El Paso Street Art Garners International Attention via UK’s ‘The Guardian’

The street art that has always been a significant part of El Paso’s cultural identity has captured international attention, with a feature in The Guardian, a media outlet based in the United Kingdom.

“Recognizing El Paso’s rich mural heritage, MCAD has worked to incentivize, seed and support production of more murals throughout the community. In 2018 alone, we supported the creation of nine new murals by local and internationally renowned street artists,” said Tracey Jerome, Director of MCAD.

The photo essay published in the December edition of the publication features several murals that were funded by the Museum and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD) through its cultural funding program or as direct commissions for special events.

While El Paso’s murals are spread throughout the city, the greatest concentration is in Downtown El Paso and Segundo Barrio.

El Paso’s Downtown Management District (DMD), with the assistance of MCAD, established a grant program to help business and property owners establish and restore murals within downtown El Paso.

The funding provided by MCAD and DMD also provide further opportunities to engage local artists in creating these murals.
