TNTM: Punisher on Netflix discussion

If you’ve been paying attention to Netflix you had to notice they are betting heavily on Marvel Comics characters. So far We have seen 2 Daredevil series, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Defenders. Now Netflix is promising to have The Punisher series on Netflix before the end of the year.

The Punisher, a.k.a Francis “Frank” Castle, is a Marvel Comics character created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. The Punisher made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129.

The Punisher is a vigilante who employs all manner of brutality to get get crime off the street. He started his crusade against crime after his wife and two children were killed by the mob for witnessing a killing in New York City’s Central Park. Frank used his military training as a United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper to systematically and efficiently take out criminals. There is no grey area with the Punisher. You are either good or bad. If you’re bad, he usually ends up killing you.

The Punisher typically works alone. He does have a few select people that help him fight crime. Microchip assists him by building and supplying weapons and technology. Some police officers/detectives have been known to help when they can. Lynn Michaels was a police officer who teamed up with Punisher to take down a serial rapist and later quit the force to become a vigilante. Lt. Martin Soap was secretly allied with the Punisher and gave him information on his targets from the police database.

Jon Bernthal will be reprising his role as Punisher (from Daredevil season 2). For many this was a highlight to the whole season. Daredevil season 2 was the Netflix audience’s introduction to the character. If the writing for the Punisher series is as good as the writing for his character in the Daredevil series, Netflix will have another hit on their hands.

TNTM: The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix

I was always a big Jim Henson fan growing up.  I never missed the Muppet Show and I loved all the movies.  Dark Crystal and Labyrinth were among my favorite movies.  Those movies hold up well even now.

Netflix has another potential big hit on their hands with the new Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series.  They have ordered a 10 episode series that will serve as the prequel to the original Dark Crystal movie.

Since this series is a prequel to the movie we will probably see some of the characters from the movie like Emperor Skeksis and Aughra.  The official plot description from Netflix is “When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”

Looks like the time frame will be just after one of the Urskeks accidentally cracked the crystal unleashing the Skeksis and all sorts of chaos, but before Jen and Kira embark on their epic journey.  We should see the rise of the Skeksis and the darkness they threw over the world of Thra.

Did you enjoy the Jim Henson TV shows and movies?  Are you excited to see the Dark Crystal prequel?  Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

TNTM: Marvel’s Iron Fist Netflix Original Series

Netflix has been killing it with their Marvel Comics super hero series. Their use of the oft-forgotten street level heroes has been a huge hit for them.

It all started with Daredevil taking on the Kingpin in Daredevil season one. Next we were introduced to Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in the Jessica Jones series.

The Luke Cage series gave us the back story on Luke as well as introducing Misty Knight and teasing Colleen Wing. Daredevil season 2 put the Punisher front and center. The Punisher was so well received they greenlit a series focused on him. Now we are getting to see Danny Rand/Iron Fist in his own series. All of this is leading up to the Defenders series where they all work together to stop crime in New York.

Finn Jones will star as Danny Rand/Iron Fist on the Netflix series scheduled for release on March 17, 2017. The plot has Danny returning to New York City after being presumed dead for 15 years. He has come back to reclaim his family’s company. When a threat emerges Danny must choose between his family’s legacy and his duties as the Iron Fist.

Who is Iron Fist?

Danny’s father, Wendell had found the mystical city of K’un-L’un as a young boy. During his time in K’un L’un, Wendell saved the life of the city’s ruler, Lord Tuan and was adopted by him. Wendell eventually left K’un L’un and became a wealthy entrepreneur in the United States.

Wendell later organized an expedition to rediscover K’un L’un. He took his wife, his business partner, and his nine-year-old son (Daniel). On the climb up the mountain, Daniel slips off the path. His tie-rope pulls his mother and father with him.

Wendell ends up falling to his death. Daniel and his mother come across a makeshift bridge that appears out of nowhere. They are then attacked by a pack of wolves. Daniel’s mother throws herself on the wolves to save him. The K’un L’un archers try unsuccessfully to save her. The archers take Daniel to see Yü-Ti, the hooded ruler of K’un L’un. Yü-Ti apprentices him to Lei Kung, the Thunderer, who teaches him the martial arts.

Daniel proves to be the most gifted of Lei Kung’s students. At 19 Daniel is given the chance to attain the power of the Iron Fist by fighting and defeating the dragon Shou-Lao the Undying. Shou-Lao guards the molten heart that had been torn from his body. Daniel figured out the heart provides life energy to Shou-Lao through the dragon-shaped scar on its chest. He covers the scar with his own body and hangs on until Shou-Lao collapses and dies. The process burned a dragon tattoo into his own chest. Daniel enters the dragon’s cave and plunges his fists into a brazier containing the creature’s molten heart. This grants him the power of the Iron Fist.

When K’un L’un reappears on Earth after 10 years, Daniel leaves to return to New York. It is during this time he teams up with Luke Cage to form Heroes for Hire. They will be uniting with Misty Knight, Jessica Jones, Daredevil to form a new group called the Defenders. Luke Cage is the only character that was consistently a member of the older Defenders comic book series. Marvel plans to launch a new Defenders comic book using these characters in 2017.

Iron Fists Powers and Abilities

Danny Rand has been infused with the dragon’s (Shou-Lao) superhuman energy. He has received extensive martial arts training from Lei Kung the Thunderer. Danny is able to concentrate his chi and the superhuman energy from Shou-Lao’s heart into his hand. He can use this “iron fist” to strike with superhuman hardness and impact. Summoning the power required to use this ability leaves Danny physically/mentally drained and unable to repeat the act for a time.

He is also able to focus his chi inward to heal himself or outward to heal others of injury. He can give himself psychic senses and telepathically fuse his consciousness with another person.

TNTM Moon Knight series on Netflix

Jack and Troy geek out about the news that Marvel is developing Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, and Blade for Netflix series.

Moon Knight is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin, the character first appeared in Werewolf by Night #32.

Marc Spector was born in Chicago, Illinois. He is an American rabbi’s wayward son. As an adult, Spector has been a heavyweight boxer, a U.S. Marine, and a mercenary. He becomes a strong and skilled combatant and befriends the French pilot Jean-Paul DuChamp, whom he calls “Frenchie”.

Spector works for African mercenary Raoul Bushman in Egypt. The group stumbles upon an archaeological dig whose crew includes Dr. Peter Alraune and his daughter Marlene. The dig had uncovered an ancient temple where artifacts included a statue of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu.  Bushman kills Dr. Alraune in order to loot the dig site. Spector takes offense to the murder and challenges Bushman to personal combat. As a result Spector is mortally wounded and left to die in the sub-zero temperatures of the desert night.

Roaming Egyptians who worship the ancient Egyptian gods find Spector and carry him to their temple.  They lay Spector before the statue of Khonshu as his heart stops. Khonshu appears to him in a vision and offers him a second chance at life if he becomes the god’s avatar on Earth.

Spector awakens, wraps himself with the silver shroud that covers Khonshu’s statue, and again confronts Bushman. He defeats Bushman and returns to America with Marlene Alraune, Frenchie, and the statue of Khonshu. Spector decides to become a crime-fighter. He creates a silver cloaked costume based on the silver shroud and becomes the Moon Knight.

While Batman is motivated by vengeance for wrong done to his parents, Marc Spector is motivated by vengeance as a concept. Huston further notes that Bruce Wayne, Batman’s alter ego, takes on other personalities merely to aid in his fight. However, Moon Knight has three alter egos which aid him as much in dealing with personal demons as fighting law-breakers, and which have taken a further psychological toll of causing dissociative identity disorder.

Netflix Daredevil with Punisher & Elektra

Daredevil on Netflix to have Punisher and Elektra

Jack and Troy from ZiaComics.com geek out about the new season of Daredevil on Netflix.

This is the first in a planned series of shows detailing the Marvel universe. “Daredevil” follows Matt Murdock.  He is an attorney by day and vigilante by night.

Matt was blinded in an accident as a child. He uses his heightened senses as Daredevil to fight crime on the streets of New York after the sun goes down.

His efforts are not welcomed by powerful businessman Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. Murdock’s day job portrays a man who believes in the criminal justice system. His alter ego suggests otherwise. He takes the law into his own hands to protect his Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood and the surrounding communities.

The origin story relates that while living in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, Matt Murdock is blinded by a radioactive substance that falls from an oncoming vehicle while pushing a man to safety from the oncoming truck. While he can no longer see, the radioactive exposure heightens his remaining senses beyond normal human ability and gives him a “radar sense”.

His father, a boxer named Jack Murdock, supports him as he grows up. Jack is later killed by gangsters after refusing to throw a fight. After donning a yellow and dark red costume (later all dark red), Matt seeks out revenge against his father’s killers as the superhero Daredevil. He fights against his many enemies including Bullseye and Kingpin. He also becomes a lawyer. Daredevil’s nickname is “the Man Without Fear”.

Daredevil has been home to the work of comic-book artists such as Everett, Kirby, Wally Wood, John Romita Sr., and Gene Colan, among others. Frank Miller had an influential tenure on the title in the early 1980s and cemented the character as a popular and influential part of the Marvel Universe. Daredevil has since appeared in various forms of media including several animated series, video games and merchandise, and a feature-length film where he was portrayed by Ben Affleck. Charlie Cox plays the title character in Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix that premiered on April 10, 2015.
