According to Business Insider Magazine, Sears Holdings Corporation – the parent company of both Sears and Kmart – distributed a document internally on Tuesday that revealed an additional 72 store closures nationwide, including four more here in the Borderland.
The document, published on their website, lists the location of 16 Sears stores, 49 Kmart stores and 7 Auto Centers set to be shuttered by September. Among the local stores on the list are two of the three remaining Kmarts in El Paso, and one each in Las Cruces and Alamogordo.
The El Paso stores closing will be the one located at 6375 Montana Boulevard, as well as the store at 411 Zaragosa Road in Ysleta. With the closure of all four locations, that will leave the region with only one – located at 655 Sunland Park.
This round of closures brings the total number of Sears/Kmart locations closed to 252. According to the Business Insider, nationwide, the total number of locations now sits at 1200, down from over 2,000 just five years ago.
