ELECTION NIGHT RESULTS: YISD Bond Approved; 6 of 8 City Charter amendments passed

With an county-wide election turnout of less than 7%, voters approved six of eight City Charter amendments, elected new mayors for two communities and decided to spend $430million on school district improvements.

According to El Paso County Election numbers, of the 394,083 registered voters in the county, only 25,406 voters headed to the polls – resulting in a 6.45% turnout.

Those who bothered to vote made YISD officials very happy, approving the $430m bond issue for the district. Officials will now be able to undertake needed repairs, rebuilds and upgrades to the district’s infrastructure. Earlier this year, residents voted down a similar-sized bond, prompting YISD officials to undertake a detailed outreach program to convince district voters to vote ‘yes’ this time around.

In the City Charter Amendment vote, six of the eight proposed charter amendments passed, leaving Propositions 2 (Other Employment by Council Members)  and Proposition 6 (Actions Requiring Ordinances) to fail. The margin for Proposition six’s failure was only five votes.

In the county, both Horizon City and Clint elected new mayors; voting Ruben Mendoza and Charles Gonzalez in as city leaders, respectively.  Aldermen positions in the Village of Vinton, as well as Horizon and Clint were voted in as well.

On the Texas Constitutional election front, all seven amendments passed.
