Darth Maul is introduced in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. He is the Sith apprentice to Emperor Sheev Palpatine (Darth Sidious). They don’t give much information about the character in the movie. In fact, he is sliced in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber. Even with his short time in the movie he became one of the most popular characters.
There have been many stories written about him surviving his defeat by Obi-Wan.
Darth Maul does appear in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. You learn more about his origin in the third season of Clone Wars. Darth Maul is a warrior of the Nightbrother clan on the planet Dathomir. This planet is inhabited by the dominant Nightsister witchcraft society led by Mother Talzin. Maul’s tattoos are described as the markings of a warrior.
It is also revealed that he has a brother named Savage Opress.Darth Maul becomes insane and suffers amnesia as a result of being defeated by Obi-Wan. Savage Opress finds Maul and brings him to Mother Talzin back on Dathomir. Talzin is able to restore Maul’s mind and gives him robotic legs. Maul sets out with Opress as his apprentice to get his revenge on Obi-Wan.

Marvel has been doing a spectacular job with the Star Wars comics. With Darth Maul being one of the most popular characters in the Star Wars Universe it is safe to assume this comic will be flying off the shelves at your local comic book store.
