Las Cruces – The UTEP women’s cross country team finished first with a total of 38 points at the Lori Fitzgerald Open on Saturday morning.
The Miners crossed the finish line first, second, third and fourth. Winny Koech once again led the group, taking first with a time of 17:16.58 in the 5K. This is the second consecutive meet that the junior has won.
Teammates Lilian Koech and Linda Cheruiyot followed with times of 17:33.62 and 17:35.52, respectively.
Carolyne Chepkosgei snagged fourth place with a time of 17:40.47. The fifth Miner to clock in was Destiny White.
On the men’s side, freshman Rodgers Korir took second with a personal best of 22:00.41 in the 7K. This was Korir’s first meet of his collegiate career.
Teammate Cornelius Kapel registered a third-place showing with a time of 22:12.69. Freshman Boaz Ronoh finished 15th in the field with a time of 23:37.22. Freshman Isaiah Page posted a readout of 24:10.06.
The young men’s team finished fourth overall.
The Miners will be back on the course on Sept. 28 at the highly-competitive Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
