Museum of History celebrates Downtown Culture with new photography exhibit

The El Paso Museum of History (EPMH) invites the public to view and celebrate the opening of a new exhibition, Pasos Urbanos: A Photographic Narrative of the Borderlands Downtown Culture.

“Downtown El Paso is currently experiencing a renaissance that reflects border culture through new development initiatives not only rooted in economic growth but also the arts and culture sector,” said EPMH Director Dr. Vladimir von Tsurikov. “To capture these elements through photography is important to our history and gives the community an opportunity to witness history as it is being made.”

Pasos Urbanos is composed of selected images from local photographers over the age of 18, currently residing within 150 miles of Downtown El Paso, including Ciudad Juarez.

Earlier in August, EPMH put out a call for photography, asking applicants to capture the vibrant culture and new developments that make downtown an exciting, dynamic space.

The binational component is meant to strengthen the relationship between the two sister cities, celebrating a shared past, present, and future.

Nearly 500 images were submitted representing downtown culture. Of the 98 photographers who submitted their work, 48 will have their images featured in Pasos Urbanos, with 54 photographs chosen. A panel of community art administrators and two notable photographers from El Paso and Juarez selected the photographs.

The Pasos Urbanos photography exhibit opens this Thursday, November 14 at 5:30 p.m. and will be on display through April 12, 2020.

The public is invited to attend a free opening reception on November 14. For more information, call the El Paso Museum of History at (915) 212-3159.
