ESD: Don’t Be A Turkey, Recycle Thanksgiving Cooking Oil, Grease

City of El Paso Environmental Services Department encourages residents to recycle Thanksgiving cooking oil and grease at any of the City’s Citizen Collection Stations (CCS) starting Saturday, November 25.

Residents are encouraged to drop off cooking oil at one of the five sites. Never pour cooking oil or grease down the kitchen sink or toilet; doing so can clog drains, pipes and sewer lines.

If residents cannot take cooking oil or grease to a Citizen Collection Station, Environmental Services recommends putting the grease inside a jar or container, letting it solidify, then throwing it in the garbage. Grease can be chilled in the refrigerator to get it to harden.

Environmental Services does not recommended putting liquid grease or cooking oil in a jar or container and throwing it in the trash. The oil may get compressed in the garbage collection trucks, causing it to spill onto the streets and creating a safety hazard for drivers.

Cooking oil may be dropped off at the following collection sites:

  • 3510 Confederate (Far East)
  • 1034 Pendale (East)
  • 4501 Hondo Pass (Northeast)
  • 2492 Harrison (Central)
  • 121 Atlantic (West)

Residents do NOT need a water bill to drop off cooking oil. The CCS do not accept cooking oil from businesses or commercial customers.

The CCS locations are open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regular operating hours are Tuesday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CCS locations will be closed November 23 and 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
