Native El Pasoan, UTEP Grad Returns to Sun City to Anchor KTSM’s Newscasts

More than a few of us have left El Paso over our lifetimes. Be it for University, the military, or what we perceived as better opportunities; we have braved the unknown and headed out to chase our dreams.

Then, we come back.

We all have our different reasons: family, being homesick, or the City itself brings us back. I can picture Michael Corleone, from the Godfather, speaking of El Paso when he said, “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love El Paso and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I’ve seen the world, and nothing compares to what we have here. KTSM’s newest anchor, Natassia Paloma has done her share of traveling before returning home.

“A big thing is my roots here in El Paso, the reason why I came back,” says Natassia. “I had a baby when I was working in San Antonio. But, growing up here, my Grandmother who is from Juarez, and my mother who are so important to who I am, I wanted him to be around those people.”

Growing up in El Paso, and wanting to return home, so your children can be around family, is another thing that makes El Paso unique. It wants drive us, that connection to family, that wanting to be with family.

“I’ve always loved writing,” Natassia says. “In fifth grade, I joined my first official newspaper, at my elementary school.”

As for being a journalist? Writing has been a way of life for Natassia, as she joined school newspapers along the journey to KTSM.

“I’ve always loved writing,” Natassia says. “In fifth grade, I joined my first official newspaper, at my elementary school.”

Natassia is a graduate of UTEP, where she majored in Journalism. After graduation she worked for the Victoria Advocate as a diversity reporter where she was able to meet with and write about a diverse community- even scoring interviews that connected to events in Pakistan and other parts of the world.

I think a lot of Natassia,” says Chris Cobler, an editor at the Victoria Advocate.

“She was a very good reporter for us. What I appreciate about her is that has the newspaper chops that she takes to television. I think that’s in the spirit of Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather. The best TV journalist Edward Murrow had a newspaper background before he went to TV.”

From the newspaper, she moved to KVCT, a Fox affiliate in Victoria, Texas. Then, she found herself at KENS5 in San Antonio. Now, she’s back in El Paso, at KTSM where she was once an intern during the morning show with Noreen Jaramillo and Mark Mathis.

“I remember Natashia as a focused and motivated person,” says Noreen Jaramillo, now with Emergence Health Network. “You could see her drive, her potentional. Working on the morning show, as an intern, you must possess that drive. With her connections to El Paso, I am glad she is joining the team at NewsChannel 9.”

Natassia roots run deep in El Paso. From a childhood in the Segundo Barrio and El Paso’s East Side to her work on UTEP’s Borderzine, she brings a wealth of experience and knowledge about the city; it’s people, heritage, and history to the KTSM News anchor desk.

She’s an outgoing, charismatic individual who cares about the stories she covers. Just talking to her, about her work, her past, that comes across. She has the news and journalism in her blood.

Natassia’s first day on air will be Sunday, January 28; you can follow her on Facebook and Twitter.
