Prudential, Workforce Solutions Announce Finalists for ‘Spring Into Schools’ Math Grants

The Prudential Foundation and Workforce Solutions Borderplex’s STEM Initiative are making an impact by harvesting project-based learning programs within El Paso’s middle and high schools.

In December of 2015, Prudential Foundation announced a commitment of $870,000 to help build a next-generation workforce in El Paso. Prudential’s investment is now beginning to sprout results from two programs: the Prudential Math Challenge Competition created for high school students and MATHCOUNTS targeted at twelve middle schools.

The first Prudential Math Challenge Competition, which will be held in conjunction with the annual STEM+Art Fiesta hosted by Workforce Solutions Borderplex, is a math modeling competition that challenges high school students to respond to a real-world problem in real time.

The three finalist teams will compete at the El Paso Community College in Building B, located at 9050 Viscount, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm on Friday, April 8, 2016.

The Prudential Math Challenge Competition finalist teams are:

Coronado High School
Pebble Hills High School
Fabens High School

Winners will be announced immediately following the competition.

MATHCOUNT grants will also be announced during the STEM+Art Award Ceremony. The following middle schools will be awarded grants to start math clubs within in their schools:

Canutillo Middle School
Clint Junior High School
East Montana Middle School
Eastwood Knolls International School
Macarthur Intermediate School
Parkland Middle School
Riverside Middle School
Ross Middle School
Salvador H. Sanchez Middle School
Socorro Middle School
Tornillo Junior High
William D. Slider Middle School

Prudential funded MATHCOUNTS to increase math competency by offering funds to public middle schools in order to implement a nationally-recognized MATHCOUNTS program. This innovative model provides students real-world experiences that cannot be replicated in the classroom.

Participation in MATHCOUNTS during middle school will increase participation in the Prudential Math Challenge Competition for future years, as well as enhance interest and confidence in applied mathematics, a crucial competency for all STEM-related fields.
