Video+Story – TNTM: DC Comics Legion of Doom Returns

If you watched Challenge of the Superfriends cartoon growing up, you know their biggest enemy was the Legion of Doom. The Legion of Doom was the villains answer to the group of Superheroes at the Hall of Justice.

The Legion even had a cool headquarters (Hall of Doom) that was shaped like Dart Vader’s helmet. I spent many Saturday mornings in front of the TV watching the Superfriends thwart the Legions attempts at villianry.

The good folks at DC Comics are gonna give us the Legion of Doom once again. Even better, they are putting Scott Snyder in charge of writing the story and Jim Cheung will be giving us the artwork. The first arc of the Justice League relaunch for DC Rebirth will feature the Legion of Doom as the main antagonists.

The Legion will consist of Lex Luthor, the Joker, Sinestro, Cheetah, Black Manta, and Gorilla Grodd. That line-up should give you chills.

Scott Snyder has said the Joker will play a very important role in the story and not be just comedic relief. Looking back at Snyder’s previous work on Batman and the Dark Nights Metal series, I am giddy with anticipation. I can’t wait to see Justice League back in prominence again. The writing of Snyder along with this new Legion of Doom promises some very epic stories.

Who is your favorite villain team in the comics? Do you think Snyder will return Justice League to the top of the sales charts? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Video – TNTM: DC Comics Justice League Movie Review

Jack and I watched the Justice League movie at Alamo Drafthouse in El Paso. We both LOVED! the movie. All the characters got their time in the spotlight. The actors really brought those characters to life. You really connected with each and every one of them.

The villain was very formidable. There were times when he appeared to be unstoppable.

The best part of the movie for me was when they brought Superman back from the dead. They actually gave him some good dialogue this time. He was more than a one dimensional boy scout type character. I am super glad they let him display a full range of emotions, including humor.

The main complaint from the critics is the CGI. Honestly, it wasn’t the best CGI work, but it in no way distracted from the story. The pacing and character development was on point. You are too involved in the story arc to think about CGI for more than a few seconds.

Like I said, we both thoroughly enjoyed the movie. You don’t have to take our word for it though. We asked some of our fellow movie-goers what they thought of the movie and they overwhelmingly agreed with us. If you want to see a good DC Comics superhero movie that is as good as, if not better than Wonder Woman, then go see Justice League. We recommend seeing it at the Alamo Drafthouse with a bowl of bottomless popcorn!

TNTM: Justice League versus The Power Rangers

DC Comics and Boom Studios crossover

If you are in any comic book store for longer than a few minutes you will undoubtedly hear the “who would win in a fight between…” arguments. These conversations have been the staple of comic book conversations for as long as I can remember.

If the two parties were from the same publisher you could always cite historical references from earlier years with that publisher. The problem arises when the two parties in the theoretical fight are from different publishers. Since the publishers are competing for a bigger market share, they don’t like to share their characters with other publishers. If you saw crossover events it was usually between different titles under the same publisher…. until recently.

There seem to be a lot of crossover titles between publishers lately. Batman had the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles appear in Gotham. After that the favor was repaid and Batman had a crossover with the Turtles under the IDW imprint. Now the Justice League is crossing over with The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It seems like DC Comics has learned to play nice and share their characters with the other publishers… and us readers are reaping the benefits.

“Something very, very massive has happened in Angel Grove, in the Power Rangers’ world, and then another massive event sends one of our main characters, Zack, into the Justice League’s world”, said writer, Tom Taylor.

“I can’t tell you too much more, but there’s a bit of conflict, there’s struggle, there’s misunderstanding. Those are classic tropes that you want to see when hero teams that don’t know the other ones are heroes come together. A little bit of miscommunication leads to badness. But eventually, good too! And really it’s just a great opportunity to take these two heroes from two different worlds and bring them together in a way I don’t think anyone could see coming”, Taylor added.

When asked about the villains in the series Taylor responded “Well, we’re definitely going to see Lord Zedd. I can happily tell you that. Lord Zedd will appear in this book. And he is one of the biggest problems. The other big problem is a DC villain who we can’t actually announce yet, but make sure you get issue #2.”

Both publishers, DC Comics and Boom Studios are very excited about this epic crossover. Each company is placing their marquee characters into the other’s universe. We finally get to see what would happen when these two pop culture Goliaths band together to do what they do best, beat bad guys.

“DC and BOOM! Studios teaming up on this crossover is a dream come true for fans of Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the Justice League,” said Hank Kanalz, Senior Vice President, Editorial Strategy and Administration, DC Entertainment. “Stories like this are a great way to have that ‘what if’ itch scratched, combining favorite characters from different publishers in epic adventures.”

“Everyone at BOOM! is thrilled to be part of an event of this magnitude,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “We have iconic characters meeting for the first time that are beloved the world over! Our imaginations have been racing since the moment this kicked off with our friends at DC and Saban Brands. Get ready…this is one event that’s not to be missed.”

Press Release

Two of comics greatest teams team up for the very first time! Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove! TNTM: Top 10 comics list for December 2016

It’s a tie! The Top 10 comics for December are an even 50/50 split between Marvel and DC. None of the smaller publishers were able to crack the top 10 this month.

DC Comics again relied heavily on Batman related titles. All 5 of their top 10 comics have Batman in them. Batman #12 & 13, Dark Knight Master Race Book 7, All-Star Batman #5, and Justice League vs. Suicide Squad #1. Not sure if this is a statement about the popularity of Batman or if DC is just having trouble elevating another character to Bruce Wayne’s level.

2 of Marvel’s top 10 titles are in the Star Wars Universe. Star Wars #26 kicks off the Yoda story. We get to learn a little about the diminutive Jedi’s early exploits. Doctor Aphra #1 gives one of the newer Star Wars characters her own book. She is like Indiana Jones of outer space. She is accompanied by 2 re-purposed Imperial droids, 0-0-0 specializing in torture) and BT-1 (assassin droid). You’ll also see more of Black Krrsantan, a Wookie bounty hunter.

There are also 2 Marvel titles dealing with big fights in Inhumans vs X-men #1 and Civil War II #8. The last Marvel title in the top 10 is Hulk #1 which sees She-Hulk take over the mantle of “Hulk” as she wrestles with her growing inner rage.

Let us know what titles you are reading and why you believe they should be in the top 10. Just leave a note in the comments section.

TNTM: Justice League / Power Rangers team up

Justice League and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers together

The Justice League seems to be fighting, crossing over, or teaming up with everyone else lately.  You don’t even have to be a DC Comics title.  This January BOOM! Studios and DC Comics will join forces when “Justice League / Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” arrives in comic stores.

The six issue series will be written by Tom Taylor with art by Stephen Byrne.

The story finds the Black Ranger flung into a reality not his own. The rest of the Power Rangers team must discover a way to find their friend and rescue him from Batman.

Official Press Release

On January 11, two of comics’ greatest teams will combine their powers and abilities for the first time! The Justice League—Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern John Stewart, the Flash and Cyborg—meet Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in a six-issue monthly miniseries from New York Times best-selling writer Tom Taylor (INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US, GREEN LANTERN CORPS: EDGE OF OBLIVION) and artist Stephen Byrne (JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA REBIRTH: THE RAY).

Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove when the Power Rangers’ Command Center is breached and the teleporters are damaged! Zack the Black Ranger is flung into an alternate universe full of citizens possessing outrageous powers and wearing strange costumes. Will Jason the Red Ranger, Trini the Yellow Ranger, Kimberly the Pink Ranger, Billy the Blue Ranger and Tommy the Green Ranger be able to get to Zack in time to save him from Batman?

“Everyone at BOOM! is thrilled to be part of an event of this magnitude,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “We have iconic characters meeting for the first time that are beloved the world over! Our imaginations have been racing since the moment this kicked off with our friends at DC and Saban Brands. Get ready…this is one event that’s not to be missed.”

In addition to the standard covers drawn by Karl Kerschl (GOTHAM ACADEMY: SECOND SEMESTER), each issue will feature a variant cover drawn by one of comics’ most popular artists, pairing each member of the League with a different Power Ranger:

  • Batman/Pink Ranger by Dan Hipp
  • Cyborg/Blue Ranger by Dustin Nguyen
  • The Flash/Black Ranger by Yasmine Putri
  • Green Lantern John Stewart/Yellow Ranger by Marguerite Sauvage
  • Superman/Green Ranger by Chris Sprouse
  • Wonder Woman/Red Ranger by Marcus To

“With their talented roster of writers and artists, DC and BOOM! Studios bring to life the world’s greatest superheroes, including the iconic Power Rangers,“ said Janet Hsu, CEO at Saban Brands. “With DC, BOOM! Studios and Saban Brands partnering, we will bring fans a legendary crossover that will stand the test of time, just as these historical superheroes have done individually for decades.”

TNTM: Justice League vs. Suicide Squad

The World’s Greatest Heroes Face Off Against Belle Reve’s Worst Villains

JLVSSSThe Justice League has long been a popular team for DC Comics. All the heavy hitters in DC’s lineup have been member at some point.

The DC Entertainment movies are building toward the team’s debut on the big screen with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Aquaman. This movie promises to be a big hit. Let’s hope they find a suitable villain that will require them to band together.

The success of Suicide Squad in the theaters tells me people love their villains. The Squad is a collection of some of the deadliest and most intriguing bad guys. They say there is no honor among thieves, but the members of the Squad displayed some good teamwork. There was more than once a member placed the team above themselves.

Problem is these 2 groups are opposed to the other. When the Justice League finds out about the existence of the Suicide Squad they make it their mission to end it. They believe the villains they have worked hard to catch should remain in prison.

The Justice League will do their best to end the Suicide Squad black ops program. One small thing, the Suicide Squad does not want to have their program shut down.

The 2 groups clash over this little disagreement. Oh, and DC has mentioned there is another team in play that has the goods on the whole DC Universe. How exciting!

Official Press Release

With a record-setting 12 million copies sold this summer, DC Entertainment has set the comic book world on fire since REBIRTH launched in June. With 21 of the initial 30 monthly and twice-monthly titles going to press multiple times, comic book fans are already asking, “What’s next?”

The answer arrives this December, as DC announces its first major event of Rebirth: the Justice League facing off against the Suicide Squad. This two-month event will pit DC’s two greatest super-teams against each other in a six-issue weekly miniseries, beginning with a special prelude in the pages of SUICIDE SQUAD #8, and with issues of SUICIDE SQUAD (#9 and #10) and JUSTICE LEAGUE (#12 and #13) serving as tie-ins during January.

The prelude issue sets the stage for issues #1 and #2 of JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. SUICIDE SQUAD, written by Joshua Williamson (THE FLASH, Vertigo’s FROSTBITE) with art by Jason Fabok (JUSTICE LEAGUE: DARKSEID WAR) and Tony S. Daniel (JUSTICE LEAGUE, DEATHSTROKE). Issues #3 through #6 debut weekly throughout January, along with the special tie-in issues of SUICIDE SQUAD written by Rob Williams and JUSTICE LEAGUE by guest writer Tim Seeley (NIGHTWING, GRAYSON).

The day that Amanda Waller has long dreaded has finally come to pass: the Justice League has discovered the existence of Task Force X! America’s paragons of truth and justice won’t take well to a government-sponsored team of black ops super-villains (with bombs implanted in their heads), but before the Justice League can shut down the Suicide Squad, a bigger problem looms: another deadly strike team is lurking in the shadows, one that could expose dark secrets throughout the DC Universe, with ties to the hidden truths of REBIRTH. Longtime enemies such as Batman and Deadshot, the Flash and Boomerang, and Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn will have to put aside their differences when an evil threat once thought lost to the DC Universe makes their return.

“This story is another building block to REBIRTH. With all of our heroes back on the board, it’s the super-villains turn. And the events within will set the stage for REBIRTH Phase 2 as a surprising team emerges and another piece of the puzzle of the future of the DC Universe, and the past, comes into focus,” said Geoff Johns, President and Chief Creative Officer, DC Entertainment.

“I’m really excited about writing this story,” said Williamson. “This is a great opportunity to remind fans that, outside of Batman, the DC Universe isn’t aware that Task Force X or Amanda Waller even exists. To ultimately bring these villains to light for the entire DC Universe to see should make future Suicide Squad stories that much more interesting. And by the end of the story, both teams may discover that they have more in common than they thought, whether they like it or not.”

The advanced solicitation

The first major event storyline of DC’s Rebirth era is here!

This issue, written by Joshua Williamson with art and cover by Jason Fabok, kicks off an explosive six-issue weekly event! It all begins with a day Amanda Waller always knew would come: the Justice League discovers the existence of the Suicide Squad! This government-sponsored black-ops team of super-villains with bombs implanted in their brains is obviously a deal-breaker for Earth’s paragons of truth and justice! But you can bet that the Wall and her Task Force X won’t go down without the fight to end all fights as this weekly series gets underway!

TNTM: Deathstroke to appear in DC Comics movie

Deathstroke on the big screen

Jack and Troy from ZiaComics.com get all nerdy about the hints dropped about Deathstroke.  The character is likely to appear in an upcoming DC Comics related big screen movie. The movie(s) he will likely appear in is the upcoming Batman movie or Justice League.

Deathstroke is a very deadly character with a somewhat tragic backstory. The Arrow TV series touched on the character a bit, but never fully fleshed out Deathstroke.

Origins

Slade Wilson was sixteen years old when he first enlisted in the United States Army, having lied about his age.  In the early 1960s, he met Captain Adeline Kane. Adeline was training young soldiers in new fighting techniques. Kane was amazed at how skilled Slade was in all fighting techniques.  Slade quickly he adapted to modern conventions of warfare.

Adeline immediately fell in love with him. She had never encountered a more able-bodied combatant. She offered to privately train Slade in guerrilla warfare. In less than a year Slade mastered every fighting form presented to him. Six months later he married Adeline and she became pregnant with their first child.

Slade was reassigned to Vietnam. In the war his unit massacred a village, an event which sickened him.  SAS member Wintergreen rescued Slade in Vietnam. The United States Army chose Slade for a secret experiment. The Army imbued him with enhanced physical powers in an attempt to create meta human super soldiers for the U.S. military.

Making of a Mercenary

Deathstroke became a mercenary soon after the experiment when he defied orders and rescued his friend Wintergreen.  A commanding officer with a grudge sent Wintergreen on a suicide mission. A criminal named the Jackal took his younger son Joseph Wilson hostage to force Slade to divulge the name of a client who had hired him as an assassin. Slade refused claiming it was against his personal honor code. He attacked and killed the kidnappers at the rendezvous.

One of the kidnappers slashed Joseph’s throat before Slade could prevent it. This destroyed Joseph’s vocal cords rendering him mute.

Adeline became enraged at his endangerment of their son. She tried to kill him by shooting him. She only managed to destroy his right eye. His confidence in his physical abilities was such that he made no secret of his impaired vision. He marked this with his mask which has a black, featureless half covering his lost eye. Without his mask, Slade wears an eye-patch.
