Three Riverside schools partner to elevate STEM learning

Teachers at Ramona Elementary, Riverside Middle School and Riverside High School spent time this summer to hone their skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). By attending a STEM institute, they learned how to embed Project Based Learning within the curriculum.

Since Riverside High School was designated a T- STEM Academy by TEA this year, Ramona Elementary and Riverside Middle School’s science and math teachers are aligning their lessons to support future Riverside High School students in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

To compliment this, STEM challenges are being experienced and developed by teachers in order to elevate student learning.

Mrs. Pat Macias, 3rd grade teacher stated, “This training has been enlightening. I think it has provided a new mind set for teaching. This upcoming school year will be engaging and our children will have fun learning.”

Veronica DeAvila, Math teacher and Science coordinator at Riverside High School, says she feels proud that the feeder pattern is coming together to support Riverside’s T-STEM Academy. She feels the students will reap the benefits of this collaboration.

Ramona Elementary is embracing the Project Based Learning method as part of their teaching approach and has embedded STEM time during the school day four times per week.

“This is an exciting beginning toward becoming a model STEM elementary campus.” stated Ramona ES Principal Mrs. Irene Medlin.

The institute was made possible through an education grant from Freeport McMoRan.
