UTEP Basketball Adds Canadian Guard Osborne

UTEP Basketball Coach Tim Floyd announced on Thursday that Isiah Osborne has signed a financial aid agreement and will join the Miner basketball team.  Osborne is enrolled in school and eligible to practice with the Miners.

UTEP Athletics officials are in the process of determining if a waiver could be filed that would grant him immediate eligibility during the 2016-17 season.  If not, he would be eligible to play in 2017-18 provided he serves a year in residence.  He would have three years of eligibility with the Miners.

“There are currently 164 Canadians playing Division I basketball, including Matt Willms on our team,” Floyd said.  “Matt watched Isiah play over the summer and was really impressed so he recommended him to the coaching staff.  We like what we’ve seen from Isiah on film and think he can be a really good player for us.”

The 6-5, 190-pound Osborne hails from Windsor, Ontario, Canada and was the second-leading scorer on Windsor College’s 2015-16 squad, averaging 15.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals.  He was named the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Rookie of the Year and helped the Lancers post a 23-12 overall record and 14-6 mark in conference play.

Windsor College reached the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) Final Four for the fourth straight year and finished first in the OUA West Division.  Osborne was also appointed the OUA Rookie of the Year.

Additionally, Osborne was a member of the Toronto 3D Global Sports Team that toured China in May and played games versus All-Star teams representing the 1st League of Lithuania, NBA D-League/NCAA of the United States, and the China National B Team.

In August, Osborne scored a game-high 35 points with seven rebounds and five steals in a preseason exhibition versus Division I Charleston Southern at the NCAA/OUA Tip-Off Classic in Windsor, Ontario.

Osborne previously played at Kennedy Collegiate secondary school in Windsor, where he was a WECSAA (Windsor and Essex County Secondary Schools Athletic Association) First Team City All-Star.  He also played at Forster High School where he led the school to its second OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) basketball title in four years.

The Miners will open the season with the Orange & White Scrimmage on Oct. 22.  The exhibition opener is on Oct. 30 versus Southeastern Oklahoma State, and the regular season opener is on Nov. 12 against Louisiana College.

UTEP season tickets are on sale now by calling (915) 747-6150.
