City to Hold Final Community Meeting, Show Plans for Paseo de las Luces Project

The community has provided its input and the final plans for the Paseo de las Luces project are set.

Community members are invited to the final Paseo de las Luces community meeting from on Wednesday, in the lobby of the Mills Building (300 N. Oregon Street) from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Residents will be able to check out the plans for what city official call a “bright, glittering corridor of signature archways, vibrant tree lights, festive string lights, improved parking and stalls for food trucks that will beautify and link the core of Downtown El Paso to Ciudad Juárez.”

The Paseo de las Luces project is part of the City of El Paso’s Sun City Lights initiative. The initiative was created to capitalize on the distinct identities of several of the most vibrant neighborhoods all across El Paso. The Paseo de las Luces will stretch along South El Paso Street from the Plaza Theatre to the Paso del Norte International Bridge.

In 2008, the American Planning Association named South El Paso Street one of the ten great streets in America for its architectural importance and cultural significance, calling it the place “where American and Mexican cultures come face to face.”

The City of El Paso has contracted with in*situ architecture of El Paso to design this project. in*situ has provided design services for other city projects including the John Mulligan Building, the Eastside Regional Park Recreation Center and the Westside Pool.

Residents are invited to come see what’s in store for this beautiful and historic El Paso neighborhood.

City Approves Final Scope of Work, Budget for Paseo De Las Luces Project

Construction will soon being on improvements to Paseo De Las Luces, an iconic corridor in the heart of El Paso’s Downtown Shopping District that has long served as a gateway welcoming international travelers.

On Tuesday, City Council approved a resolution increasing the project’s budget to $6.4 million to cover an expanded scope of work. The project will be funded through a tax increment reinvestment zone and revenues from both Saturday parking meters and international bridges toll fees.

“This is more than just a street improvement project,” Capital Improvement Department Director Sam Rodriguez said. “This iconic corridor connecting San Jacinto Plaza to our international bridges will be reenergized. The project honors our cultural heritage while creating a great space for our residents and visitors, and serving as a catalyst for economic development for our binational and tristate region.”

Construction will begin this month and the work completed by the end of the year. The street improvements will enhance street and pedestrian safety while creating new economic development opportunities by bringing together public art, urban design, and neighborhood revitalization strategies.

Signature archways will adorn the entrances to the heritage corridor, adding to the great streetscape that will be both walkable and welcoming. In addition, string lights will span the width of the street and wrap around new trees.  The decorative archways are part of the Sun City Lights initiative.

This project is part of the City’s efforts to promote the visual image of El Paso and enhance quality of life through recreational, cultural and educational environments.

City Asking For Public’s Input on design for Sun City Lights Project featuring Paseo de las Luces

The City of El Paso is seeking community input on design work for the Sun City Lights Project featuring the Paseo de las Luces, the stretch of South El Paso Street between the Paso del Norte international bridge and the Plaza Theater which serves as the gateway into El Paso from Juárez.

The Sun City Lights initiative aims to define and highlight entrances to the City’s iconic corridors and neighborhoods to create new economic development opportunities by combining public art, urban design, and neighborhood revitalization strategies.

The Paseo de las Luces project would include a signature archway, tree lights, string lights draping the street, improved parking, stalls reserved for food trucks, and parklets – sidewalk extensions that create vibrant public gathering spaces.
