ROUND ROCK, Texas – El Paso Chihuahuas left fielder Alex Dickerson has been named the 2015 Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year, the league announced today.
Dickerson, from Poway, California, was voted the league’s top rookie after a balloting of the PCL field managers and media representatives from across the league. The award was created in 1998 and honors a player’s outstanding achievement during his first year at the Triple-A level.
The award for Dickerson comes a day after being named to the All-PCL Team as an outfielder. The 25-year-old is hitting .309 in his first Triple-A season, owning the league’s tenth-best batting average. He also ranks third in the PCL with 82 runs scored, fourth in extra-base hits with 57, and tied for second in triples with nine.
Dickerson has the second-most home runs (12) and RBI (71) on El Paso’s roster this season.
His .505 slugging percentage is the highest in his five-year career, while his .881 OPS is four points away from his career-high. Dickerson had a brief call-up to the San Diego Padres in early August, making his MLB debut on Aug. 6 in Milwaukee.
The following day he recorded his first major league hit with a single against Philadelphia at Petco Park.
The Padres acquired Dickerson from the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization on Nov. 25, 2013 in a three-player trade. The Pirates originally selected the Indiana University alum in the third round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. Over five minor league seasons, Dickerson boasts a .301 career average with 200 extra-base hits.
The Rookie of the Year award is the second he has received in his career, having also won the award from the Eastern League in 2013 as a member of the Altoona Curve. Dickerson is the second Padres’ farmhand to ever win the award from the PCL, as he joins Portland’s Sean Burroughs who won the accolade in 2001.
Among the others to receive votes for the PCL Rookie of the Year award were Corey Seager (Oklahoma City), Peter O’Brien (Reno), Joey Wendle (Nashville), Travis Taijeron (Las Vegas), and Jose Martinez (Omaha).
Below is the PCL’s end of the season awards schedule with the Pitcher of the Year winner set to be announced tomorrow.
· Pitcher of the Year – Wednesday, Sept. 2
· Most Valuable Player – Thursday, Sept. 3
· Manager of the Year – Friday, Sept. 4
