The Socorro Independent School District Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. José Espinoza signed a proclamation declaring April as the Month of the Military Child and School Library Month.
The board also declared April 13 as Purple Up for Military Kids Day.
The Month of the Military Child proclamation declares that the “Socorro Independent School District recognizes the selfless acts of service performed by its brave members of the military and their devoted families.”
The district will salute military children all month long, and encourages citizens to join the special observance by connecting with military families and communities to provide support for children with parents in the military.
In addition, the district also will celebrate Purple Up for Military Kids Day on April 13. Everyone is encouraged to wear purple that day to acknowledge the strengths of our military-connected youth and the contributions and sacrifices of their parents.
SISD also asks the community to honor and celebrate school librarians and libraries for School Library Month in April.
SISD school library programs ensure students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The programs contribute to individual growth and development of all students, while fostering excellence and equity in education.
The library proclamation states, “The Board of Education entrusted school librarians in each school to teach the skills of locating and using information through traditional resources and new technologies, to provide literature appreciation activities, and to guide and encourage content and recreational reading to every student.”
The proclamations were presented by SISD students at the March 27 regular school board meeting.
