Iconic El Paso Fashion Store ‘Tres Mariposas’ Closing

When Tres Mairposas owner Nan Napier recently posted a message on the fashion store’s Facebook page about a going out of business sale, customers were saddened by the news.

“Thank you for being El Paso’s icon in fashion, and most of all, customer service,” one customer wrote.

Another wrote: “You have done so much for El Paso fashion and El Paso women with your vision. We will miss you.”

That outpouring of support shouldn’t come as a surprise to those familiar with Tres Mariposas, which first opened its doors in El Paso in 1970 and has earned a reputation as the region’s premier fashion destination.

The store’s loyal customer following has steadily grown over the years since Napier took over Tres Mariposas (three butterflies) from her father-in-law in 1979.

“I really wanted the challenge of being an entrepreneur and was young and didn’t know any better,” laughs Napier.

After spending nearly 40 years running Tres Mariposas, Napier felt the time was right to seek out other opportunities.

Napier said she’ll miss her customers, including a loyal shopper who brought everybody lunch after the store caught fire during the busy holiday season in 1989.

She’ll also miss her staff. One thing she’s been passionate about was helping employees succeed. She explains, “I wanted to create women helping women atmosphere – I wanted to be successful and I wanted to help other women to that, as well.”

She recognized the need for an alternative to commission-based compensation for her sales staff because it didn’t reward teamwork and didn’t contribute to the customer experience. After extensive research, she developed an innovative, team-based pay system that was fair and, above all, put the customer at the center of attention.

The result?

“You could definitely see an improvement across the board,” Napier said. “My staff was reluctant at first but soon embraced it. I think it really made a difference.”

For Napier, a grandmother of two with another grandchild on the way, life after Tres Mariposas promises a new chapter in her life. Both of her grown children live overseas, so she’ll have more time to travel to see them and also spend time with her husband Sam, a local doctor who is an avid sportsman.

She may even develop some of her own hobbies. “My hobby has always been my work – I’m looking forward to new adventures.
