Chihuahuas Split Monday Doubleheader with Cubs

The El Paso Chihuahuas started Monday’s doubleheader with a three-run first inning but lost to the Iowa Cubs 6-5.

It was the third time in six games the Chihuahuas scored three runs or more in the first inning.

Allen Craig went 2-for-3 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Auston Bousfield hit two doubles in the loss for El Paso. Game 1 was the fifth time in the last six games the final score was decided by one run.

Monday’s 9:33 a.m. first pitch was the earliest in Chihuahuas’ history.

For the second game, the Chihuahuas got their fifth shutout win of the season in Game 2, defeating Iowa 3-0, holding the Cubs to two hits in the process. Javy Guerra hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for the Chihuahuas, his second homer of the series and seventh of the season.

Robert Stock got his team-leading fifth save of the season and fourth of the road trip.

The Chihuahuas ended their seven-game Midwest road trip with four wins and three losses. Monday’s Game 2 victory clinched El Paso’s first series win since May 21-24 at Tacoma.

Monday was El Paso’s first doubleheader of the season. The Chihuahuas do not play on Tuesday.

Chihuahuas Clip Cubs in 12th Innings 6-3; Dickerson’s Streak now at 24 Games

The El Paso Chihuahuas scored three runs in the top of the 12th inning to beat the Iowa Cubs 6-3 Thursday afternoon in El Paso’s longest game of the season. The Chihuahuas won three of four in Des Moines, taking a series from the I-Cubs for the first time in team history. The Chihuahuas are now 3-0 in extra inning games this year.

Manuel Margot hit the second pitch of the game over the left field wall, his third homer of the season, to give the Chihuahuas a 1-0 lead. It was the first time a Chihuahuas player led off a game with a home run since Abraham Almonte in Sacramento on May 1, 2015.

Alex Dickerson celebrated his 26th birthday by hitting a solo home run on the first pitch of the top of the fourth, making the score 2-0 El Paso and extending his hitting streak to 24 games, the longest in Minor League Baseball this season.

Later in the game, with the score tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, Jabari Blash hit a two-out double off the left field wall to put El Paso in front 3-2. Iowa plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score again.

The game remained tied until the top of the 12th when Hunter Renfroe brought in a run on a fielder’s choice and Ryan Schimpf hit a two-run double after five consecutive foul balls.

The Chihuahuas sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the 12th on only one hit, taking advantage of three walks and a hit by pitch.

Cubs Comeback Crushes Chihuahuas 8-3; Dickerson’s Hit Streak Extends to 22 Games

The Iowa Cubs scored five late runs in their 8-3 win over the El Paso Chihuahuas Tuesday night at Principal Park. El Paso’s Alex Dickerson went 2-for-4 to extend his team-record hitting streak to 22 games.

Dickerson’s streak is one game shy of tying High-A Salem’s Andrew Benintendi for the longest minor league hitting streak of the season. Benintendi had a 23-game hitting streak in the Carolina League from mid-April to early May, according to MiLB.com.

Iowa starter Rob Zastryzny pitched seven innings and allowed only two runs in his Triple-A debut. The score was tied 2-2 when Iowa’s Wilson Contreras hit a tiebreaking home run in the sixth inning, his second longball in as many games.

Iowa then rallied for four runs with two outs in the seventh inning against El Paso reliever Tayron Guerrero to pull ahead.

James Loney’s RBI single brought home Alex Dickerson in the ninth inning to make the score 8-3 and plate the first run of the season against Spencer Patton, who had 15 shutout outings entering Tuesday’s appearance.
