TNTM: Marvel Comics New Mutants movie discussion

Marvel Comics The New Mutants are a group of teenaged mutant superheroes-in-training. They are a spin-off of the X-Men franchise.

The first team of New Mutants characters was created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. They first appeared in 1982’s Marvel Graphic Novel #4. They were featured in their own title from 1983 until 1991.

The New Mutants movie will be distributed by 20th Century Fox. The film is directed by Josh Boone from a screenplay by himself and Knate Lee. The cast for the movie is:

Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik: a Russian mutant with sorcery powers, who uses teleportation discs to travel. She is the sister of Colossus, a member of the X-Men seen in previous films in the series.

Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane: a Scottish mutant struggling to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf.

Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball: a Kentuckian mutant who can propel himself into the air and is invulnerable while doing so.

Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot: a Brazilian mutant with the ability to manipulate solar energy.

Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage: a Native American mutant who has the power to create illusions drawn from the fears and desires of a person’s mind.

Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes: a mentor to the group, and a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself.

TNTM: Marvel bringing Generation X back

We posted earlier about Marvel Comics Death of X leading into Inhumans vs X-men (IVX) leading into Resurrxion.  Marvel hasn’t told us a lot about their plans for this story arc just yet.  They have released some information about future titles.

Marvel announced an ongoing series spinning out of ResurrXion.  Generation X is making a comeback!

Generation X is a spin-off of the X-Men.  The team was created by writer Scott Lobdell and artist Chris Bachalo. Generation X debuted during the 1994 “Phalanx Covenant” story-line. They received their own monthly series later that year with Generation X #1 (November 1994).

Generation X did not attend Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters and were not taught by Professor Xavier.  They were trained at the Massachusetts Academy and were mentored by Banshee and Emma Frost, the former villain White Queen.

Generation X consisted of:

  • Chamber – a British mutant who produced huge blasts of energy from his upper chest. When his powers first manifested, they destroyed the lower half of his face and chest, leaving him with only his limited telepathic powers with which to communicate and releasing him from any necessity to eat, drink, or breathe. Because of this he is characteristically sullen and bitter.
  • Gaia – formerly the otherworldly Guardian of the Citadel of the Universal Amalgamator, which could potentially be misused to combine all sentient consciousnesses into a single entity.
  • Husk – a Kentucky coal miner’s daughter who could shed her skin revealing a different substance each time. She is the younger sister of The New Mutants Cannonball and elder sister of Icarus.
  • Jubilee – a Chinese-American “mall rat” from Beverly Hills, California who could produce explosive energy.
  • M – a “perfect” young woman born into a rich family from Monaco who could fly, possessed super strength, and had telepathic abilities.
  • Mondo – a cheerful, laidback Samoan mutant who could take on the texture of objects he touched.
  • Penance – a silent, childlike, and mysterious mutant who possessed diamond hard red skin and razor-sharp claws.
  • Skin – a former reluctant teenage gang member on the streets of East Los Angeles who possessed six feet of extra skin. He could stretch his extremities, but mostly considered his mutation, which caused him to have sagging gray skin and painful headaches, a curse.
  • Synch – an African-American teenager from St. Louis known for his pleasant and supportive temperament. He could copy the powers of other mutants/super-humans within close physical proximity.

Generation X

Looking at the teaser for this new Generation X title, it appears there are incarnations of several teen X teams.  It is still undetermined who will comprise the new team of Generation X. “Generation X” will debut alongside “Jean Grey,” “Iceman” and “Weapon X” in spring 2017.

TNTM: The New Mutants Movie Line-Up

The plan is to have the X-men spin-off title, The New Mutants, to hit the big screen in 2017.

The movie will focus on the angst-driven adventures of a diverse group of teens that include Native American Danielle Moonstar, Scots girl Wolfsbane, Brazilian ladies man Sunspot, a Kentuckian code-named Cannonball, and Russian teen Magik, and an alien named Warlock.

This friend-self is hoping the movie can do justice to Warlock.  He is one of my top ten favorite comic book characters.

The New Mutants of the comics were teen-aged students of Professor Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. The original team consisted of:

  • Cannonball (Samuel Guthrie) a mild-mannered Kentuckian who became near invulnerable when rocketing through the air.
  • Karma (Xi’an Coy Manh) a 19-year-old Vietnamese girl who could mentally possess other people’s bodies.
  • Mirage (Danielle Moonstar, originally codenamed Psyche) a Cheyenne who could create visual empathic three-dimensional illusions.
  • Sunspot (Roberto da Costa) a Brazilian who gained superhuman strength fueled by sunlight and could store solar energy in his body to use his super strength during the night.
  • Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair) a Scot who could transform into a wolf-like creature.

After the apparent death of Karma the new recruits included:

  • Cypher (Douglas Ramsey) could learn any language, spoken or written, at an exponential rate, whether it was human, alien, or machine, making him an unmatched computer expert.
  • Magik (Illyana Rasputin) sister of the Russian X-Man Colossus and long-time resident of the X-Mansion, an accomplished mystic who could open “teleportation discs” allowing travel to Limbo and from there, any point on Earth.
  • Magma (Amara Juliana Olivians Aquilla) a fiercely tempered native of a secret Roman society in the Amazon who can control lava.
  • Warlock an extraterrestrial of the techno-organic race known as the Technarchy.

With the success of the X-men movies as of late, this New Mutants movie should fare well.  Having super powered teenagers dealing with their normal adolescent problems along with trying to save the world should make for a pretty good movie.
