Video+Story: Walking Dead Season 9 Whisperer War

The Walking Dead comic book has been a great success for Image Comics. It has been an even bigger hit as a TV series for AMC. Sure, there are zombies (walkers) in the show, but they are merely background for the actual drama of the show.

The Walking Dead is really about how bad humans treat each other when the societal norms crumble and it becomes every man/woman for themselves to survive. Inevitably some people rise to the position of leader of their group. Some of those leaders are good (Rick Grimes). Other leaders go too far with their authority and become villains.

The Walking Dead has given us some really good villains in their run so far. We have had Merle Dixon, the Governor, Negan, and now we are gonna be introduced to the Whisperers.

The Whisperers are a group that believe to survive we need to devolve to a more animalistic nature. They don’t protect the women or the weak. They believe they must endure to make them tough enough to live. They travel around in suits made of walker skins and they speak in hushed zombie-like tones. They can direct herds of walkers this way and effectively use them as weapons.

In the comics the Whisperers take out quite a few named survivors. They make life very hard for the survivors until they finally reach the point of war. In the comics the Whisperer War takes place over 6 issues. I believe it will consume the second half of season 9 and possibly spill over into season 10. In the comics, Negan is also a big help for the survivors in defeating the Whisperers. The TV series has deviated from the comic book while staying mostly true to the plot. We are interested to see how the Whisperer War unfolds in the TV series.

What do you think about The Walking Dead Whisperer War? Do you think they are a good foe for the survivors? Let us know in the comments.

Video: Walking Dead Season 9 discussion

Walking Dead has been a juggernaut in both comics and television. The Walking Dead TV adaption has spawned a spin-off series, Fear the Walking Dead, and numerous games, merchandise, etc.

Walking Dead has proven it is not afraid to kill off popular characters. Season 9 will have us saying goodbye to Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Rick (Andrew Lincoln). These are two very central characters so it will be interesting to see how they write them off the series. They may leave it open so the actors can come back at some time in the future.

We also have to contend with the fact that Negan is still alive, even if detained. Negan is not one to give up easily. He is a persuasive talker and may wiggle his way back into a position of leadership.

Walking Dead has seen a decline in number of watchers over the past few seasons. They are still pulling approximately 8 million viewers per episode, which isn’t bad by any measure.

What are you hoping to see in season 9? Let us know in the comments.

Video: TNTM – Walking Dead Season 8 discussion

Walking Dead has been a ratings powerhouse since it first hit the airwaves in 2010. A lot of people point to the fact that their average number of viewers per season is going down. They want to use that as a harbinger of doom for the show.

Season 7 averaged 11.5 million viewers per episode down from a high in Season 5 of 14.38 million. Numbers don’t lie, there are less people watching the show now than a coupla years ago. In my book over 11 million viewers per episode is not a death knell. Walking Dead is still pulling big numbers. More importantly, they are selling lots of related merchandise. Even characters that have been dead for years on the show are highly sought out on the convention circuit. I don’t think Walking Dead is going away any time soon.

We discuss how we think Season 8 will unfold. The show has been loosely following the story-line from the comics. We are in the midst of the All-Out War. Will the show have the same result as in the comics? Will they deviate a bit and have a slightly different outcome? Most importantly, will any popular characters die in this war?

The one thing I know for sure about Season 8 is…. if Daryl dies, we riot.

TNTM: Top 5 AMC’s The Walking Dead characters

Our 5 favorite Walking Dead characters

The Walking Dead has been in print as a comic book since 2003 and as a TV series since 2010. A lot of great characters have been introduced in both mediums. We compile our top 5 favorite characters from both the comic book and TV series. Please leave your top 5 favorites in the comments.

Walking Dead in pop culture

Unless you have lived completely off the grid for the past 6 years, you know about The Walking Dead. This show has exploded on the pop culture scene. The zombie craze did well for this show. I propose the show is less about zombies than it is about how people treat each other when there are no rules applied to their behavior. Zombies are merely a backdrop to the story. While zombies do present a constant obstacle and are always something that needs to be dealt with, it is the brutal leaders of other groups that are the biggest threat (i.e. Governor, Negan, Terminus, Whisperers). You may disagree with my assessment.

Walking Dead history

A lot of folks don’t know The Walking Dead started out as an ongoing black-and-white comic book series created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore back in 2003. The comic book story focuses on Rick Grimes. Rick is a deputy who is shot in the line of duty and awakens from a coma in the zombie apocalypse. He eventually finds his wife and son along with other survivors. He assumes the role of group leader.

The TV series came along in 2010 on AMC. It was developed by Frank Darabont.
Much of the series takes place within the Atlanta, Georgia metro area and surrounding countryside. Rick’s group eventually makes their way Alexandria, Virginia.

The TV series makes a few changes from what is in the comics. The idea is for those who have read the comics to not be able to spoil it for the TV show watchers. There are even some characters that were developed specifically for the show that do not exist in the comics. They must be doing something right because both the show and the comic book are hugely successful.
