UTEP’s Raven Bennett Named C-USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Month

UTEP sophomore Raven Bennett was named Conference USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Month announced by the league on Wednesday. She is the first to earn the honor since Danielle King was named WAC Athlete of the Month in 2003.

Bennett opened the 2016 fall season by posting a 7-0 mark and back-to-back flight championship titles in singles for the month of September. At the NM State Women’s Invitational, the sophomore defeated opponents of New Mexico State and Grand Canyon for the Gold Flight Singles title.

In doubles, Bennett and teammate Daphne Visscher took a third-place finish after two wins against Grand Canyon.

The Mesquite, Texas, native followed that performance with another successful one at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson with wins over time conference-foe UTSA, New Mexico State and Arizona to reach the championship round of the Blue Flight Singles. In the final round, Bennett faced a tough battle against Northern Arizona but came out with the championship title with a 7-6 (8), 7-5 win.

Bennett and Visscher once again paired up for a 3-1 record in doubles at the Wildcat Invitational. This Bennett’s second C-USA award her career.

The Miners will continue the fall schedule with the ITA Regional Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. held Oct. 12-16.

Five UTEP Tennis Athletes Earn ITA Scholar-Athlete Status

The UTEP women’s tennis team was named an ITA All-Academic team and had five players honored as ITA Scholar Athletes, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Thursday.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any program that fashions a team grade point average of 3.20 or above. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must have a grade point average of at least 3.50, be a varsity letter winner and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

The Miners earned team recognition by having a cumulative team grade point average of 3.53 on the year and student-athletes, Raven Bennett, Bethan Hayward, Vivienne Kulicke, Duda Santos and Lois Wagenvoort held a grade point average of 3.50 for the current academic year to secure the Scholar Athlete title.

Earlier this year, the entire eight-member team was placed on the 2016 Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and claimed five C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medals. The squad was also awarded the Athletic Director’s Academic Award for its outstanding GPA at the 42nd annual Dinner with the Miners last month.
