Socorro ISD Transportation Team Honored During National School Bus Safety Week

More than 12,000 Socorro Independent School District students begin and end their school day inside a bus. For employees in the SISD Transportation Department, they spend the school day ensuring students are safe as they are picked up, traveling and dropped off at their destinations.

To honor transportation employees’ commitment to student safety, the district recognized the department during National School Bus Safety Week with a special celebration.

“We have the best transportation department on the planet!” said Superintendent Dr. José Espinoza. “Our students feel safe when they ride our school buses! We appreciate the efforts and hard work of our transportation department. They are an integral part of Team SISD!”

Rito Meza, director of SISD transportation, also thanked SISD drivers, aides, mechanics, coordinators, dispatchers and clerks for their excellent service.

“It’s important that we recognize the work of bus drivers, monitors, and all other transportation employees nationwide,” said Rito Meza, director of transportation. “Transporting students to and from school safely can be a very stressful job, but they get the job done every day and with a smile.”

Maria Prieto, who has been an SISD driver for 17 years, agrees that her job comes with great responsibility.

“We have to look out for many little things such as checking for identifications before we release children to their parents,” she said. “We are very careful to follow procedures because we have to take care of the children.”

SISD drivers agreed that seeing the children arrive at their destination safe and happy makes their job worthwhile.

“We have to be aware of all of our surroundings because we carry precious cargo that’s worth more than anything else,” said Rodolfo Laureano III, a bus driver for nine years and a trainer. “I love listening to students sing and laugh while they’re on the bus.

Last school year, district bus drivers drove 3,758,347 miles escorting students to and from school and had more than 8,500 extracurricular activity runs. Despite the increase in student enrollment, some 700+ students for the last two years, the transportation team continues to meet the needs of students, parents and the SISD community.

“Good customer service is crucial in our district,” said Eddie Montellano, operational route specialist. “We train our employees to treat every student, parent, faculty, and staff with care.”

The SISD transportation motto, “No child left behind,” is why Margarita Parra loves to work for SISD.

“I live in the northeast but this is the district I prefer to work for,” Parra said. “We are all about the students. If a student gets there late, and we have already finished our route, we will go back for them.”
