Montwood Graduate Named Finalist in National Dr. Pepper Contest

Jordan Alarcon, a Class of 2017 Montwood High School graduate, is a finalist in this year’s national Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway scholarship contest.

Alarcon will be in Indianapolis November 30 through December 1 to compete for $100,000 in tuition at the Big 10 College Football Championship Game. The former Ram will compete against three other students in a preliminary throw November 30.

The two finalists who throw the most footballs into the giant Dr. Pepper hole in 30 seconds will compete again during halftime at the game on December 1. The winner will receive $100,000 in tuition.

“Being named a finalist is such an honor,” Alarcon said. “I never thought that I would stand out among so many amazing candidates, and I feel blessed and excited to have been given the opportunity to compete for this scholarship!”

“With this scholarship I would be able to graduate debt free, something I never thought would be possible for me,” she said.

To enter the contest, Alarcon created a video that describes how winning the Dr. Pepper contest will help her reach her academic and professional goals. Her video also focused on her mission to empower women.

The 20-year-old El Paso native is pursuing a communication degree at the University of Texas at El Paso and is a college worker for the Socorro ISD Public Relations Department.

She recently completed an internship with Congressman Beto O’Rourke and is a member of the Women in Business Association.

“As I pursue a degree in Public Relations, a field heavily dependent on public image, I will not tone down my identity as a young Hispanic woman,” she said. “I want women to know that in any field, success is not a trade-off for your femininity.”

This year, Dr. Pepper will award 20 students a scholarship. Five students will win a $100,000 prize, another five will win a $25,000 prize, and ten will win a $2,500 prize.
