One life lost to homelessness is too many. In 2016, at least 20 people lost their lives while living in homelessness, and 7 of them stayed at one point at the Opportunity Center for the Homeless.
On Wednesday, December 21st the first day of the Winter Season and the longest night of the year — we will honor the lives of those homeless individuals who died in our community in a special vigil and remembrance ceremony at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, located behind our main emergency shelter on Magoffin Avenue.
“The loss of lives remind us our commitment to help and protect those in need, regardless of their condition; and strengthens our resolution to work for a community in which no life is lived or lost in homelessness”, said Ray Tullius, Executive Director for the Opportunity Center for the Homeless.
The Opportunity Center for the Homeless in collaboration with the San Vicente Family Health Center and the Emmanuel United Methodist Church — among other organizations, will commemorate and pay a tribute to those individuals who lived their last days in the streets of El Paso community.
In the 3rd Annual Ceremony these individuals will be remembered by name, moments of silence, and other activities.
