TNTM: Stan Lee Action Adventure film in the Works

Fox to Turn Stan Lee’s Life into ‘70s Action Adventure Film

Stan Lee is a household name to even the most casual comic book fan nowadays.  That wasn’t always the case.  Twentieth Century Fox obtained the rights to produce a 1970s style action adventure film based on Stan Lee’s life.  The exploits of the early comic book writers and artists is very colorful and I for one would love to hear more about that era of comics.

In the 1970s Lee moved to Hollywood in an attempt to get Marvel’s characters into movie theaters. His attempts were largely unsuccessful.  History has shown that Lee may have just been a few decades ahead of his time.

Lee began working for Timely Comics (which would later become Marvel Comics) in 1939. By the 1960s, Lee was ready to quit the industry. His wife convinced him to give comics one more try by making the kind of story he wanted rather than what his superiors recommended. The result was Fantastic Four #1, a breakthrough collaboration with Jack Kirby that birthed the Marvel Universe.

Lee went on to co-create other characters including Spider-Man, the X-Men, Hulk, and Doctor Strange with artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.

Stan Lee is the co-creator of many of Marvel Comics’ most prominent characters. Twentieth Century Fox has been responsible for bringing some of those characters to movie theaters, including the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. Lee has made many a cameo appearance in Marvel films.

He has also appeared as himself in some non-Marvel films and TV shows such as Mallrats and Entourage. His cameos have become so commonplace that audiences look forward to his often comical appearances.

The plan is to create an 1970s type adventure with Lee as the main character with an alter ego.  The film will have a tone mirroring that of movies like Kingsman: The Secret Service and Roger Moore’s James Bond films.  Lee and Gil Champion, Lee’s partner at POW! Entertainment, will serve as executive producers.

TNTM: Marvel Monsters versus Super Heroes

Marvel Monsters Unleashed is Marvel Heroes vs. Classic Monsters

Marvel is pulling out all their big boy monsters in a new comic placing their popular super heroes against a collection of their most formidable “monster” characters.

“Our goal is to cram as many mammoth monsters of Marvel into Monsters Unleashed as will fit on the page,” said editor Mark Paniccia.

“If you’ve got a personal favorite, chances are very good you’ll see them causing some mayhem in this series. And if you’re worried we’ll forget one don’t be afraid to tweet at us @Marvel using the hashtag #MonstersUnleashed.”

Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso doubles down on the promise of an appearance from every giant monster from Marvel’s back-catalog.  “If there ever were a monster who stood 10 stories high or taller and created mayhem in the Marvel Universe over last several decades, they’re gonna be in the story,” added Alonso.

Monsters Unleashed

“Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, and Herb Trimpe – all of these guys created incredible monsters that we remember from my childhood,” Alonso says. “They’re the equivalent of those Ray Harryhausen-type monsters, those rubber suits that thrill us. To see them coming back, and to take them seriously, it’s a lot of fun.”

Marvel’s upcoming Monsters Unleashed is Marvel’s superheroes versus an all-star line-up of classic Marvel monsters.  This will be the first crossover event after Civil War II.  The title is set kick-off in January.  It will be a five issue bi-weekly event starting with a surprise attack on the Marvel Universe by a variety of monsters.  The list of Marvel monsters includes, but is not limited to Fin Fang Foom, recently heroic Groot, and Devil Dinosaur. It will be written by Cullen Bunn, with each issue drawn by a different artist ranging from Steve McNiven to Leinil Franics Yu, Adam Kubert, Salvador Larroca, and Greg Land.

“All of these artists are associated with huge scale superhero action, and we’ll be giving them room to breathe,” Alonso says. “There will be plenty of two-page spreads and splashes so the book feels as big as it is. Each issue is 30 pages long, which will allow for that. Why the monsters are here now and what they want, is gonna be part of the fun of the story. For people who say they want to see heroes fighting villains, well, here you go. This is the Marvel Universe being momentarily united to deal with this common threat, because if they don’t get united, there’s going to be no Marvel Universe to live in. So that’s an interesting dynamic right there.”

“It’s an all hands on deck situation. Imagine something like the Hulk only much bigger. With the destructive force those creatures have the heroes will have to mobilize much more quickly,” said Bunn. “The heroes find themselves very quickly in a situation where they have no downtime. They have no chance to take a breath. They’re moving constantly against what are essentially cataclysmic threats over and over again.”

All Marvel heroes will be involved including more street-level crime-fighters like Deadpool and Luke Cage. Darkhawk is also featured in the promo image after a prolonged absence in the Marvel Universe. The Marvel heroes have been divided by recent conflicts like Civil War II. This cataclysmic threat will force them to put aside their differences and unite. The advantage is readers unfamiliar with recent Marvel continuity can easily jump in with no prior knowledge of all the recent ins and outs.

TNTM: Earth’s Not So Mightiest Heroes

Great Lakes Avengers Brings Earth’s Not So Mightiest Heroes to Marvel NOW!

The Great Lakes Avengers have always been one of my most favorite Marvel teams.  They are a group of lower level super heroes that are doing their honest best at playing in the big leagues.  They were given guidance by Hawkeye and Mockingbird early in their formation.  They even had Deadpool on their team for a short time.  One of their members, Squirrel Girl, has single-handedly beaten most of the big villains in the Marvel Universe.

Origins of the team

Craig Hollis discovers that he is immortal and he decides to fight crime as Mr. Immortal. After being shot by a group of thieves and left for dead he realizes that operating alone may not be feasible. He places an advertisement for costumed adventurers in the local paper and assembles the Great Lakes Avengers.

He is successful in recruiting Dinah Soar, Big Bertha, Flatman and Doorman. Mr. Immortal refuses one candidate, Gene Lorrene, a leather fetishist calling himself Leather Boy. Gene was turned down because he has no superpowers and is therefore ineligible.  He takes the rejection personally.

The team is first seen in public by Avengers Hawkeye and Mockingbird.  They watch the group as they foil a robbery attempt. Although annoyed by the team’s naivete and their use of the Avengers name without permission, Hawkeye and Mockingbird agree to act as the team’s mentors. The Great Lakes Avengers assist the Avengers and West Coast Avengers from time to time.

They once help them fight Terminus.  After aiding the Thunderbolts against the villain Graviton, the GLA clash with the mercenary Deadpool.

After a period of inactivity the team learns that the West Coast Avengers have been disbanded and that Hawkeye has been killed.  The team subsequently battle Maelstrom, who is building a doomsday device. During this encounter Dinah Soar is killed. New members Squirrel Girl (who has a pet squirrel Monkey Joe) and Grasshopper are then recruited. Maelstrom is defeated via Mr. Immortal’s trickery.

Doorman, Grasshopper and Monkey Joe are all killed in the process (the last of these murdered by Gene Lorrene, who sought revenge against the GLA).

Mr. Immortal is also killed several times though he always recovers. Doorman is revived soon after his death and learns that he is connected to the Darkforce Dimension.  Mr. Immortal learns that as an immortal he is considered Homo sapiens supreme. Despite defeating Maelstrom and saving the universe, the Great Lakes Avengers’ victory goes unnoticed.

After receiving a subpoena from the Avengers and discovering that they are all mutants, the team decides to rename themselves the Great Lakes X-Men.

Squirrel Girl acquires a new partner, a female squirrel called Tippy-Toe. Grasshopper II dies after misjudging his armor’s jumping capabilities. Doorman becomes an “angel of death” charged with conveying the souls of the dead to the afterlife. Marvel Girl demands that they drop the “X-Men” name.  Flatman had just won a big poker championship and the team assumes the name Great Lakes Champions.

The teams history

With the beginning of the Civil War story line, the GLC decide to comply with the Superhuman Registration Act. The team is renamed as the Great Lakes Initiative, becoming officially sanctioned by the Fifty State Initiative as the team for the state of Wisconsin.

The team and Deadpool stop A.I.M. from using an “inebriation ray” that induces drunkenness in superheroes. Deadpool is granted reserve membership on the team.  He is later forcibly evicted from GLI headquarters after proving to be too much of an annoyance.

The team also appears during the Secret Invasion story-line confronting a Skrull disguised as Grasshopper. When Norman Osborn assumes control of the Initiative he transfers Gravity to a leadership role in the GLI, much to the superhero’s dismay.

After a fight with Fin Fang Foom, Squirrel Girl elects to leave the team and return to New York.  She feels that the other team members (who simply stayed in their headquarters playing cards during the fight) have come to rely upon her too much.  She believes her continued presence will prevent them from reaching their full potential as heroes and as a team.

During the Fear Itself story-line the team had reverted to the name Great Lakes Avengers.  They end up encountering Asbestos Man, who had been taking advantage of the fear and chaos that is happening. After standing around him for hours Mr. Immortal talks him into giving up in return for being remembered by the others.

TNTM: The New Mutants Movie Line-Up

The plan is to have the X-men spin-off title, The New Mutants, to hit the big screen in 2017.

The movie will focus on the angst-driven adventures of a diverse group of teens that include Native American Danielle Moonstar, Scots girl Wolfsbane, Brazilian ladies man Sunspot, a Kentuckian code-named Cannonball, and Russian teen Magik, and an alien named Warlock.

This friend-self is hoping the movie can do justice to Warlock.  He is one of my top ten favorite comic book characters.

The New Mutants of the comics were teen-aged students of Professor Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. The original team consisted of:

  • Cannonball (Samuel Guthrie) a mild-mannered Kentuckian who became near invulnerable when rocketing through the air.
  • Karma (Xi’an Coy Manh) a 19-year-old Vietnamese girl who could mentally possess other people’s bodies.
  • Mirage (Danielle Moonstar, originally codenamed Psyche) a Cheyenne who could create visual empathic three-dimensional illusions.
  • Sunspot (Roberto da Costa) a Brazilian who gained superhuman strength fueled by sunlight and could store solar energy in his body to use his super strength during the night.
  • Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair) a Scot who could transform into a wolf-like creature.

After the apparent death of Karma the new recruits included:

  • Cypher (Douglas Ramsey) could learn any language, spoken or written, at an exponential rate, whether it was human, alien, or machine, making him an unmatched computer expert.
  • Magik (Illyana Rasputin) sister of the Russian X-Man Colossus and long-time resident of the X-Mansion, an accomplished mystic who could open “teleportation discs” allowing travel to Limbo and from there, any point on Earth.
  • Magma (Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla) a fiercely tempered native of a secret Roman society in the Amazon who can control lava.
  • Warlock an extraterrestrial of the techno-organic race known as the Technarchy.

With the success of the X-men movies as of late, this New Mutants movie should fare well.  Having super powered teenagers dealing with their normal adolescent problems along with trying to save the world should make for a pretty good movie.

Talk Nerdy to Me: Marvel Comics Runaways on Hulu

Runaways, one of Marvel Comics lesser known titles is being developed as a television series

Runaways is a superhero comic book series published by Marvel Comics. The series features a group of teenagers who discover that their parents are part of an evil crime organization known as “The Pride”.  The series had been canceled in September 2004 at issue eighteen.  Due to high numbers of trade collection sales Marvel revived the series in February 2005.

Originally the series featured a group of six kids whose parents routinely met every year for a charity event. One year the kids spy on their parents and learn they are “the Pride”, a criminal group of mob bosses, time-travelers, dark wizards, mad scientists, alien invaders, and telepathic mutants.

The kids steal weapons and resources from their parents and learn they themselves inherited their parents’ powers.  Since the original groups introduction the Runaways have been portrayed as a somewhat dysfunctional yet loving family.

Originally the team featured six main Runaways.  This remained constant throughout the first volume (18 chapters) of Runaways.

The original six are:

  • Nico Minoru the daughter of dark wizards, is a witch capable of manipulating magic. She is the group’s leader.
  • Karolina Dean the daughter of alien invaders, is a solar-powered alien. She is in a relationship with Xavin.
  • Molly Hayes the daughter of telepathic mutants, is a mutant whose powers include super-strength and invulnerability.
  • Chase Stein the son of mad scientists, steals his father’s flame generating/manipulating gauntlets called “the Fistigons”.
  • Alex Wilder the son of mafia bosses, was a child prodigy at strategic thinking and planning.
  • Gertrude Yorkes the daughter of time-traveling criminals, used to have an empathic and telepathic link with Old Lace.
  • Old Lace a genetically engineered dinosaur from the 87th century, had a telepathic and empathic bond with Gert and Chase.

Later members include:

  • Victor Mancha the creation of the Avengers’ foe Ultron and Marianella Mancha, is a cyborg who can manipulate electricity and metal.
  • Xavin the child of Skrull warlords, can shape-shift and also manifest the powers of the Fantastic Four.
  • Klara Prast a Swiss immigrant to America from 1907 and child bride of an abusive older man, can control the growth of plants.

When Alex, Chase, Gert, Karolina, Molly, and Nico witness their parents (“The Pride”) sacrifice a girl in an occult ceremony they run off. As the story progresses the children learn of their heritage and abilities and steal resources from their parents. These resources include futuristic gauntlets, a dinosaur, and a mystical staff. Using these resources they manage to remove their parents from their criminal hold of Los Angeles.  They lose Alex in the final battle due to Alex’s true loyalty to his parents. With the Pride defeated the Runaways now vow to prevent other villains from filling in the void left by their parents. They eventually meet cyborg Victor Mancha and shape-shifting alien Skrull Xavin.  They invite them to join the team. Gertrude is fatally wounded right before the Runaways defeat a new incarnation of the Pride and Alex’s resurrected father.

The Runaways partially disbanded afterwards with Victor joining Hank Pym’s Avengers A.I. team. Nico and Chase were both captured by Arcade and forced to fight for their lives in Avengers Arena. Nico and Chase later joined other teen superheroes who survived Arcade’s games in Avengers Undercover. Chase makes allusions to returning to take care of Karolina, Molly, and Klara, and being angry that Nico did not do the same. By the end of Avengers Undercover the Runaways seem to be together once again.

The TV Deal

Marvel’s fan favorite teen team the Runaways are headed to TV in a deal that will bring them straight to series on the streaming service Hulu.  Runaways will be produced and written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the creators of CW’s Gossip Girl.

“We’ve known the Runaways‘ story would make great television,” said Jeph Loeb, EP and Head of Marvel Television, “and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie, who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience, write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”

Hulu is one of the biggest competitors to Netflix, which hosts several Marvel series. It’s unclear if Runaways will be connected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe the way that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have been.

No details on a production timeline or debut date were announced.

Talk Nerdy to Me Spider-man Homecoming

Jack and Troy from geek out about the upcoming Spider-man Homecoming movie

After the hack of Sony Entertainment we found out they were working with Marvel Studios to produce a string of Spider-man films.  We have already seen Spider-man in Captain America: Civil War.  Spider-man was easily one of the favorite characters of that movie.  The prior Spider-man movies have not been able to capture all the little nuances that make Spider-man so popular.  That seems to have changed now with Marvel back at the helm.

The movie has some big names in the cast.  Tom Holland will be returning as the title character.  Robert Downey Jr. will be reprising his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man.  Marisa Tomei is back as Peter Parker’s Aunt May.  Bokeem Woodbine has been signed to play an undisclosed villain.  Add to that Michael Keaton as the Vulture.  The route Marvel wants to take with the Spider-man films is to follow Peter Parker through his high school years.  They want to capture his conflicts as he struggles to balance normal high school issues with fighting deadly super-villains.

Marvel’s Plans

“We want to play with Spider-Man in the high school years because frankly there’ve been five Spider-Man films and… there are so many things from the comics that haven’t been done yet. Not just characters or villains or supporting characters, but sides to his character… I think it was midway through the first film that he graduated high school. At the beginning of the second Marc Webb film, he graduated high school. And some of my favorite Spider-Man arcs and Spider-Man stories, he’s in high school for a lot of it. We want to explore that. That also makes him very, very different from any of our other characters in the MCU…”

—Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios

Feige also said if additional films were made one of the ideas [Marvel] has is for the films to follow the model of the Harry Potter film series.  The plot of each film would cover a new school year, adding “it was sort of how do we do a journey for Peter not dissimilar for what the students of Hogwarts would go through each of their years”.

With Spider-man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe the door is open for other Marvel characters to appear alongside Peter Parker.  While he is great as a solo act, some of the best stories have him working with other superheroes.

TNTM: Riri Williams will be the new Iron Man

Riri Williams in the new Iron Man Woman Heart

Tony Stark, a.k.a Iron Man, has gone through a lot of hard times.  He has even stopped being Iron Man a time or two.  Quite a few other people have worn the Iron Man armor.  The most recent person to step in and fill the void left by Tony taking an Iron Man hiatus is Riri Williams.

Riri Williams is a former M.I.T. student with a genius-level intellect.  She is smart enough to reverse-engineer Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit.  Riri is able to build one of her own from scratch using materials she found around campus. She was able to test drive/fly her new suit and showed her affinity for fighting crime by stopping two convicts as they attempted to escape the New Mexico Penitentiary. She damaged her homemade armor beyond repair in the process.

All of this caught the eye of Tony Stark. Tony had just returned to being Iron Man after the Secret Wars.  Tony recently announced that he would be taking a step back from his role inside the Iron Man suit. With Tony stepping down as the one of the world’s superhero leaders there was a gap to be filled.  Riri has the heart, but she doesn’t quite have the experience.  She will receive some mentoring from the most unlikely of candidates.

Ironheart steps in

When Riri Williams assumes the lead role in November’s Invincible Iron Man relaunch she won’t be getting the ‘Iron Man’ name. Marvel announced that Williams’ superhero code-name will be Ironheart.  Marvel Chief Creative Officer, Joe Quesada, coined the new name.

“Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some,” explained Bendis, the title’s writer. “Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. Ironheart speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole. Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story they’ll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe’s suggestion was.”

Talk Nerdy to Me: Doctor Strange Preview

A lot of popular comic book mystical characters run into difficulties on TV or the big screen. You could argue it is due to poor casting choices or weak scripts (Keanu Reeves as Constantine comes to mind).

We tend to believe the popularity of a character has more to do with how you relate to them. The more human and flawed a character seems, the easier it is to like that character. Watching or reading how a character deals with their inner demons and struggles with their conflicts add depth to a character. Doctor Strange has all of this to the nth degree.

Dr. Stephen Strange is a former neurosurgeon. He was a brilliant but egotistical surgeon concerned only with the wealth he earned from his career. A car accident shatters the bones in his hands. The damage effectively ends his ability to conduct surgery since his hands now tremble uncontrollably. Too proud to take on a teaching job, Strange desperately searches for a way to restore his hands. He consults doctors, homeopathic treatments, and travels around the world to remote regions for exotic cures.

Meeting the Ancient One

During his travels he encounters the Ancient One. He becomes a student the old Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange becomes a practitioner of both the mystical arts as well as martial arts. He has a costume with two mystical objects. The Cloak of Levitation and Eye of Agamotto. These items give him added powers.

Doctor Strange is aided along the way by his friend and valet, Wong. He also has a large assortment of mystical objects. He takes up residence in a mansion called the Sanctum Sanctorum, located in Greenwich Village in New York City. Strange serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

The movie will be in theaters November 4, 2016. Benedict Cumberbatch is portraying Doctor Strange.

TNTM Marvel Prostate Cancer Awareness

Marvel Comics has teamed up with the American Cancer Society to promote Prostate Cancer Awareness.  This is a very serious issue among men, especially since men don’t typically like to talk about their health problems.

The number of new cases of metastatic prostate cancer climbed 72% in the past decade (2004 to 2013).  The frequency of Prostate Cancer is actually higher than that of Breast Cancer.  These facts should be alarming enough for folks to take notice and start advocating awareness programs.

Throughout the month of September the world’s most popular Marvel Super Heroes (Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Thor, and the Avengers) will be featured on all-new variant covers with special light blue-colored costumes to bring awareness to one of the most common cancers among men.

Awareness Campaign

“Working with The American Cancer Society, we learned that more than 2 million men in the US count themselves as prostate cancer survivors and it’s an honor to continue bringing awareness to further increase the survival rate,” David Gabriel, SVP Sales & Marketing, Marvel, said in a press release. “We hope that all our fans take a moment during the month of September to educate themselves, as well as their loved ones, on how they can work with their healthcare provider on how to combat this disease.”

“The American Cancer Society is honored to be invited to work with Marvel to raise awareness of prostate cancer this September,” added Dr. Richard Wender, Chief Cancer Control Officer for the American Cancer Society. “This campaign will allow us to share critical information with Marvel fans on how to take positive action to ensure better health for both themselves and their loved ones.”

Marvel’s Prostate Cancer Awareness variant covers go on sale this September.

TNTM Marvel Civil War II comic book review

Jack and Troy from get all geeky about the new Marvel storyline, Civil War II.

In the first Civil War series, The point of contention was the Superhero/Mutant Registration Act.  For those who aren’t familiar with that story-line, The government wanted all those with mutant powers to register with them.  The government wanted to regulate mutant activity to prevent another disaster occurring as a result of a superhero accident or misuse of power.  Some mutants disagreed with the Act and refused to register.  The Civil War was the pro-registration mutants fighting the anti-registration mutants.

** Warning, spoilers may appear below **

Civil War II is centered around the idea of free will.  An Ohio State University student named Ulysses comes in contact with Terrigen mist.  The mist gives him powers of precognition (like the 3 pre-cogs in the movie Minority Report).  One group of mutants led by Captain Marvel’s includes Captain America (Steve Rogers), War Machine, Spider-Man, Vision, Medusa, Blue Marvel, Winter Soldier, Spectrum, She-Hulk, Hawkeye, and Ant-Man (Scott Lang) wants to use Ulysses to determine crimes and give out punishment BEFORE the actual crime is committed.

A second group of mutants led by Iron Man with teammates Captain America (Sam Wilson), Thor (Jane Foster), Black Panther, Star-Lord, Luke Cage, Hercules, Miss America, Daredevil, Black Widow, Hulk (Amadeus Cho), and Deadpool believes your fate is not pre-determined and punishment cannot be given before a crime.

Ulysses has a precognition about Thanos causing trouble.  War Machine and She-Hulk attempt ambush Thanos.  During the fight Thanos kills War Machine and critically wounds She-Hulk.  Iron Man vows to never let this happen again and kidnaps Ulysses.   In response the Inhumans attack Stark Tower but are stopped by the Avengers. To avoid further incident they agree to confront Iron Man together at the secret facility where he has been running tests on Ulysses.

During the confrontation, Ulysses has a vision of Hulk killing the Avengers. Later, former Hulk Bruce Banner is approached by Captain Marvel at his laboratory outside Alpine, Utah.

All of this is in the first two issues.  It appears Marvel is taking this story-line seriously.  They have already offed fan favorite War Machine and it appears She-Hulk may be following him.  Civil War II so far is an all out brawl with both sides believing deeply that they are right.  If you like story arcs that make you stop and think whose side you’d be on, this is for you.  Some serious thought went into me choosing to side with Iron Man.

I don’t believe a crime can be punished if it is not committed.  There is a strong argument about stopping death/catastrophe if possible as well.  Whose side are you on?

TNTM Laura Kinney X-23 is All New Wolverine

Jack and Troy from geek out about the All-New Wolverine. It’s not Logan using that name in Marvel Comics any more. It’s Laura Kinney (X-23), a clone made from his damaged DNA.

X-23 took on the Wolverine mantle following the Secret Wars event. She has a new costume resembling Wolverine’s. X-23 is now the main character in the series All-New Wolverine.

X-23 is a female clone of Wolverine. X-23 has a regenerative healing factor, superhuman strength, senses, speed, agility, and reflexes similar to Wolverine. She also has retractable adamantium-coated bone claws in her hands and feet.

In addition to her own innate powers and skills, X-23 has twice been the host of the Enigma Force, providing her with many special abilities particular to the entity. She is the first mutant to be chosen by the entity as its host, as well as being one of a handful of individuals to do so more than once.

Cloned from a damaged copy of Wolverine’s genome, X-23 was created to be the perfect killing machine. For years she proved herself a capable assassin working for an organization called the Facility. A series of tragedies eventually led her to Wolverine and the X-Men. She attended school at the X-Mansion and eventually became a member of X-Force.

The only genetic sample from Weapon X is damaged. They are unable to salvage the Y chromosome. After 22 failed attempts at reconstituting the DNA using a duplicate X chromosome, the 23rd sample yields a viable sample to combine with an embryo.

After seven years X-23 is exposed to radiation poisoning in order to activate her mutant gene. He extracts her claws, coats them with adamantium, and reinserts them back into her hands and feet. This procedure was performed without affording the child any anesthetic. A “trigger scent” is derived that drives X-23 into a murderous rage when she detects it. X-23 is then trained to be a hired assassin. She is ordered to kill “anyone … everyone … for a price.”

TNTM Theater Edition: X-Men Apocalypse

Jack and Troy from watched X-Men: Apocalypse and give you their review.

En Sabah Nur, aka Apocalypse, is an immortal. He is the first mutant in existence dating back to ancient Egypt. Apocalypse always chooses four henchmen mutants to be his “four horsemen”. He enhances these mutants already existing powers. His goal is to cleanse the earth and start anew with his chosen.

Apocalypse has been around so long because he can transfer his consciousness into other bodies. When he does this all his powers are transferred to the new body as well. He also gains any powers the new host body may have. He has accumulated many powers this way by selectively choosing mutants with powers he desires to be his new host body.

The movie begins with you witnessing Apocalypse during one of these transfers in ancient Egypt. The humans revolt and attempt to kill him, but only end up trapping him under a pyramid.

Fast forward to the 1980’s and a group of fanatics are praying at the pyramid and inadvertently awaken Apocalypse. When he walks around Egypt and sees what the world has become and how mutants are no longer in control of the world he decides to gather four horsemen and cleanse the world of humanity.

Apocalypse desires Professor X for his telekinetic ability to connect to everyone in the world at once. With this power he could rule the world with no resistance.

While taking Professor X, Apocalypse sends all nuclear weapons into space using Professor X’s telekinesis. Stryker tracks the origin of the telekinesis to the X-mansion. They incapacitate all the mutants and take some with them back to Alkali Lake (Department H, Weapon X Program).

Jean Grey, Scott Summers, and NightCrawler sneak along and end up releasing a test subject. This test subject just happens to be Wolverine. He works his way through the base and you last see him escaping into the Canadian winterland.

The X-men come to Professor X’s rescue. It takes all of them along with Jean Grey unleashing her dark powers to defeat him.

This is a Marvel movie so there is an after credits scene. You see someone from Essex Corp collect the Weapon X DNA sample from the Alkali Lake base. If you are familiar with Marvel Comics you should recognize the name. Nathan Essex is Mr. Sinister who is a known connection to Apocalypse.
