Video – TNTM: Stephen King’s Dark Tower movie review

People have been waiting for Stephen King’s Dark Tower book series to be made into a movie for many years.

It was teased several times over the years. They had a few comic book series expanding the Dark Tower universe, but never a movie. Patience and determination won out and fans finally got their movie.

All was happiness and jubilation until they announced Idris Elba would be playing the main character, Roland Deschain. It is heavily implied in the books that Roland is white. The purists came out in force against this casting choice. I, myself was on the fence on the issue.

After watching the movie, I believe Idris Elba was a very good choice to be the gunslinger. You have to take into account this movie is not the story from the book put onto film. The Dark Tower is a stand-alone movie. The main characters in the movie are Roland Deschain (the gunslinger), Jake Chambers, and Walter (The Man in Black).

This is a good spot to tell you about Matthew McConaughey’s portrayal of the Man in Black. The critics are saying he overacted the part. I don’t believe that to be true. I felt he gave an ominous feeling to the part without using any gimmicky voice or persona. When Walter was on screen you knew he was the bad guy.

The critics on a certain site, named after spoiled vegetables, gave Dark Tower a rating in the high teens. As of this article the audience score has it at 64% and rising. Jack and I both thoroughly enjoyed Dark Tower. But you don’t have to take our words for it… we asked other audience members that watched the movie with us. There responses were ALL positive. We couldn’t find anyone in our screening that didn’t like it.

If you are looking for a good movie to watch this weekend we highly suggest getting a ticket for Dark Tower at Alamo Drafthouse in El Paso. Also go give RayWork Productions a like on Facebook for making us look better than we actually are.

Do you like Stephen King movies? Do you like the Dark Tower movie adaption? Do you want to see more Dark Tower movies or maybe even a TV series? Let us know in the comments.

Dark Tower casts Idris Elba as Gunslinger

Idris Elba cast as the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, in Stephen King’s Dark Tower movie

Jack and Troy discuss the casting of Idris Elba as the main character, Roland Deschain or the Gunslinger, in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower movie.

Gunslinger Roland Deschain roams an Old West-like landscape in search of a dark tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world. Roland is the last living member of a knightly order known as gunslingers and the last of the line of “Arthur Eld”. This is his world’s analogue of King Arthur.

Politically organized along the lines of a feudal society, it shares technological and social characteristics with the American Old West but is also magical. Many of the magical aspects have vanished from Mid-World, but traces remain as do relics from a technologically advanced society.

Roland’s quest is to find the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to be the nexus of all universes. Roland’s world is said to have “moved on” and it appears to be coming apart at the seams.

Popular Stephen King character, Randall Flagg is the primary antagonist in King’s epic series, The Dark Tower. Flagg tries to keep Roland Deschain from reaching the Tower (the linchpin of existence) so he can claim it for himself and become a god. The Dark Tower expanded on Flagg’s background and motivation, linking his previous appearances.

Mighty nations have been torn apart by war, entire cities and regions vanish without a trace, and time does not flow in an orderly fashion. Sometimes, even the sun rises in the north and sets in the east.

As the series opens, Roland’s motives, goals and age are unclear, though later installments shed light on these mysteries.
