Back to Back: Morales Receives ‘State Coach of the Year’ Award

For a second year in a row, San Elizario High School (SEHS) coach Cesar Morales, received the ‘State Coach of the Year for Boys Cross Country’ award.

The honor is awarded on behalf of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

“It is truly an honor to receive this award once again for what WE have achieved,” Morales said.

“I say ‘WE’ because this is a group accomplishment— my assistant coach, Jorge Maese, and the Boys Cross Country team, also play an essential role and together we contribute to the success of the team.”

The NFHS bestows this prestigious award to one coach in each sport for each state association.

Recipients of this award reflect excellent coaching abilities on and off the athletic arena.

Morales will be recognized November 3rd during the 4A Boys awards ceremony in Round Rock, Texas.

Catching Up With Cross Country: San Eli Gearing Up for Another Run to State Championship

The San Elizario boy’s cross country team is still searching for the right combination, the perfect seven, to get them their fifth consecutive Class 4A state championship.

And it’s just not at the varsity level.

Even the junior varsity times matter.

“I don’t have my top seven set yet when it comes to who I’m taking to regionals,” said Cesar Morales, San Elizario’s head coach.

“I have two candidates on my JV team that could probably move up to varsity and the varsity team knows that. The way we look at it, we don’t run varsity or JV meets, we run for times. It’s a very healthy competition within our team and they support each other. They’re giving it their all and I’m very proud of that.”

Catching Up with Cross Country: San Eli Continues Their Winning Ways

San Elizario sophomore Edwin Gomez made it four individual championships in a row, winning the Loretto/Cathedral Invitational in 16:38.72 on Saturday morning.

“Everything I do is because of my coach,” Gomez said. “He has given me the best advise on how we, as a team, can get better. At practice he is always pushing us just a little bit more than we think we can go.”

Gomez, who won the UIL Class 4A country state title in a time of 15:36.16 as a freshman, help led San Elizario to its fourth consecutive state championships last fall.
