Gallery+Story: Young El Pasoan on ESPN’s SportsCenter “My Wish”

Earlier this year, Eleven-year-old Lazaro “Ziggy” Monarrez was granted the wish of a lifetime and ESPN was there to capture the magical event.

Ziggy had the wish of managing the Los Angeles Dodgers for a day and visited the team at Dodger Stadium.

Ziggy lives with spinal muscular atrophy and restricted lung disease. A companion piece written by Anna Katherine Clemmons will appear on ESPN.com and in Spanish on ESPN Deportes.

The Walt Disney Company, together with its subsidiaries and affiliates, including ESPN, has supported Make-A-Wish for three decades.

Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. According to a 2011 U.S. study of wish impact, most health professionals surveyed believe a wish-come-true has positive impacts on the health of children.

Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illness, and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. Headquartered in Phoenix, Make-A-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories.

With the help of generous donors and more than 33,000 volunteers, Make-A-Wish grants a wish somewhere in the country every 34 minutes. It has granted more than 285,000 wishes since its inception in 1980; more than 15,300 in 2016 alone. Visit Make-A-Wish at www.wish.org to learn more.

El Paso’s Make-A-Wish and Dave & Buster’s Celebrate World Wish Day on Friday

The Make-A-Wish North Texas El Paso Regional Office will host World Wish Day at El Paso’s new Dave & Buster’s (6101 Gateway Blvd. West) beginning at 5:30 p.m. on April 29, 2016.

To celebrate World Wish Day, the Make-A-Wish El Paso Regional office will gather a group of seven children battling life-threatening medical conditions and their families to have their wishes revealed live at a red carpet-themed event hosted by Dave & Buster’s.

April 29th is World Wish Day, the anniversary of the wish that inspired the founding of Make-A-Wish in 1980 with a 7-year-old boy named Chris Greicius who battled leukemia.  His one dream was to be a policeman, so he was sworn in as an honorary officer, making his wish come true.

From his one wish, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has grown to be the largest wish-granting organization in the world, granting over 240,000 wishes to date.
