Bailey and Koech Punch Ticket to NCAA Championships

Sacramento – Sean Bailey and Lilian Koech punched their ticket to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA Championships (June 5-8) on Friday night.

Bailey earned an automatic bid, finishing second in the third heat of the men’s 400m quarterfinals. The junior crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 45.19, posting a fourth-place finish overall. His time also ranks fourth all-time in program history.

Koech is making her second trip to the NCAA Championships, as the senior made an appearance in 2017 in the 800m. The mid-distance runner clocked in a personal-best time of 2:03.73, automatically advancing with a third-place finish in the second heat. Her time rates third all-time in program history.

In his first trip to the NCAA West Preliminaries, Marek Taskar finished 22nd overall in the men’s javelin. The freshman registered a mark of 64.78m in his third and final attempt of the day.

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Kimisha Chambers and Dreshanae Rolle concluded their season. Chambers finished 17th with a time of 58.66, while Rolle took 23rd place.

Freshman Maribel Caicedo closed out her season, recording a personal-best time of 13.52 in the 100m hurdles.

On the men’s side, Shakeem Smith notched a 22nd-place finish with a time of 52.80 in the 400m hurdles.

The top-12 qualifiers of each event will move on to the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships scheduled for June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.

UTEP’s Koech Shines in Last Day of Texas Relays

AUSTIN – Senior Lilian Koech closed out the last day of the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in stellar fashion on Saturday afternoon.

“We had a few individuals register personal-best marks this weekend with Karol (Koncos) in the hammer throw and Carolyne Chepkosgei in the 1,500m,” said UTEP head coach Mika Laaksonen. “I’m also very pleased with Lilian’s (Koech) performance in the 800m and 1,500m. She was the second collegiate finisher in the 800m and took second in the 1,500m. Although Chantoba (Bright) didn’t have her best meet, she was very competitive in both the long and triple jump.”

The distance runner took the track in the women’s 1,500m with teammate Carolyne Chepkosgei. Koech notched a second-place finish with a season-best time of 4:21.84. Chepkosgei was the fourth collegiate runner to cross the finish line with a personal-best time of 4:25.78. Koech time currently rates fourth nationally, while Chepkosgei time ranks 14th nationally.

Also on the women’s side, Chantoba Bright represented the Miners in the women’s long jump. In the highly-competitive field, Bright took 11th place with a leap of 6.02m (19-9) and was the top freshman finisher.

The small group of Miners concluded the final day of competition at the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday afternoon in San Marcos, Texas.

Freshman Kaylah Shepherd finished fourth in the javelin throw a field that included 32 competitors. The thrower registered a personal-best mark of 42.66m, which currently rates fourth in Conference USA.

On the men’s side, Darius King took seventh place in the triple jump, while teammate Iason Machairas also finished in seventh in the shot put.

· Lilian Koech time of 2:05.42 in the 800m currently ranks third nationally. Her time (2:05.42) in the 1,500m rates fourth nationally.
· Carolyne Chepkosgei notched a personal-best time of 4:25.78 in the 1,500m.
· Chantoba Bright’s leap of 13.01m in the triple jump currently rates second in Conference USA.
· Kaylah Shepherd posted a personal best of 42.66m in the javelin throw.

Koech Named C-USA Athlete of the Week

Senior Lilian Koech was named the Conference USA Track Athlete of the Week the league announced on Tuesday.

The distance runner registered a personal-best time of 2:06.29 in the 800m at the Music City Challenge on Saturday.

The Eldoret, Kenya, native won the event and now rates fourth all time in the UTEP record book. Koech also earned a spot in the national rankings, checking in at 19th and second in C-USA in the 800m.

This is Koech’s first C-USA Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor this season.

The Miners head to Birmingham, Ala., to compete at the C-USA Indoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday.

Miners Garner C-USA Athlete of the Week

UTEP’s Lilian Koech and Michael Saruni were named Conference USA Track athletes of the week for their performances at the Desert Heat Classic, the league announced on Tuesday.

Saruni etched his name into track and field history when he clocked 1:43.25 and set the NCAA 800m record. Donavan Brazier (Texas A&M, 1:43.55) previously held the record for two years.

The Kenya native passed former teammate Emmanuel Korir (1:43.77) on the all-time best in program history.

This marks the sophomore’s second weekly award of the season. Saruni’s time ranks as the fastest in the world this year.

Koech notched her first C-USA weekly award of the season after running 2:07.06 in the 800m to take home gold. The junior notched her fifth top-five finish of the outdoor season and garnered her second sub-2:08 in the 800m this season. The Kenya native currently ranks second in the league in the 800m and second in the 1,500m.

The Miners will enjoy a week off from competition before heading to Houston, Texas, for the C-USA Outdoor Championships hosted by Rice on May 10-13.

Flyin’ Miners Garner C-USA Athlete of the Week Honors

UTEP track and field nabbed two Conference USA weekly honors with Male Track Athlete of the Week Michael Saruni and Female Athlete of the Week Lilian Koech, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Saruni placed first in the 800m at the Vanderbilt Commodore Invitational with a school record time of 1:45.62. The Kenya native is the first collegiate athlete to run under 1:46.0 since Dirk Heinze of Arkansas did it in 2001, putting Saruni fifth overall on the NCAA All-Time Best list.

The sophomore’s time set a facility record for the Commodore Invitational and a new school record previously held by former teammate Emmanuel Korir (1:46.50). His time ranks No. 1 in the nation

Koech finished first in the mile run with a 4:45.62 over the weekend. The senior ranks eighth nationally and first overall in C-USA. Her time ranks as the sixth fastest time in school history.

Both student-athletes receive their first weekly honor of the season.

The Miners will return to action on Friday Jan. 19 at the New Mexico Cherry and Silver in Albuquerque, N.M.

UTEP’s Koech Earns First 2017 C-USA Athlete of the Week

UTEP’s Lilian Koech captured the first Conference USA Athlete of the Week award of 2017 for her performance at the Lobo Invitational the league office announced Tuesday morning. 

Koech marked a 5K time of 17:32.2 on Saturday at the Lobo Invitational to become the first female and second overall athlete to cross the finish line. Her time improved drastically from last season, which saw her run a 19:07.6 in that race.

The performance followed a stellar 2016 slate in which the junior earned NCAA Division I Cross Country All-Region and All-C-USA first team honors. The weekly award is the fourth of her career.

The Miners will return to action on Friday, September 8, for the Lori Fitzgerald held at the Chamizal Memorial National Park. The men’s race starts at 5:30 p.m. M.T. followed by the women’s race at 6:15 p.m.

UTEP’s Kosgei and Koech Lead Miners at Lobo Invitational

Albuquerque, N.M. – Antony Kosgei and Lilian Koech led the Miners as they opened the 2017 cross country season at the Lobo Invitational.

“Overall we had a good team performance for the first meet of the season,” said head coach Paul Ereng. “Antony and Lilian both had great performances. We still have some improving to do as the season progresses.”

The Lobo Invitational is a mixed 5K race with both male and female athletes running at the same time. Koech was the first female athlete to cross the finish line with a time of 17:32.10. Sophomore teammate Linda Cheruiyot finished seventh overall with a time of 18:40.40, trailed by newcomer Andrea Lucero (21:14.10) and Ana Molinar (29:38.10).

On the men’s side, Antony Kosgei finished second overrall with a time of 15:31.90. Junior Jonah Koech clocked a time of 16:46.90 to a 14th-place finish, followed by sophomore Michael Saruni (16:57.30).

The Miners will return to action next week for their annual home meet at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational on Friday, September 8.

UTEP’s Lilian Koech Garners Second C-USA Weekly Honor

Lilian Koech was named this week’s C-USA Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week for her dominant performance last Friday at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.

Koech clinched first-place in the women’s gold race in a field of 222 runners. She ran a 5K time of 17:50.6 to seize the title. This was her third individual victory of the 2016 season.

The sophomore paved the way for the Miners who took third overall with a total of 178 points over 27 other teams.  Koech kept her composure throughout the entire race to stay with the leading pack, to then burst to the leading position and surpass her competitors in the final stretch.

The Kenyan native averaged a 5:33.0 mile time to push her efforts to claim the crown.

This is the standout athlete’s second C-USA weekly honor of the season, and her third of her cross country career at UTEP.

UTEP’s Lilian Koech Named C-USA Co-Athlete of the Week

IRVING, Texas– Lilian Koech was rewarded for her stellar performance last weekend by being named Conference USA Female Cross Country Co-Athlete of the Week.

Koech proved outstanding efforts at the Kachina Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. on Sept. 17 where she secured a first-place showing with a 5K time of 17:34.36. The sophomore kept her composure throughout the race as she paced the way for the Orange and Blue who had three runners clinch the top-three spots.

Koech’s stellar efforts propelled the Miners to a team title with a total of 24 points to edge out NM State (31 points).

The Kenya native earned her third individual victory of her career as she was the first to cross the line out of 34 runners, and her first victory of this year’s season. This is the sophomore’s second C-USA weekly award of her career and UTEP’s first female athlete of the week honor for the 2016 campaign.

UTEP cross country will continue the action in two weeks when they head to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational.
