San Elizario Hosts First Election Since Inaugural City Council Elected

The incorporation of San Elizario took place via election in 2013 and in 2014, its first council was elected into office, now after four years, residents will have their first election.

In reality, city officials share that three elections should have been held, but were cancelled due to a lack of candidates running against the incumbents.

On May 5, 2018, eight people will by vying for the positions of mayor, alderperson place 4 and alderperson place 5.

“It has been a vote of confidence that our community has placed their trust in us, this first council, for these past four years. But we also welcome other members of our community to take the step towards public service. Our city deserves to see good leaders rise up and it’s a sign of a healthy democracy,” stated Alderperson Place 1 and Mayor Pro Tem Leticia Miranda.

David Aguirre Jr., a senior at San Elizario High School, Antonio Araujo, director of a local non-profit and San Elizario Independent School District Board Trustee and incumbent Maya Sanchez are all contending for the position of mayor.

Incumbent Rebecca Martinez-Juarez and non-profit director Maria Ortiz Covernali are vying for alderperson place 4. And incumbent George Almanzar, Paul Edward Johnson Jr., who is retired military and Connie Vasquez, also retired have filed to fill alderperson place 5.

 

Important dates in the City of San Elizario’s election process:

February 26, 2018 – Drawing for place on ballot

April 5, 2018 – Last day to register to vote for May 5th election

April 23, 2018 – 1st Day of early voting

May 1, 2018 – Last day of early voting

May 5, 2018 – Election day

The election will be held at the San Elizario Fire Department, 1415 San Antonio Street in San Elizario.
