UTEP’s Downs Honored as C-USA Golfer of the Week

UTEP’s Lily Downs was named the Conference USA Female Golfer of the Week on Wednesday, the first such honor for the junior from Kirklevington, Yarm, United Kingdom.

Downs picked up a pair of top-five finishes at the NM State Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. and the FAU Fall Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla. over the last week. She carded a two-over-par 218 (71-71-76) and tied for fourth place at NMSU.

She finished five strokes back of individual champion Kiselya Plewe of Weber State. Downs took second at the FAU Fall Invitational with a nine-under-par 135 (66-69). She landed two strokes behind champion Worapitcha Anndit of Seminole State.

Downs now has posted seven top-10 finishes in her career. She posted the first sub-70 rounds of her career at FAU.

UTEP finished second at the NM State Invitational and third at the FAU Fall Invitational and has now placed in the top-five at all four tournaments this fall.

UTEP Sweeps C-USA Golfer of the Week Honors

UTEP’s Frederik Dreier and Lily Downs were named the C-USA Men’s and Women’s Golfer of the Week, respectively, on Wednesday.

A senior from Birkeroed, Denmark, Dreier carded a 10-under-par 203 (68-69-66) to take second place at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces on Tuesday.  He finished one stroke behind the tournament champion, and the Miners finished second to champion Grand Canyon.

Dreier registered his second consecutive runner-up showing after also landing second at the Fighting Irish Classic Oct. 10-11. Overall, this marked his third top-10 finish in four tournaments this season. This is Dreier’s first C-USA Player of the Week award this year and third of his career.

Downs, a sophomore from Kirklevington, Yarm, UK, won her first individual title and led UTEP to the team championship at the Lady Redwolves Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. on Tuesday.

It was the Miners’ first tournament title since May of 2011.  Downs shot career-low 71’s in the first and second round on Monday and maintained her first-place standing on Tuesday despite battling heavy winds.  She concluded the tournament with a two-over-par 218 (71-71-76), four strokes better than the runner-up finisher.

It marked Downs’ second consecutive top-five finish, as she tied for fifth place at the NM State Aggie Invitational Oct. 4-5. This is the first C-USA Player of the Week award of her career.
