UTEP to close on day of Pope’s Visit; Sun Bowl to simulcast Juarez Mass

UTEP officials announced the closure of the campus on February 17th – the day Pope Francis visits the Borderland.
In a Friday afternoon news release, UTEP officials said the closure was to allow for the use of the Sun Bowl so that residents could view the Pontiff’s Mass in Juarez, via a broadcast in the stadium.
Below are details of the announcement from UTEP:
“The El Paso-Juárez community has responded enthusiastically to the announcement of Pope Francis’s visit on Wednesday, February 17.  To enable the participation of residents on both sides of the border, the Catholic Diocese of El Paso has requested use of the Sun Bowl Stadium on the UTEP campus for a live feed broadcast of the mass which will be celebrated by the Pope that afternoon in Ciudad Juárez.
To manage anticipated pedestrian and vehicular traffic and ensure the safety and security of our students, faculty and staff, UTEP will close onWednesday, February 17. Only critical facilities support personnel and the UTEP Police Department will remain on duty. Those personnel are asked to check with their supervisors regarding work schedules.
The University will resume normal operating hours on Thursday, February 18.
In consultation with UTEP Faculty Senate leadership, Friday, May 6, which was originally scheduled as a study day (Dead Day) prior to final exams, has been designated as a class day to fulfill the Spring 2016 semester’s required instructional time.”

Diocese of El Paso warns of Papal ticket scam

With a little over a month to go before Pope Francis makes a historic visit to Juarez, officials with the Diocese of El Paso are warning of ticket scams related to the visit.

Elizabeth O’Hara, Communications Director for the Diocese of El Paso shared that the Pastoral Center had received information about residents being offered tickets to the Papal Mass

O’Hara stated,  “Tickets to the Mass in Juarez are not for sale…the sale of tickets is a scam.”

She went on to say that the Diocese of Juarez has not yet determined how many tickets will be allotted to the Diocese of El Paso, and the tickets are not yet available.

“Once the Diocese of El Paso has received tickets, a plan is underway for ticket distribution to the parishes,” O’Hara said, “An announcement for that will come only after the Diocese of El Paso receives tickets from Juarez.”

Vatican officials announced that Pope Francis will come to Juárez on February 17, at the end of his six-day tour of Mexico. The pontiff will fly into Juárez and is expected to visit CeReSo prison, meet with workers, and then celebrate a Mass at the border.

Pope Francis will celebrate Mass with more than 200,000 in attendance at the fairgrounds where the former Juárez Feria was held, in the Benito Juárez Olympic Stadium parking lot, and ending at the Chamizal Park near the Rio Grande.

A reminder that the second collection at Masses this weekend will be held to help the Diocese of Juarez offset some of their costs.

For those who can’t go to Mass this weekend, there is now an online option as well.  It can be found at: http://www.elpasodiocesefoundation.org/

Diocese of El Paso to Hold Special Collection for Pope’s Visit to Cd. Juárez

The Diocese of El Paso will hold a Special Collection in all parishes on Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 2016 for the Pope’s Visit to Cd. Juarez.

This appeal is to support Pope Francis’ forthcoming visit to the borderland of Cd. Juarez and El Paso.  Vatican officials announced that Pope Francis will come to Juárez on February 17, at the end of his six-day tour of Mexico. The pontiff will fly into Juárez and is expected to visit Cereso prison, meet with workers, and then celebrate a Mass at the border.

Pope Francis will celebrate Mass with more than 200,000 in attendance at the fairgrounds where the former Juárez Feria was held, in the Benito Juárez Olympic Stadium parking lot, and ending at the Chamizal Park near the Rio Grande River.

The Diocese of El Paso is planning events and activities on this side of the border leading up to and after the Pope’s visit including gathering at the Cesar Chavez Border Highway to watch the Papal Mass and live streaming the Pope’s visit at a public location.

The appeal on the weekend of January 9 and 10 is to ask for the support of parishioners to help the Diocese of Juarez with the expenses of the Papal Mass such as candles, hosts and the ciboria.  This is a unique opportunity for parishioners in the Diocese of El Paso to be part of the Papal Mass.
