Trio of UTEP Men’s Golfers Honored as Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars

NORMAN, Ok. – UTEP 2018 graduates Charles Corner and Nicklas Pihl, and rising senior Settavut Paradee were recognized for their outstanding performances in the classroom as well as the golf course.

The trio of UTEP men’s golfers were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Wednesday. Corner, Pihl and Paradee were among a record 265 student-athletes in Division I who were honored.

Scholars for Division I must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

For Corner and Pihl, it is their second year in a row being honored by the GCAA.

Corner and Pihl each recently graduated with a degree in finance, while the pair were also named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the fourth consecutive year. Paradee was named to the C-USA Honor Roll for a third straight year.

Corner is coming off a spectacular season, leading the Miners in top 10 finishes (five), while being the top finisher in five events during the 2017-18 season. Corner played in 14 tournaments, including the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. On the season, Corner produced a team-best 72.1 stroke average.

Pihl played in 12 tournaments and finished as the top Miner three times, including the 2018 C-USA Championship in Texarkana, Ark. Pihl tallied a 73.9 stroke average.

Paradee played in 12 tournaments and fashioned a 74.8 stroke average. Paradee tied as the top UTEP finisher at the Gene Miranda Invitational in Colorado Springs, Co.

Three UTEP Men’s Golfers Honored for Academics

NORMAN, Ok.- Three UTEP men’s golfers were recognized for their outstanding performance in the classroom as well as the golf course.

Returning seniors Charles Corner and Nicklas Pihl along with recent graduate Frederik Dreier were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for Division I, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Wednesday. The trio was among the new record number of student-athletes that earned All-America Scholar status, which totaled 260 in Division I.

To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade point average of 3.2. High moral character and good standing at the potential recipient’s university is also factored in.

Corner, Pihl, and Dreier were all named to the 2016-17 Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, for keeping a GPA of 3.0 or better, and have maintained their stay on the honor roll since arriving at UTEP.

Two-time C-USA Golfer of the Year Dreier recorded a team-leading 71.4 stroke average in 13 tournaments while Corner, a C-USA second team selection, finished the year with a 72.6 stroke average while participating in 12 tournaments. Pihl, competing in 12 tournaments, finished the year with a 74.0 stroke average.

The trio was also part of the 2017 Conference USA Championship team and made the trip to the NCAA Washington Regional.

UTEP Men’s Golf Closes Out Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz.- The opening tournament of the spring season came to a close as the UTEP men’s golf team finished in 13th place at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Arizona. Reigning NCAA champion and Arizona Intercollegiate champion Oregon took home the crown. 

The Miners had a strong start to the tourney on Monday, ending round one in sixth place while round two was called early due to darkness. The Miners began the day completing round two and after, immediately starting round three. 

UTEP shot their low team score in the third round at eight over par (292) for a tournament total of 902. Miner senior Frederik Dreier led the way for the team, firing two over par 215 (69-77-69) to finish tied for sixth.

Andreas Sorensen finished in a tie for 42nd at 14 over par 227 (78-77-72) while Charles Corner and Nicklas Pihl both ended the day tied for 53rd at 17 over par 230. Corner shot rounds of 75-78-77 and Pihl fired 79-77-74. Ben Getman rounded out the Miners scorecard in a tie for 82nd after shooting 27 over par 240 (82-78-80)

The Miners will look to bounce back in three weeks when they take the trip to Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii to compete in the John Burns Intercollegiate February 15-17.
