Cloud 9! Salgado scores first goal of season; Loco’s unbeaten streak continues

El Paso Locomotive FC tied the number four team in the Western Conference after being down one goal, and hometown footballer Omar Salgado provided the boot.

It was a physical contest that saw seven yellow cards and one penalty. With this draw, El Paso continue their unbeaten streak and extend it to six matches.

“I am so happy for Omar, he deserved it. His work-rate for the team is superb and I know this will build up his confidence and keep things going,” said Coach Mark Lowry. “I’m very proud of how the guys all played tonight. It was a fantastic performance and to have not lost in four road matches is brilliant.”

El Paso’s own Louis “Chapa” Herrera got his first start of the season alongside newcomer Drew Beckie, who recently signed from OKC Energy FC.

In the 41’ a game-changing penalty was awarded to Timbers 2 which saw Dairon Asprilla step up. Goalkeeper Logan Ketterer came up with a massive save to deny to the penalty, but Timbers 2 were able to scoop up the rebound and score.

Four minutes later Omar Salgado, who was the first player signed to Locomotive, netted his first goal of the season.

After receiving a pass at the top of the box, the left-footed attacker cut to the right to create space off the defender and let a shot rip with his right foot into the bottom corner of the net.

El Paso Locomotive FC Signs OKC Energy FC Defender Drew Beckie

Tuesday morning, officials with El Paso Locomotive FC announced the addition of defender Drew Beckie to their 2019 roster, pending league and federation approval.

“I honestly couldn’t be happier to be adding a player and person of the caliber of Drew Beckie to our squad. Character-wise he is the perfect addition, and he is another tough experienced competitor who knows what it takes to win. He will be a wonderful addition to our defensive unit and gives us fantastic depth,” said Coach Mark Lowry.

Beckie has been with Oklahoma City Energy since June 2018 and has made over 20 appearances for the club. He was drafted by MLS’s Columbus Crew in 2013 and prior to joining Energy FC, spent a season with Lowry at Jacksonville Armada.

He  played his collegiate career at the University of Denver where he made 69 appearances and notched 7 goals. Beckie spent 2014 and 2015 with Ottawa Fury (USL Championship) and made 34 appearances.

Gallery+Story: Fit to be Tied! Locomotive, NM United fight to 2-2 tie

El Paso Locomotive FC and New Mexico United kicked off the regional rivalry with a four-goal firefight. With a draw that ended in 2-2, Locomotive are on a four-game streak without a loss (two wins and two draws).

“We played brilliantly. The possession the chances we created; it was superb. Keep in perspective, the last four games we remain unbeaten. We had another great performance tonight against New Mexico who are a great team. We controlled that game and restricted them,” said head coach Mark Lowry.

El Paso put New Mexico under intense pressure in the first half and opened their scoring account first. Richie Ryan came up with an interception in the middle of the pitch and passed it off to Calvin Rezende.

Rezende fought off a defender, took a few touches towards goal and connected with Jerome Kiesewetter who fired it right between the keeper’s hands. New Mexico’s Sam Hamilton answered with one of his own 9 minutes later to close the half level at 1-1.

Kiesewetter wasn’t done yet, in the 65th minute he scored a booming header off a perfectly placed ball from Sebastian Contreras that found him in the box.

This makes back-to-back matches where Kiesewetter has scored two goals. A late goal tied things up for the visitors, leaving the teams to split the points.

They play at home this Wednesday in their first US Open Cup Match vs Forward Madison FC in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

Locomotive derails Western Conference leader Reno 1868 FC 1-0

Thanks to a penalty kick awarded late in the game, El Paso Locomotive secured their second win of the season over Reno 1868 FC.

In the 75th minute of the game, Forward Jerome Kiesewetter was taken down in the Reno box, setting up El Paso’s shot.

Teammate Sebastian Contreras calmly stepped up to the spot and stuck the shot into the back of the net – sending the crowd at Southwest University Park into a frenzy of blue, white and yellow flags and smoke.

“We created plenty of chances this match. I would have liked us to have been a bit more progressive and move the ball forward more. We made some adjustments tactically going into the second half and it showed. I am very pleased with how we performed and happy to have won at home,” said Head Coach Mark Lowry.

El Paso came out fast in the first half and attacked heavily on the right channel with Salgado leading the charge.

Salgado would finish the night with three shots and two key passes. The second half was no different for El Paso who came out searching for the goal to put them ahead.

Locomotive kept up the energy and tenacity to close the match on top of Reno 1-0. With the win, El Paso improved their record to 2-2-3.

El Paso Locomotive FC Draws with Austin Bold FC

El Paso Locomotive FC traveled to the capital and came away with one point after a 0-0 draw against Austin Bold FC.

Jerome Kiesewetter made his second career start with Locomotive. The German-born American came into the El Paso camp four weeks ago.

El Paso native Louis “Chapa” Herrera saw his second appearance in a Locomotive uniform when he stepped on the pitch in the 75th minute, relieving midfielder Sebastian Contreras.

This match represented the second game for El Paso Locomotive in the Copa Tejas, the supporter’s driven cup amongst the four USL Championship Clubs; Austin Bold, El Paso Locomotive FC, Rio Grande Valley FC, and San Antonio FC. El Paso has tied with both of the Texas teams they have faced thus far in their 2019 campaign.

“We had some great cances that we didn’t capitalize on in both halves and those two offsides goals were very close … Austin are a very good team and it was a very good point here for us on the road,” said Head Coach Mark Lowry.

El Paso has yet to concede a goal when they play away from home.
