TNTM – New Mortal Kombat movie to include fatalities

Many of my hard earned quarters disappeared into the bowels of various versions of the Mortal Kombat game.

Mortal Kombat is a fighting tournament between the representatives of the realms of Earth and Outworld conceived by the Elder Gods amid looming invasion of the Earth by Outworld. If the realm of Outworld wins Mortal Kombat ten consecutive times its Emperor Shao Kahn will be able to invade and conquer the Earth realm.

The series has a reputation for high levels of violence.  Each character has a finishing move called a fatality (finishing moves allow the player to finish off their defeated opponent).  The creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) is largely attributed to the game.  Mortal Kombat was the first ever fighting game to introduce the concept of unlocking a secret fighter by fulfilling certain requirements.

The 2011 Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition awarded the Mortal Kombat series with ten world records, including the “largest promotional campaign for a fighting video game” (Mortal Kombat 3), “highest grossing film based on a beat ‘em up video game” (Mortal Kombat 1996), and “most successful video game spin-off soundtrack album” (Mortal Kombat: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).

The original game has spawned many sequels and spin-offs consisting of several action-adventure games, a comci book series, a card game, films, and television series.  A new Mortal Kombat movie is in the works.  It will be produced by Aquaman’s James Wan. The movie will have an R-rating.

Screenwriter Greg Russo has confirmed that this new movie will have the one thing missing from the original movie, fatalities!  The unique finishing moves that defined the whole Mortal Kombat video game series will now be in the movies.  With the CGI capabilities we have now, these fatalities should more than earn the R-rating.

The only question is… which fatalities will be featured in the movie?  I need to hear at least one “Get over here!” in this new movie or I will feel incomplete.  Another question is… will we see the follow on to the fatality finishing moves… the babalities?

Russo has also gone on to say about the upcoming movie, “It’s very R rated and it’s much more like the game,” You can’t ignore that there’s a Mortal Kombat 11. To be clear, we’re not remaking the 1995 movie and we’re not doing the story-line that’s in Mortal Kombat 11 because there’s been a whole universe. It’s like comic books. So we’re going back and looking at some of the older story-lines and some of the mythology, being very, very, very, very aware of each character’s origin, their nationality, being very sensitive to that, being authentic to that.”

Everything I am hearing so far has me sooo excited for this new Mortal Kombat movie.  Filming is scheduled to start in Australia later in 2019.  The release date is being advertised as March 5th, 2021.  That gives you over a year break out the old consoles and get reacquainted with those characters.

We have a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts. If they are good, we will use them on the show. The number is (575) 323-1332.

Later nerds.

Video+Story: TNTM Talks June and July Comic Book Update

A lot of comic book related events happened in June and the first half of July. There was planned weddings that didn’t happen and unplanned ones that did. Marvel decided to relaunch (Fresh Start) a lot of their comics.

Some of those new comics have had their release date pushed back. It’s just been a mess from the big two publishers.

There is a rumor about the Mortal Kombat movie series being rebooted. The early word is they aren’t gonna use a lot of their video game characters. We think that would be a big mistake.

Black Widow is set to get her own movie. We need a good superhero movie with a strong female protagonist. Let’s just hope they write a good script because the Black Widow character has a very interesting backstory.

All of this just scratches the surface of all the pop culture stuff that has happened in the past coupla months. What important stuff did we miss? Tell us about it in the comments.
