series at the El Paso County Coliseum Events Center at 4100 E. Paisano.

The games are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 9-10, and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11.

The weekend series will feature free admission for military personnel with ID and their families, as well as a special military jersey auction on Saturday.

Chaseton Sare is paving the way for the Rhinos with 23 goals and 37 assists, while Alex Johanson has scored 27 goals. The two are among the WSHL’s scoring leaders. Jordan Hank leads the Flyers with 16 goals.

The Rhinos sit atop the Mid-Western Division, while the Flyers are in second place in the Western Division. El Paso is coming off an impressive three-game road sweep of the Phoenix Knights, winning the series by a margin of 31 goals to 4.
