Disney Plus Star Wars The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 5 review with spoilers

Episode 5 starts out with a dogfight in space. An unnamed bounty hunter is bearing down on Mando. The Mando is able to pull a stop-short maneuver and get the drop on the guy. In doing so he takes some damage to the Razorcrest.

Mando limps his ship to the nearest spaceport. We nearly jumped out of our seat when he got clearance to land by … Mos Eisley tower!

He needs money to repair his ship so he looks for bounties in the local cantina. Yes, it is the same cantina that Luke and Obi-Wan met up with Han and Chewie. He finds a rookie bounty hunter that needs help bringing in a big bounty.

Turns out the bounty is an elite assassin level target by the name Fennec Shand (portrayed by Ming-Na Wen). Mando agrees only when he is offered the full bounty as long as the rookie gets the credit.

They end up capturing Fennec, but she gets inside the rookies head while Mando is out capturing a dewback for transportation. She lets the rookie know Mando is worth far more to the bounty hunters guild than her.

The rookie shoots Fennec and goes back to Mos Eisley to hold Little Yodes hostage. Things don’t work out the way he planned, and Mando quickly dispatches him. He pays for his ship repairs and leaves Mos Eisley.

The scene that has everyone talking is a mysterious figure discovers Fennec Shands body in the Dune Sea desert. All we see are the boots and a cape. The theorists are saying it is Boba Fett. Personally I don’t buy into that. There are only 3 episodes left and we haven’t seen Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) yet. My money is it is him that was employing Fennec Shand and now he is upset his best protection has been taken out. What are your theories on this new figure?

Have you watched all the episodes yet? What did you think about the this fourth episode? Did we miss any Easter eggs? Let us know in the comments.

We have a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts. If they are good, we will use them on the show. The number is (575) 323-1332.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 4 (w/spoilers)

Episode 4 was a little slower than the previous 3 episodes, but it did fill in a lot about the Mandalorian. It was verified that he does in fact remove his helmet, but only when alone. That means no one has seen his face since he was a child taken in by the Mandos.

The Mandalorian finds a very backwater planet that doesn’t even have a spaceport to hide out. He runs into Cara Dune (Gina Carano), an ex Rebel shock trooper who is also hiding out on the planet.

They get into a bit of a tussle (Cara Dune appeared to be winning) before they join forces to help a small local group of farmers to defeat a raiding clan of Klatooinians. Those Klatooinians have some big firepower in the form of an up-armored AT-ST. They took a somewhat goofy looking vehicle that the Ewoks made short work of, and turned it into a really evil looking killing machine.

Long story short, the farmers win and The Mandalorian is thinking about staying in the village with Baby Yoda. That is, until a bounty hunter tries to sniper Baby Yoda (He deserves his own name, so let’s call him Little Yodes). The Mando then realizes he has to stay on the run and take Little Yodes with him to keep him safe.

If you watch the credits you’ll notice Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of Ron Howard aka Opie aka Richie Cunningham) directed this episode. She did a pretty decent job of capturing the human emotions side of the Mandalorian.

Have you watched all the episodes yet? What did you think about the this fourth episode? Did we miss any Easter eggs? Let us know in the comments.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 3 (w/spoilers)

Episode 3 of the Mandalorian had such a Nerdtastic moment that it almost brought tears to our eyes. The Mando delivered the asset and collected his payment of a buttload of Beskar steel.

BTW, pay attention to that scene, the camtono is a throwback reference to Willrow Hood running through Bespin carrying that same type of safe.

The Mando takes the Beskar to their hideaway. Some of the Mandos don’t like the fact he worked with some remnants of the Empire since they are the ones responsible for them having to hide. There is a little scuffle, but they decide they are on the same side and make peace. The blacksmith/armorer agrees to make the Mando a new breastplate to replace the one that was thrashed by the mudhorn. He wears his new Beskar armor to get his new bounty target. All the other bounty hunters are jealous of his big payday.

long story short, he has second thoughts about turning over the baby Yoda. He goes all John Wick on the stormtroopers guarding the location. He grabs baby Yoda and heads back to his ship.
Unfortunately that sets off all the bounty hunters tracking fobs and they head him off in the street. He does a pretty good job of holding them off for a while. Just when it looks like he is penned down with no hope… The rest of the Mandos show up to rescue him. You see jetpack Mandos, heavy artillery Mandos, and every other conceivable type of Mando. They clear the way for him to get to his ship.

Greef Carga gets the drop on the Mando in his ship, but is quickly shot out of the back hatch. As the Mando is flying away one of the jetpack Mandos flies next to him like the Rocketeer, salutes him, and leaves.

This episode, while short, was packed with great storytelling and awesome action. When the jetpack Mandos made an appearance I had a Clone Wars flashback. The story should really start picking up on action now since EVERY bounty hunter in the universe should be coming after him. Maybe we will start to see some of the big name bounty hunters make appearances.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian – Episode 2 (with spoilers!)

Episode 2 of the Mandalorian picked right up from where the first episode ended. The bounty must be in high demand as a group of mercenaries try to get the target from the Mandalorian.

Not everyone wants the bounty alive. IG-11 had instructions to kill the target and the mercenaries from this episode were trying to take out the target as well.

In true Mandalorian fashion, he disperses all the attackers. After a quick patch job on himself and his armor, he proceeds to his ship, the Razorcrest. Once he rises over the last hill he notices a clan of Jawas stripping his ship of any sell-able parts.

A kerfuffle ensues as he tries to stop the Jawas and get his parts back. He quickly finds the Jawas Sandcrawler is like a tank and is unable to get inside. He returns to our Ugnaught friend from the first episode who helps him negotiate a barter with the Jawas for the return of his parts.

They come to an agreement that the Jawas will return the parts if the Mandalorian gets them a particular egg. The problem is the big hairy rhino-like creature doesn’t want to give it up.

Long story short, the Mandalorian gets the egg after being beat up pretty bad. We also learn the little Yoda baby has some pretty strong force powers. The Mando gets his parts back, rebuilds the ship with the Ugnaughts help, and leaves the planet… end scene.

This episode was a bit shorter than the first (39 minutes versus 30 minutes). I for one am okay with this. I would rather have a solid 30 minute episode than an hour long episode with useless filler that detracts from the story.

Have you watched both episodes yet? Did you like the second episode as much as the first. Did we miss any Easter eggs? Let us know in the comments.

VLog: TNTM review of The Mandalorian Episode 1

Disney Plus launched November 12th on the back of their exclusive Star Wars based show “The Mandalorian”. With about 10 million subscribers in the first day, I would say it was a good move.

This review is chock full of spoilers. If you haven’t watched the episode yet, do that first. Then come back here and fanboy out with us.

The first episode has lots of references to the other Star Wars properties. It also has some big name cameos. Pedro Pascal plays the title character. At least we think that is him. He never removes his helmet. There is even a little joke about it in the episode.

Carl Weathers portrays a bounty guild admin. He collects the targets from bounty hunters and pays them for their haul. Nick Nolte lent his voice to an Ugnaught that helps the Mandalorian out. Werner Herzog plays someone with a special high price bounty. Taika Waititi gives a great voice performance as IG-11, the bounty hunting droid. There are lots more big names in future episodes.

This first episode really captured the feel of the original trilogy while also developing a new seedy underworld to the Star Wars Universe. The movies have only shown us the big heroes and villains. The Mandalorian is introducing us to all the important players on the fringe of the overarching Star Wars story. We can’t wait for the second episode to be available for streaming so we can geek out some more.

Have you watched the first episode yet? Do you agree with us that it is the shot in the arm that Star Wars needs right now? Let us know in the comments.

TNTM: Disney Plus streaming service to debut The Mandalorian

Disney’s streaming service, named Disney Plus, is set to go live November 12, 2019.  The streaming service will be the online hub to watch all of Disney’s family-friendly and much of its mass-audience entertainment.

There will be content from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar, and National Geographic. Disney has already started to pull their existing content away from Netflix to make it only available through Disney Plus.

An added bonus is 30 seasons of The Simpsons thanks to the recent Fox takeover.

Not only will you get to watch all the already released movies and shows, but they are developing brand new series that will be exclusive to Disney Plus.  The series that is grabbing a lot of attention from Star Wars fans is “The Mandalorian“.

The series is set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi.  It will follow a lone Mandalorian beyond the reaches of the New Republic. It is written and executive produced by Jon Favreau.  Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, and Werner Herzog have all been cast to star in the series.

The first season will be eight episodes.

Mandalorian warriors are recognized by their iconic armor.  They are often characterized as a multi-species warrior people who often work as mercenaries and bounty hunters.

Mandalore is an independent planet  located in the Outer Rim in the sector and system of the same name.  The Mandalorian people are characterized as wary of and reluctant to aid the Empire.  Mandalore is an important planet due to it’s large deposits of beskar, a lightsaber resistant metal.

The term Mandalorian is not uttered once in the movies.  Mandalorians are used extensively in other Star Wars books and series.  They are so popular that a sanctioned costume club, The Mandalorian Mercs, was formed.

The Mandalorian Mercs Costuming Club set the standards of Mandalorian costuming based on canon movie references (Boba and Jango Fett) as well as canonical comic-book references, book references, television shows, and computer games.  I figure this is a good time to delve into the history of one of the most popular Mandalorians, Boba Fett.

Boba Fett is universally called a Mandalorian bounty hunter.  Interesting fact, he is not of Mandalorian lineage.  Boba’s father, Jango, was born to a family of farmers on the world of Concord Dawn located in the Mandalore sector.  His parents were killed by the Death Watch during a civil war.

Due to Jango’s displays of bravery, he was taken in and raised by the Mandalorians.   Jango would rise up the ranks and eventually became Mand’alor, leader of the Mandalorians.

Thanks to Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones we know Jango was selected as the source material for the cloners on Kamino to reproduce what would would become the first Stormtroopers.  Part of Jango’s payment for this was he received an unaltered clone to raise as his son.

That clone was Boba Fett.

Boba Fett’s first real appearance was September 24, 1978 in the San Anselmo Country Fair parade.  If you’re wondering why Star Wars characters were marching in a parade 20 miles north of San Francisco, well… 52 Park Way just happened to be the epicenter of Lucasfilm at the time.

When he marched in that parade he was still an unknown character to the general public.  An assistant film editor for the Star Wars films named Duwayne Dunham was picked to wear the Boba Fett outfit because he was the right size.

The first appearance of Boba Fett in moving pictures was in the animated section of Star Wars Holiday Special. The story-line is set after the events of the original film.  Chewbacca and Han Solo are trying to get back to the Wookiee home world of Kashyyk to celebrate “Life Day”.

The Empire is searching for members of the Rebel Alliance making it difficult for Han and Chewie to make it back.  Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C3-PO), Kenny Baker (R2-D2), and James Earl Jones (Darth Vader) all reprised their roles for this special.

It also starred Bea Arthur, Art Carney, Harvey Korman, and the band Jefferson Starship.  (Little trivia for ya Bea Arthur’s character, Ackmena, is one of the first LGBTQ Star Wars characters recognized as canon).

The Holiday Special is widely recognized for it’s extremely negative reception.  It has never been rebroadcast or officially released on home video.  The animated short featuring the appearance of Boba Fett is the only part of this video that is not atrocious.  Boba Fett went on to appear in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983).

Even though he only had a handful of lines in those movies, he achieved cult status.

Hopefully this little bit of backstory will help you appreciate The Mandalorian more when it debuts in a few months.  It’s hard to tell a story about Mandalorians without at least mentioning Jango and Boba.

They are the two names that pop into your mind when someone mentions Mandalorians or Star Wars bounty hunters.  They are by no means the only prominent Mandalrians.  If you read any of the Expanded Universe books or watch the Star Wars cartoons, most notably Clone Wars and Rebels, you will discover so many more interesting Mandalorians.

Disney Plus will be adding to that list with their new series.  Cross your fingers that we see a Boba Fett cameo or reference!

Video+Info: TNTM – Star Wars Universe Update

There has been a flurry of activity surrounding the Star Wars Universe ever since Disney purchased them.

They have been putting out about one movie per year since they have taken the helm. The Clone Wars, Rebels, and Resistance have been really solid animated series for Star Wars. They are working on a few original series for the Disney streaming service. There will be a Star Wars Land at Disney Land.

There has been a small hiccup in the domination of all media by Star Wars. It has been announced that Boba Fett and all the other filler movies that were scheduled to air between the major Star Wars releases are put on hold indefinitely.

Other than that, things are looking pretty good for Star Wars in the near future. We can’t wait to see the newest movie and we are already booking our trip to visit Star Wars Land when it opens in Fall 2019.

Are you a Star Wars fan? What are you looking forward to from the Star Wars Universe? Let us know in the comments below.

Video: TNTM – Star Wars The Mandalorian by Jon Favreau

Disney is starting their own streaming service. They will be pulling all their old titles under the streaming service eventually when broadcast contracts expire.

Disney will also be developing original content for their streaming service. One of those shows will be “The Mandalorian” directed by Jon Favreau. Disney is throwing a lot of money at this project and Favreau is a proven director, so we have high hopes for this series.

For those not steeped in all things Star Wars, Mandalorians are what Jango & Boba Fett are. They are a legendary race of warriors originating from the planet Mandalore and it’s moon, Concordia.

Jon Favreau’s Mandalorian will be Lucasfilm’s first live-action Star Wars television show. It is set during the years between the fall of the Empire and the rise of the First Order. The Mandalorian should be a good gap filler between the major Star Wars movie releases.

The only negative is it will only be available on the Disney Play streaming service. That will require the purchase of another streaming service membership.

Are you looking forward to the Mandalorian? Let us know in the comments.
