Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Montecillo Celebrates Life, Music, Legacy of Selena

April is the birth month of the beloved Queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez; and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Montecillo is celebrating with a weekend full of events and movie parties on Friday, April 13, through Sunday, April 15, 2018.

The theater will be screening Selena all weekend and making a party out of it. Selena Movie Parties will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 13, and continue through Sunday, April 15. They will feature sing-alongs, props and some cool, exclusive souvenir stickers while supplies last. Additional screenings are likely to be added.

In addition to screenings of her biopic, the Anything For Selenas celebration will kick off from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, April 13 in the Glass Half Full Taproom with Selena-inspired art and merchandise on display and for sale; and a Selena lookalike and dance party.

El Paso artist Jesus “Cimi” Alvarado will be painting a mural, designed exclusively for this event, live. The mural will be decorated and available all weekend as a photo booth for fans to snap a picture and share their love for Selena with friends.

On Saturday, the Selena celebrations continue with Selena trivia, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Glass Half Full Taproom, followed by another round of Selena karaoke and a lookalike contest from 8 to 10 p.m. Selena art and merchandise from local vendors will again be on display and for sale during Saturday’s activities.

“Cimi” Alvarado’s mural will be on display in the lobby all weekend for photo ops.

“Selena was already an icon before she was sadly killed in 1995,” said Analiza Guzman, Creative Director at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Montecillo. “Since her passing, her place in our hearts has only continued to grow alongside her cultural status as a pop star, and role model for young Mexican-American woman. It is a privilege for us to honor her life, music and legacy.”

Additional screenings may be added throughout weekend, based on demand.

The Anything For Selenas celebration is named after one of the most iconic scenes in SELENA in which one of her fans pledges to do “Anything for Selenas.” In addition to paying tribute to the life and music of the late and Queen of Tejano, the 1997 film helped launch Jennifer Lopez into superstardom.

The Wondering Latina: Music Icon Selena + MAC Makeup = Power & Beauty

It is finally here y’all! The Selena inspired MAC cosmetic line is officially set to launch in the fall. What I love most about this story was the inspiration that lead to this becoming a reality.

I first saw the petition floating around on Change.org demanding the cosmetic giant to acknowledge Latina life in the world of makeup. At the time the only Latina to have ever graced the face of MAC with a line was Raquel Welch in 2007.

Fast forward to last year when Las Vegas based makeup artist, José Antonio Figueroa, paid tribute to the Mexican-American Icon by creating a mock image of what it would look like if MAC cosmetics created a Selena line for fans. He posted it on instagram…and the rest is history.

The picture took off and was an instant hit; eventually it came across the feed of Los Angeles Power Latina, Patty Rodriguez (producer for ‘On Air With Ryan Seacrest,) who had been emailing MAC with the same request since 2013. She saw the image and quickly took action, creating an online petition on Change.org asking fans to make their voices heard and push the makeup mainstream company recognize Latina buyers.

The petition spread through social media, where I came across it, signed it and reposted it myself throughout my DFW and El Paso feeds.

In the Southwest region and for many young Mexican-American women and other Latina women, Selena is EVERYTHING to us still. Those of us “top millennials” that were very young when she passed, have now grown up, are making our place in the world and have taken her music and her memory with us.

gallery-1442017143-gettyimages-50437725It is no wonder that 20 years after her death there has been a resurgence of the Tejano Queen of Tex-Mex, La Reina, Selena.

Thank you, the power of the people, who united behind this ‘makeup movement’ this will be another first crossover for music icon; as women from all backgrounds go shopping in mainstream America for makeup, the Latino culture and influence will now be represented at the table through Selena.

Together with the Quintanilla Family, they have created this special exclusive line featuring palettes named after Selena’s biggest hits.

The line is set to hit stores later this year in October, currently there is no waiting list to get on. I just hope MAC is ready for the millennial Latina buying power, it is unlike anything they have ever seen.

I definitely will be waiting in line for mine!
