Video + Story – TNTM: Marvel Comics Fresh Start Initiative

Marvel Comics is back at it again. The Fresh Start Initiative will have them relaunching with a series of new #1 titles. If this sounds familiar to you, that is because they have done it several times in the recent past.

Marvel has relaunched its lineup five times since 2012: NOW!, All-New NOW!, All-New, All-Different, NOW! 2.0, and Legacy. We can only hope they realize they are doing more long term harm, than they are reaping on short term profits.

There have been hints of Fantastic Four returning to the printed page ever since film rights for that franchise returned to Marvel. We have seen Valeria Richards in Legacy talking about being homesick. We’ve also seen the Thing and Johnny Storm make reappearances. It seems like a no-brainer that we will see Reed Richards get the band back together.

We can expect to see a lot of Marvel characters return to their classic form. Steve Rogers will be Captain America, Tony Stark will likely be back in the Iron Man suit, Bruce Banner is back as Hulk, Logan is back as Wolverine, and Thor Odinson should be getting Mjolnir back since Jane Foster is being teased as dying.

If Marvel is smart they will find a way to utilize what is working right now instead of trashing it all. Riri Williams as Ironheart is a great idea, but not at the cost of getting rid of Tony Stark. Jane Foster as Thor breathed a new life into the Asgard stories. Having Miles Morales around in the main Marvel Universe added lots of plot potentials.

Hopefully Marvel will wake up and realize the long term damage they are doing to their comic book titles by rebooting them every time readers start to get accustomed to them. The Marvel movies are doing great, but that is because they have a long and rich history of great story-telling and character development to draw from. That well only runs so deep. Marvel needs to start making modern classics that future movies can be based upon.

What do you think about all the Marvel comic book reboots? Does it affect the way you approach their titles or big events? Let us know in the comments.

Video+Story: TNTM – Marvel Comics’ New Villain Named Red Goblin

Two of Marvel’s most dangerous Spider-man villains are Norman Osborn and the Carnage symbiote. Now try to imagine if both of those were merged. Ka-Blooey! mind blown!

Norman has been searching for more power ever since Peter Parker found a way to negate the Goblin formula in his body. Norman figured out he has a penchant for using magic/sorcery. He tried to convince the Temple with No Name to instruct him in the ways of sorcery. Despite his immense potential, the keepers of the temple deemed him to be too villainous and evicted him. He even went so far as attempting to break into the Sanctum Sanctorum…unsuccessfully.

Norman learned the Carnage symbiote was being held in the Lock Box, an underwater containment facility for dangerous extranormal artifacts located at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. He had his henchmen retrieve it and it appears he has bonded with the symbiote. The big question is which crazed personality is the dominant one.

So far, most of the goblin copy-cats have been lackluster. This one looks promising since it is the original Goblin coupled with an equally insane symbiote granting him unimaginable power.

Do you like the idea of the Red Goblin being a bonding between Norman and Carnage? What do you think it will take to stop this villain?

Video+Story – Marvel Comics Marriage of Colossus and Kitty Pryde

The Colossus and Kitty Pryde relationship has been off-again/on-again ever since Kitty first showed up at Xavier’s School for the Gifted. Marvel has finally allowed them to tie the knot.

In X-men Gold #20, Kitty proposes to Colossus. We haven’t seen his answer in print yet, but it seems Marvel is planning for a big blockbuster wedding. Unless they throw some kind of demented twist at us, we will be seeing Colossus and Kitty at the altar later in 2018.

Long time X-men writer, Chris Claremont, returns for an all-new story in X-Men Wedding Special #1. This will be a companion one-shot to the Kitty Pryde and Colossus wedding taking place in X-Men Gold #30.

The side story will feature Kitty Pryde. It is being billed as “the wedding of the century.” Writers Kelly Thompson and Marc Guggenheim will also provide stories for the momentous occasion. The artists will be Greg Land, Marika Cresta, and others not yet announced.

Do you like seeing your favorite characters getting hitched? Do you think marriages add to the story or detract from it? Let us know in the comments.

Video – Marvel Comics Black Panther Movie Review

Black Panther is one of those characters that most people know about, but they don’t know his back story. This movie gave you enough of his origin story along with a really great story-line to keep you interested.

T’Challa becomes King of Wakanda after the death of his father. He is thrust into the position of deciding whether to share Wakanda’s wealth and technological advances with the world to help all of humanity or to protect Wakanda citizens by continuing to let the rest of the world believe they are a poor agricultural country. Oh yea, there is also a malicious individual trying to usurp his throne at the same time.

What really set this movie apart from the rest of the Marvel movies is all the strong female leads. The women in Black Panther really steal the show. The comedy was toned down a bit in this movie as well. There were some funny spots, but not as much as in other Marvel movies. It seems like they may be gearing more to a serious tone to prepare us for Infinity War. There really isn’t much room for comedy in Infinity War.

Jack and I both really liked Black Panther. The acting was top notch, the CGI effects were realistic and didn’t detract from the scenes, and the story was very Shakespearean. There was a political undertone to the movie, but it didn’t beat you over the head with it. Black Panther is Marvels graduation from sophomore to junior. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for their upcoming movies.

Video+Story – TNTM: Marvel Comics to give Domino her own comic book

Marvel has decided to give Domino (Neena Thurman) her own comic book. Domino has been a member of Six Pack, X-Force, and X-Corporation. She was created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist/co-writer Rob Liefeld.

Domino’s first full cover story appearance was in X-Force #8 (March 1992) as a past member of the Wild Pack, later renamed Six Pack.

Domino is actually the result of a top-secret government program to develop the perfect weapon. She was the only test subject to survive. Her “luck” power was deemed a failure at meeting the project’s goals.

In addition to her exceptional marksmanship and hand-to-hand skills, Domino possesses “luck” power. This power is actually a mutant ability to subconsciously and psionically initiate random telekinetic acts that affect probability in her favor by making improbable (but not impossible) things occur within her line of sight. This ability can be viewed as either unbelievable good luck for her or catastrophically bad luck for her opponent.

Her “luck” power is triggered when she is in a stressful situation. This effect constantly emanates from her body at all times and is completely subconscious. In order for the luck to take effect, Domino herself must engage in an action whose chance she can affect.

Domino is also a superb marksman with various firearms, highly skilled athlete, excellent swimmer, and adept in the use of explosives. She has extensive training in various armed combat techniques and the martial arts, with Olympic-gold level athletic and acrobatic ability. She also seems to be fluent in multiple languages.

Domino has been revealed to be a character in the Deadpool 2 movie. She has ties to both Deadpool and Cable (also revealed to be in the movie) through her membership in X-Force. It will be interesting to see her “luck” power play off Deadpool’s crazy antics.

Here’s to hoping the Domino comic book stays around for a long time.

Video+Story: TNTM – Marvel Studios Venom Movie starring Tom Hardy

Spider-man has many epic and iconic villains in his rogues gallery. Venom is undoubtedly one of the most popular.

Peter Parker got the black symbiote suit in Secret Wars #8. It took some time for him to figure out it was an alien lifeform. It had bonded with Peter’s mind and knew he wanted to be rid of the symbiote. This made it cling harder to Peter. It took some help from Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four and a sonic wave blasting gun to remove the symbiote.

The symbiote disguised itself as one of Peter’s normal red & blue suits and was able to bond to him again. This time Peter gets church bells to create enough sound to break the bond.

Feeling rejected, the symbiote searches for a new host and finds Eddie Brock. Eddie was about to commit suicide when the symbiote bonded with him. Bonding with Brock makes the symbiote turn more violent and aggressive. This is when the symbiote adopted the name of Venom. Eddie and the symbiote felt betrayed by Peter, so they set out to get revenge.

Venom has been an enemy and ally of Spider-man. Others have bonded with the symbiote: Deadpool, Superior Spider-man, and Flash Thompson to name a few. There have been other mutations of the symbiote too. Carnage is an offspring of the Venom symbiote. The Life Foundation extracted five seeds from the Venom symbiotes and created Scream, Riot, Phage, Agony, and Lasher. There have been many others, but these are the main ones.

Tom Hardy has been cast to play Venom in the movie adaption. He is a very good choice to play the unpredictable insanity that is Venom. We’re gonna see this one on opening night.

TNTM: Marvel Comics X-men writer Chris Claremont Interview

If you name your three favorite X-men characters it’s a safe bet that Chris Claremont created two of them or at least had a big hand in shaping their story. Chris is known for his 1975–1991 stint as writer on Uncanny X-Men.

His tenure on that title is far longer than that of any other writer. He is credited with developing strong female characters as well as introducing complex literary themes into superhero narratives. He was able to turn the once underachieving comic into one of Marvel’s most popular series.

Claremont is credited with co-creating numerous X-Men characters such as Rogue, Psylocke, Shadowcat, Phoenix, The Brood, Lockheed, Mystique, Destiny, Selene, Lady Mastermind, Emma Frost, Tessa, Siryn, Jubilee, Rachel Summers, Madelyne Pryor, Moira MacTaggert, Shadow King, Cannonball, Warpath, Mirage, Wolfsbane, Karma, Cypher, Sabretooth, Empath, Sebastian Shaw, Donald Pierce, Avalanche, Pyro, Legion, Gateway, Strong Guy, Proteus, Mister Sinister, Captain Britain, Sunspot, Forge, and Gambit.

Some of Claremont’s classic X-men stories include “The Dark Phoenix Saga” and “Days of Future Past”. The 1991 series premiere of X-Men #1 that Claremont co-wrote with Jim Lee, remains the best-selling comic book of all time according to Guinness World Records. Claremont was entered into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 2015.

CHRIS CLAREMONT’S X-MEN, a new extended-version of the documentary, will be available on VOD February 6, 2018. We highly recommend you watch this informative and entertaining story of the life of Chris Claremont.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:

Chris Claremont came to Marvel as a young man, and was assigned a book that no one else wanted, a book on the brink of cancellation: X-Men. Over the next 17 years, his work on the title turned it into the biggest franchise in comic book history. Forty years later, his work has been adapted into ten films, three TV series, countless video games and has become a part of our cultural mythology. But, it all started with one writer and his commitment to emotionally honest storytelling and real character building.

This extended version of the documentary provides an expanded story with more background on Claremont and his two original collaborators, Ann Nocenti and Louise Simonson, revealing secrets into what made them a great team. Viewers will also gain insight into Claremont’s childhood and see what helped make the connection between him and the series outsider heroes. There is also a look at the franchises’ films and TV shows, including Claremont’s key role in launching X-Men and his thoughts on seeing his creations come to life, from the first X-Men film to the recent “Legions” TV series and the upcoming NEW MUTANTS film.

With over 40 minutes of new footage, the VOD also contains never-seen-before interviews with Rob Liefled (Deadpool creator), Marc Silvestri (artist) and hard-core fans who share the impact both Claremont and the comics have made on them.

The feature documentary is directed, produced, and edited by Patrick Meaney. Jordan Rennert produces and is the Director of Photography. CHRIS CLAREMONT’S X-MEN is distributed by XLrator Media.

TNTM: Marvel Comics Runaways on Hulu

Every teenager thinks their parents are evil. These teenagers find out it is true! Runaways is a superhero comic book series created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona and published by Marvel Comics.

It is about a group of diverse teenagers who discover that their parents are part of an evil crime organization known as “The Pride”. They can barely stand each other, but unite against their parents.

Hulu ordered a season of Runaways with the premiere set for November 21, 2017. The main cast is:

Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder
Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru
Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean
Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes
Gregg Sulkin as Chase Stein
Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez
Angel Parker as Catherine Wilder
Ryan Sands as Geoffrey Wilder
Annie Wersching as Leslie Dean
Kip Pardue as Frank Dean
Ever Carradine as Janet Stein
James Marsters as Victor Stein
Brigid Brannagh as Stacey Yorkes
Kevin Weisman as Dale Yorkes
Brittany Ishibashi as Tina Minoru
James Yaegashi as Robert Minoru
Julian McMahon as Jonah

Originally, the comic book series featured a group of six kids whose parents met every year for a charity event. One year, the kids spy on their parents and witness them sacrifice a girl in an occult ceremony. They learn their parents are “the Pride”, a criminal group of mob bosses, time-travelers, dark wizards, mad scientists, alien invaders, and telepathic mutants.

The kids learn they have inherited their parents powers. They steal weapons and resources from their parents including futuristic gauntlets, a dinosaur (not a typo, they steal a dinosaur), and a mystical staff. They join forces and use these resources to defeat their parents.

They decide to atone for their parents wrongdoings by fighting the new threats that emerge trying to fill in the Pride’s void. The team is made up of Alex Wilder – a prodigy, Nico Minoru – a powerful witch, Karolina Dean – is an alien, Gertrude Yorkes – has a telepathic link to a dinosaur, Chase Stein – uses his father’s futuristic gloves, Molly Hayes – is a mutant with incredible strength. Later they are joined by cyborg Victor Mancha, shape-shifting Skrull Xavin, and plant-manipulator Klara Prast.

The early reviews from the Runaways on Hulu is overwhelmingly positive. It is currently sitting at over 80% for both critics and audience on Rotten Tomatoes. If the Hulu series is as good as the comic book, then the rating is well deserved.

Video+Story – TNTM: Marvel Comics Legacy event review

Marvel Comics Secret Empire story-line is over and we are now learning the aftermath of those events in the Marvel Universe. Marvel is taking this opportunity to restart a lot of their comics and hopefully make things right.

**Spoilers may follow**

A lot of stuff happened in Marvel Legacy to set the stage for a LOT of fall-out. An infected Celestial comes to Earth looking for the host, the new Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes) receives powers of the original Ghost Rider (Penance Stare), Starbrand dies, Loki tries to steal the Mind Gem from SHIELD, you see Wolverine has escaped his Adamantium encasing, and there is a mysterious extra figure in the Avengers founding members statue. Lots of stuff for them to explain.

Marvel has revealed some new titles spinning out from Legacy including teasing the death of the Jane Foster Thor and Sam Wilson returning to the role of the Falcon.

We are seriously hoping Marvel uses this opportunity to do some good story-telling coupled with great artwork. Marvel needs to unleash their writers and let them create the next generation of iconic story-lines.

TNTM: Origin story of Mjolnir

Whenever you think of Thor you also think of his trusty hammer. Did you know that hammer has a name and a very interesting back-story? If you answered no, then this video is for you.

You always see Thor with his trusty hammer. That hammer is named Mjolnir. The loose translation of Mjolnir is “that which smashes”. The origin story for Mjolnir has been tweaked a little over the decades.

In Norse mythology Loki entered a bet that the dwarven blacksmiths couldn’t make a weapon better than Odins spear and Freya’s fold-able boat. When it looked like Mjolnir was gonna be better, Loki interfered. He transformed himself into a fly. He continually bit the dwarf running the billows. The dwarf did not flinch or falter until Loki bit his eyelid hard enough to draw blood. The dwarf paused long enough to wipe the blood from his eyes. This is what caused Mjolnir to have a shorter handle, making it a one-handed hammer.

Marvel’s early origin for Mjolnir was a bit different. Odin ordered Eitri, Brok, and Buri to forge Mjolnir using the core of a star and an enchanted forge. The forging of the hammer is so intense it destroys the star and nearly Earth itself. They allude to this being the cause of the dinosaurs going extinct.

Recently Marvel changed the Mjolnir origin again. This time the story has a storm the size of a universe named the God Tempest heading toward Asgard. Odin fought the God Tempest for days before finally being able trap it inside a nugget of Uru.

Odin has the dwarven blacksmiths forge a hammer from this nugget of Uru. Odin is unable to wield the hammer as the God Tempest trapped inside fights him for control. The hammer flies around Asgard destroying everything in it’s path.

Odin gets the hammer under control long enough to put an enchantment on it to prevent others from picking it up and re-starting the destruction. The hammer lays dormant for many eons until the God Tempest trapped inside eventually dies, but the power remains.

Your Nerd Cred just leveled up +1.

TNTM: The Gifted on FOX TV based on Marvel Comics characters

It seems like every new TV show or movie is based on a comic book. They all want to capitalize on the popularity of the more recognizable and mainstream characters from the comics. The Gifted on Fox TV goes with a different approach.

**Warning, spoilers may follow**

The show starts out with the Strucker family. They seem like a typical American family. This is a world where the X-men and Brotherhood of Mutants are nowhere to be found. The government has a branch called Sentinel Services. The mission of this branch is to bring in mutants for registration. After they are registered they are detained, experimented on, or used for the good of the government.

Then you discover the father, Reed Strucker, is a district attorney working with the Sentinel Services. He knows how the mutants are treated but believes it is for the greater good. That is, until it is revealed his son and daughter are mutants. Reed knows what will happen to his kids if caught so he enlists the help of the very same Mutant Underground he has been hunting. He convinces them to take his children to safety. The first few episodes have covered their escape from the clutches of Sentinel Services.

None of the marquee Marvel characters are in this show. They may sprinkle some cameos in later, but for the most part it is all lesser known mutants. So far we have seen Shatter, Polaris, Blink, Sage, Pulse, Thunderbird, and Dreamer. Another character, Eclipse, was developed solely for the TV show.

I have really enjoyed The Gifted so far. I like to see the lower tier mutants get a little bit of the limelight. If the writers do a good job developing the characters and sharing their backstories, people will really connect with them and the show will be a hit. I”m hoping for many great seasons.

TNTM: Marvel Comics Galactus origin

Most comic book fans know who Galactus is, but do they know how he came to be? In this fun fact I explain the origin of the big guy in purple.

Galactus is the first and oldest entity in the universe. He was originally the explorer Galan of Taa. The universe is going through the final steps of the Big Crunch, collapsing in upon itself. At the center of this Big Crunch is the Cosmic Egg from which the universe will be reborn.

Galan and other survivors leave Taa on a spacecraft and are engulfed in the Big Crunch. They all die except for Galan. He is bonded with Sentience of the Universe. After the Cosmic Egg gives birth to the new universe he changes and gestates for billions of years in a craft made of the rubble of his ship.

A Watcher observed Galactus’ birth and recognizes his destructive nature. The Watchers have a strict code of non-interference and thus chose not to kill Galactus.

When Galactus emerges from his craft, he has a hunger that can only be sated by consuming planets. A superhero group called the Ultimates decide to end this threat. They force Galactus into his own incubator. Galactus re-emerges as a Lifebringer instead of a Devourer of Worlds.

As a result of becoming a Lifebringer, Galactus comes into conflict with fellow cosmics Lord Chaos and Master Order. They beliee his change throws off the cosmic balance. Lord Chaos and Master Order bring Galactus to trial before the Living Tribunal. Galactus successfully argues the balance of the new Multiverse is different and his old role is obsolete. The LIving Tribunal agrees and is destroyed by Master Order and Lord Chaos. They are still unable to force Galactus to revert back to a World Devourer.

Master Order decides to create a new cosmic order which it and Lord Chaos control. Their former servant, the In-Betweener, is forcibly merged with them into a new cosmic being called Logos. Logos forcibly transforms Galactus back into the Devourer of Worlds.

The process is reversed when Anti-Man sacrifices his life to restore Galactus as the Lifebringer.

TNTM: Marvel Comics Secret Empire review

Marvel’s Secret Empire story-line made Captain America a complete opposite of what we have known about him for decades. They made it so Captain America had been an agent of Hydra ever since his childhood. Understandably, a lot of people were very upset over this new Captain America identity. The narrative is set in place long before the Secret Empire series kicked off. Let me take you back to the beginning.

S.H.I.E.L.D. was experimenting with using fragments of Cosmic Cubes to reshape reality as the agency would deem necessary. This caused the pieces to merge together into a single being. This being named itself Kobik. It suffered from a damaged and splintered sense of consciousness. As a result it decided to adopt the form it felt it most resembled in its confusion, a child.

Kobik wanted to be loved. Kobik decided to go to one person who had held dear one of the Cosmic Cubes that now partially composed Kobik, the Red Skull. The Red Skull took advantage of the child’s affinity and naivety and taught her the ways of Hydra.

Red Skull used Kobik’s powers to rewrite history and make Steve Rogers a Hydra agent. We will call this character Hydra Cap to avoid confusion. Hydra Cap set out to turn the world into Hydra’s idea of a perfect place. In the process he searched for all the fragments of the Kobik Cosmic Cube so he could completely control reality.

Hydra Cap collects all but one cosmic cube fragment. A group of superheroes fighting against Hydra Cap have the last remaining fragment. They use a bit of subterfuge (Ant Man and Winter Soldier shrink down and are on the fragment) to get in touch with Kobik as the cube is completed.

Kobik returns Captain America to reality and strips the Cosmic Cube’s powers from Hydra Cap. There is a huge battle with Hydra Cap and Captain America. Of course, Captain America wins and Hydra Cap is placed in a high security prison.

Kobik returns things to normal, but it is not revealed whether characters who died during Secret Empire will be brought back. This would have been a great opportunity for Marvel to correct all the things they have done over the past few years and “reset” characters and story-lines with a plausible reason, much like DC Comics is doing with Rebirth.

If nothing else, Secret Empire gave us a villain that is the equal of Captain America in every way. One advantage Hydra Cap will have is not Captain America has some self doubt. He knows the people will never fully trust him again due to Hydra Cap rising to power. That little bit of inner reflection during a fight could cause a moment of hesitation which may be all that is needed. If Marvel has gone through all the trouble of creating Hydra Cap, I say they should use him to his full effect.

Hail Hydra!

TNTM: Marvel Comics Inhumans TV series on ABC

ABC and Marvel are teaming up again for another TV series based on a Marvel Comics title. The Inhumans will share continuity with the films and television series that are already in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Marvel has done very well translating their big name characters and titles into blockbusters. They have also had tremendous success bringing some of their lesser knowns into the limelight (Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, etc). We are hoping that trend continues with the Inhumans.

First Appearance of the Inhumans as a team was in Fantastic Four #45, 1965. They have been around the Marvel Universe on the periphery ever since then. They would bring them out once in a blue moon (no pun intended… see below reference their current base of operations). The Inhumans are not mutants in the same sense as a majority of the earth-bound superheroes and villains. Their beginnings are a little more involved.

Millions of years ago during the Kree-Skrull War, the Kree discovered sentient life on Earth. Upon further investigation they found the inhabitants of Earth had genetic potential invested in them by the Celestials. The Kree experimented on Earth’s primitive beings by splicing Eternals DNA into Cro-Magnons.

The Kree were investigating possible ways to work around their evolutionary stagnation. They were also seeking to create a powerful mutant race of soldiers to use against the Skrulls. They were successful in creating a strain of humans with extraordinary abilities. For unknown reasons the Kree abandoned their experiments.

These abandoned test subjects formed a society of their own and called themselves the Inhumans. They remained isolated from humans and developed advanced technology. The Inhumans city, Attilan, has frequently been relocated. It is currently located in the oxygen-bearing Blue Area of the Moon.

An Inhuman geneticist discovers Terrigen Mist. The Terrigen Mist is a natural mutagen derived as a vapor from Terrigen Crystals. The Mist has the ability to alter Inhuman biology. Sometimes the mutated subjects gain superhuman abilities.

In the past uncontrolled exposure to the Mists mutated the majority of the Inhuman population into hideously deformed monsters. After many centuries of eugenics and birth control, the Inhumans were able to mitigate the genetic damage caused by Terrigen Mists.

Inhumans will debut on IMAX screens on September 1, 2017. It is the first live action television series to debut in IMAX. It will play for two weeks in IMAX before the series premieres on ABC September 29. The first season will run for eight episodes.

There are many great Inhuman characters. If they do a good job developing those characters the show will be successful. If they rely too heavily on CGI and making Lockjaw a comedic character, they may be in trouble.

Tell us what you think about the upcoming Inhumans TV series. Who is your favorite Inhuman character? Do you think the series will be another home run for Marvel or will this be their first misstep?
