TNTM: Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles team up in new comic book

Not since 1998 have these two powerhouse ninja groups crossed over.  In the fourth episode of Power Rangers in Space named Shell Shock, they meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the series Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation.

In that episode one of the Power Ranger’s enemies brainwashed the Turtles to infiltrate and take over the ship.  An electric storm erases the brainwashing and the Power Rangers return the Turtles to New York.

BOOM! Studios has worked out a deal with Hasbro, IDW, and Nickelodeon to bring these to awesome ninja teams together again, but this time in a comic book.  This team up of the Ninja Turtles and the Power Rangers will be a five issue mini-series called Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The premise for the mini-series is Green Power Ranger, Tommy Oliver, goes missing.  The Power Rangers track him down to New York.  When they find him they discover he has teamed up with Shredder.

Luckily they also run into the Ninja Turtles and find they have a common enemy. If you are fan of either franchise you will definitely want to check this mini-series out.  Issue #1 is scheduled to be on the shelves December 4th.

Press Release

BOOM! Studios, under license by Hasbro, Inc. and in partnership with IDW and Nickelodeon, today announced an all-new five-issue limited series event –  MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES! The Power Rangers arrive in New York City to find Tommy Oliver – AKA The Mighty Morphin Green Ranger – but soon discover he’s joined forces with the villainous Shredder and the Foot Clan! As the Rangers are sent reeling by this betrayal, they’re confronted by another (fr)enemy – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Can these heroes find a way to work together to defeat the bad guys and save the world from total destruction?!

TNTM: Power Rangers Necessary Evil introduces White Ranger

BOOM! Studios, under license by Hasbro, Inc., has announced that the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will make their official return after the events of Shattered Grid in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #40, arriving in stores June 2019.

The new series creative team of writer Ryan Parrott (Go Go Power Rangers) and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) begin a bold new era as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are back in Angel Grove…with the White Ranger as their leader! But what happened to the team after they defeated Lord Drakkon? And what does the White Ranger’s first appearance mean for the future of the team?

Those answers – and more – arrive in the first chapter of Power Rangers: Necessary Evil as shocking secrets are revealed!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #40 features a main cover by Jamal Campbell (Naomi), with variant covers by Goñi Montes (Sandman Universe) and Kris Anka (Runaways).

New York Times Bestselling author Ryan Parrott is a writer in multiple mediums. A graduate of Chapman University, Parrott has written on television series NBC’s Revolution and Hulu’s Chance.

In comics, Ryan was a co-writer on DC’s Batman: Gates of Gotham, several of IDW’s Star Trek titles, including Starfleet Academy, Boldly Go and Manifest Destiny, as well as the NBC series finale Revolution: Endgame. Parrott was one of the key architects of the landmark Power Rangers: Shattered Grid comic book event and currently writes Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers at BOOM! Studios, along with creator-owned projects Volition and Oberon for Aftershock Comics, and lives in Los Angeles with his wife.

power rangers“I’m writing Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The reality of that statement hasn’t quite sunk in yet but I’m sure when it does, I’ll feel a mixture of exhilaration, disbelief and sheer panic,” said writer Ryan Parrott.

“Working on the franchise for the last two years has been one of the most creatively rewarding experiences of my life, not only because of the incredibly talented people I get to collaborate with behind the scenes but also because of all the amazing fans I’ve encountered along the way. I’m not going to lie. Kyle Higgins set the bar unapologetically high with his work on the series so far, not to mention the biggest Power Ranger comic book event ever in Shattered Grid, but I’m looking forward to digging deep into these characters we all love and building off the stage that’s been set. May the power protect me.”

Born and raised in Milano, Daniele Di Nicuolo made his American comics debut with Mirror’s Edge at Dark Horse. He has since worked with numerous publishers like IDW Publishing on The Infinite Loop Vol. 2, distinguishing himself at BOOM! Studios on top-selling series including Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink and as the main artist on Mighty Morphn Power Rangers during the record-breaking Shattered Grid event celebrating the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

“If with Shattered Grid we went big, now we’re going deep, straight to the core of what means to be Power Rangers and, most of all, what consequences come from choices made for a greater good,” said artist Daniele Di Nicuolo. “I couldn’t be happier to reunite with BOOM! Studios and the Rangers again. I’m super excited to explore the fallout of the adventures that we started with Kyle and honored to face this new journey with a great writer like Ryan, my pal Walter Baiamonte and so much of the crew from Shattered Grid. It’s Morphin time again!”

Currently, Power Rangers is celebrating over 25 continuous years on the air, making it one of the longest running kids live-action series in television history with nearly 900 episodes aired to date. Created by Haim Saban and launched in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise celebrates its milestone anniversary year with the 25th season, Power Rangers: Super Ninja Steel currently airing on Saturdays at 12 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon in the U.S.

“The first appearance of the White Ranger is only one of the big revelations in Necessary Evil, as we learn just what happened after the Mighty Morphin team disappeared after the events of Shattered Grid,” said Dafna Pleban, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Ryan and Daniele, along with our partners at Hasbro, have crafted a Power Rangers epic with surprises around every turn and an ending that changes everything!

Audio: TNTM Interview with Jason David Frank

Jason David Frank, or JDF, is known mostly for his portrayal of Tommy Oliver in the Power Rangers universe.

He has been the Green, Red, White, Black, and even Ninja Ranger.  He was also Lord Drakkon in the Shattered Grid story-line.  He has reprised the role of Green and White Power Ranger in the BatintheSun “Super Power Beat Down” series.  He has also been Bloodshot in the Valiant Comics “Ninjak vs the Valiant Universe” web series.

We find out that JDF is working on his spoken word/poetry.  There are also plans for him to venture into the wrestling arena.  All of this is in addition to his busy appearance schedule.  We are happy he was able to find some time for us to do this interview.

If you listen close you can hear the airport announcements in the background as he was waiting to catch a flight.

Most importantly, we find out if JDF is Team Cake or Team Pie!

Paul Schrier and Jason Narvy portray Farkas “Bulk” Bulkmeir and Eugene “Skull” Skullovitch on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Bulk and Skull have been the one constant through all the different Power Rangers series.  They have been in numerous seasons and have seen multiple iterations of the Power Rangers.

They take time out of their busy days to talk about the early days of the Power Rangers, being portrayed by chimpanzees, and portraying Power Rangers themselves.

Their casting was perfect as they still play off each other brilliantly for comedic effect.  Listen to the interview as they regale us with tales of wonder from their storied careers.

El Paso Comic Con Returns, ‘Green Ranger’ Jason David Frank Among Stars in Town

The El Paso Comic Con is coming up this weekend at the El Paso Convention Center. On Wednesday I was able to talk with Jason David Frank, the original Green Ranger from the Power Rangers.

Before I ever attended my first Comic-Con, back in New York City, I had images of the Big Bang Theory running through my head. Remember the show where Raj dressed as Wonder Woman or was it Bat Girl?

So, what is a Comic-Con? Jason David Frank gave me his take on just what it is.

“I would say the newer, modern versions of Comic Cons, compared to what they used to be, are like a pop culture event,” said Jason. “They are beyond toys and comic books. There are interesting things there. Some have different kinds of food trucks.”

“There are different celebrities,” he said, “that you can meet from different shows.”

They are, like Jason also says, family events.

I’ve been to events where parents will take their kids, all dressed in costume, and have a blast. Like a family, years ago in NYC where the parents dressed as Princess Leia, and Darth Vader. The kids, they were Ewoks!

It’s also a time where parents can ignite that spark of discovery within their kids. Showing them the comics, you grew up with, and how those evolved. Maybe getting to meet someone who worked on the show, or comic, Dr. Who, and hoping they catch the Whovian spirit.

“Comic Cons, pretty much around the world, are about the same,” says Jason. “What makes it more interesting are the people. And I know El Paso is really excited about Comic Con.”

I did discover that Jason, who played Tommy Oliver, is one of the people who can make it interesting. Not only has he been on the Power Rangers, but he’s done work on the Transformers, the Junior Defenders, and so much more. (Author’s note: I honestly didn’t know who he was and had admitted that to him. You’ll hear me embarrassing myself in the call with him)

“I just did a promo for a trailer for Shattered Grid,” says Jason. “That’s the new version of the Power Rangers where I pray Lord Drakkon. It’s me in an alternate version….I did a new show called Ninjak vs. the Valiant Universe.”

The trailer for Power Rangers: Shattered Grid is worth checking out; the trailer for Ninjaak can be seen on YouTube

“In that, I play a character on the television side called Bloodshot,” he said. “Vin Diesel is doing Bloodshot this year in movie side, and I’m doing the Television side of Bloodshot.”

There is a bit of the real-life Power Ranger with Jason. He owns Red Dragon Karate School, Rising Sun Karate Academy. He’s an MMA pro. He’s an eighth-degree black belt. Jason also won the Master of the Year (American Karate). He’s even in the Guinness Book of World Records- in January 2013 he broke the most pine boards in freefall).

Another thing about Jason, he’s personable. He’ll stay at Comic-Con and take the time to meet the last person, who was waiting in line forever to meet him. Meeting with and talking to everyone is important to him. Something rare with most famous people.

And then there are the proposals.

“I get a lot of proposals, where I don’t know what’s going on,” says Jason. “I open a box, and a ring pops in, the next thing they are saying will you marry me type of thing.” I can only imagine. I can’t even imagine the people who have asked him to autograph babies, but he says
it’s happened.

“Take a day out of your time and check out Comic-Con,” says Jason David Frank. “Take one day out of your schedule and try to come to a Comic-Con and see what it’s all about.”

When you are there, tell Jason hello. My take away with Jason is that he is a genuine guy who cares about the world around him, and those who take the time out of their day just to say hello. It’s rare to find famous people who are like that.

Oh, and keep an eye out for Andres Acosta from the El Paso Herald-Post, he’s going to be taking pictures of everything!

For more information on Jason David Frank, you can find him on Facebook or via his Virtual Training Academy website.

For schedule on stars at the photo booth, check out the video from RayWork Productions below.

TNTM: Justice League versus The Power Rangers

DC Comics and Boom Studios crossover

If you are in any comic book store for longer than a few minutes you will undoubtedly hear the “who would win in a fight between…” arguments. These conversations have been the staple of comic book conversations for as long as I can remember.

If the two parties were from the same publisher you could always cite historical references from earlier years with that publisher. The problem arises when the two parties in the theoretical fight are from different publishers. Since the publishers are competing for a bigger market share, they don’t like to share their characters with other publishers. If you saw crossover events it was usually between different titles under the same publisher…. until recently.

There seem to be a lot of crossover titles between publishers lately. Batman had the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles appear in Gotham. After that the favor was repaid and Batman had a crossover with the Turtles under the IDW imprint. Now the Justice League is crossing over with The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It seems like DC Comics has learned to play nice and share their characters with the other publishers… and us readers are reaping the benefits.

“Something very, very massive has happened in Angel Grove, in the Power Rangers’ world, and then another massive event sends one of our main characters, Zack, into the Justice League’s world”, said writer, Tom Taylor.

“I can’t tell you too much more, but there’s a bit of conflict, there’s struggle, there’s misunderstanding. Those are classic tropes that you want to see when hero teams that don’t know the other ones are heroes come together. A little bit of miscommunication leads to badness. But eventually, good too! And really it’s just a great opportunity to take these two heroes from two different worlds and bring them together in a way I don’t think anyone could see coming”, Taylor added.

When asked about the villains in the series Taylor responded “Well, we’re definitely going to see Lord Zedd. I can happily tell you that. Lord Zedd will appear in this book. And he is one of the biggest problems. The other big problem is a DC villain who we can’t actually announce yet, but make sure you get issue #2.”

Both publishers, DC Comics and Boom Studios are very excited about this epic crossover. Each company is placing their marquee characters into the other’s universe. We finally get to see what would happen when these two pop culture Goliaths band together to do what they do best, beat bad guys.

“DC and BOOM! Studios teaming up on this crossover is a dream come true for fans of Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the Justice League,” said Hank Kanalz, Senior Vice President, Editorial Strategy and Administration, DC Entertainment. “Stories like this are a great way to have that ‘what if’ itch scratched, combining favorite characters from different publishers in epic adventures.”

“Everyone at BOOM! is thrilled to be part of an event of this magnitude,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “We have iconic characters meeting for the first time that are beloved the world over! Our imaginations have been racing since the moment this kicked off with our friends at DC and Saban Brands. Get ready…this is one event that’s not to be missed.”

Press Release

Two of comics greatest teams team up for the very first time! Something terrible has happened in Angel Grove! When the Command Center is breached and the teleporters are damaged, Zack is flung into another universe, where he’s mistaken for a villain by a mysterious masked vigilante. Can the other Power Rangers get to their friend in time to save him from Batman? Co-published with BOOM! Studios.
