The City of El Paso Environmental Services Department (ESD) encourages football fans to make a game-time decision to go green and recycle during football season.
“If we can remember to recycle plastic and aluminum beverage containers and rinse them before placing in the blue bin, we will be diverting waste from the landfill,” said Environmental Services Department Director Ellen Smyth. “We also need to prevent contamination at the recycling center by not putting non-recyclable items, such as food and glass, in the recycling bins.”
Whether fans attend a game or watch one on television, game gatherings can create a large amount of trash that will end up at the Greater El Paso Landfill.
Environmental Services estimates thousands of aluminum cans, plastic beverage containers and cardboard material will pass the recycle bin and be thrown in the trash before, during and after games.
The ESD has the following reminders when it comes to recycling:
- Set aside separate containers for trash and recycling. Aluminum cans, plastic bottles and cardboard packaged products are recyclable.
- Pizza boxes and Styrofoam cups and plates are NOT RECYCLABLE
- Purchase aluminum canned beverages
- Serve food on reusable plates that can be washed and used again. A move like this can reduce the amount of trash that may end up in the landfill.
The Environmental Services Department encourages everyone to recycle right, not just during football season but all year-round.
