Carrasco Elementary Students Earn First-Ever ‘TEAM SISD All-Star Award’

Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco Elementary School recognized a group of outstanding students as the first-ever recipients of the TEAM SISD All-Star award.

The TEAM SISD All-Star Award is a character award program that debuted at SISD’s newest school, Carrasco Elementary. The students who exhibit outstanding character traits represented in the acronym TEAM — Trustworthiness, Empathetic, Accountable, and Mindful – were given the award.

Welcoming the All-Stars and their parents were Principal Jesse Sepulveda, SISD Board President Cynthia A. Najera, the Carrasco cheer team, and campus employees.

“Carrasco Elementary is a brand new school and we are proud to be the first to launch this recognition program,” Sepulveda said. “It’s great that our kids got to partake in this special ceremony. These moments mean a lot and they will remember them when they are older.”

A total of 63 students in grades Pre-K through fifth-grade earned the award. The scholars were called one by one to the stage where they were presented a certificate, sticker and a pencil. Students also had their photo taken by a special TEAM SISD All-Star bulletin board. The portraits will be displayed all month at their school.

“Earning the TEAM SISD All-Star award is a huge accomplishment for our students,” said President Cynthia A. Najera. “We are very proud to honor these students for being mindful of their community and those around them. We also thank their parents because they are a huge part of the reason they are receiving this award.”

The Carrasco students were excited to be the first All-Stars in SISD.

“It feels good to be respectful, responsible, honest and caring,” said Hailey Swart, a fifth-grade student and All-Star award winner. “All people are important and we need to respect one another.”

One male and one female student per class will be selected on a monthly basis based on exceptional character traits to earn the TEAM SISD All-Star award at Carrasco Elementary. The All-Star award will be expanded to all SISD campuses next school year.

“This is an awesome recognition program,” said Liz Camps, mother of a third-grade All-Star. “It gives students more reason to be kind and help their community. These are things we really want to emphasize in our children.”

New Socorro ISD Elementary School Meet-and-Greet Preps Faculty for Next Year

Administration, faculty and staff at Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco Elementary School gathered for the first time in preparation for the 2018-2019 school year.

The teachers of the Socorro Independent School District’s newest campus set goals to ensure they hit the ground running on July 30, the first day of school for the next school year.

“We are excited to be a part of something great and historical,” said Jesse Sepulveda, Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco Elementary School principal. “The goal is to start fresh and strong, so we can be ready to create those endless opportunities for children.”

“You get one chance to make a great first impression, and one chance to start a strong school,” Sepulveda said. “That’s why we are here, to get that chance to do it the right way. Strong foundations are important and we want the transition to be seamless for our students.”

After individual introductions, faculty members participated in team building activities and toured Purple Heart Elementary School to get a feel of their new campus. The team also worked on building curriculum structures; social, emotional learning structures; and college and career initiatives.

“I’m super excited to meet everyone and really honored to be able to transfer to this new school,” said Rita Cervantes, who is currently a kindergarten teacher at Chester E. Jordan Elementary School. “You can feel all the excitement and energy as soon as you walked into the meeting.”

A parent information night for the new elementary school will be 5:30 p.m. on May 25 in the Pebble Hills High School theater. Parents will have an opportunity to take a virtual tour of the new school and meet administrators, faculty and staff. In addition, informational booths with the school nurse, the counseling department, child nutrition services and police services will be available.

The teachers were excited to learn facts about their new campus, including:
  • The school was named after the late Sgt. Jose F. Carrasco, SISD’s first police sergeant who ensured the security of SISD students for more than 34 years.
  • The school mascot is the Buffalo and school colors are red, white and blue.
  • The school was built with Bond 2011 savings and will be designed similar to Purple Heart Elementary School.
  • The campus is located at 14900 Tierra Mirage.
