EPISD: Papal visit preparations will impact school days at 10 campuses

The preparations and clean up after the visit of Pope Francis to the Border will require the early release and late start for students and employees at 10 EPISD campuses that are directly affected by road closures and other mitigating factors.

Administrators this week determined that based on the plans by federal, state and local officials, specific campuses near the Border Highway will have an early release at 2 p.m. on Feb. 16 and a late start of 10 a.m. on Feb. 18.

To accommodate the early release and late start, the impacted campuses will add three minutes to the end of the school day beginning Feb. 1 and ending on June 7. All EPISD schools and offices will be closed on Wednesday, Feb. 17, upon the advise of state and federal agencies that had concerns about safety and security concerns in relation to the visit of the Pontiff to Cd. Juárez.

The District also had concerns about unprecedented levels of absenteeism by students and employees.

The District will make up for the Feb. 17 closure by having classes on Feb. 15, the make-up day that was built into the school calendar.

The affected campuses are:

• Bowie High School

• Guillen Middle School

• Aoy Elementary School

• Douglass Elementary School

• Beall Elementary School

• Zavala Elementary School

• Jefferson/Silva Magnet High School

• San Jacinto Learning Center

• Heart Elementary School

• Burleson Elementary School
