El Paso Public Library Program aims to help El Pasoans Grow own Food

The El Paso Public Library has created the Sow.Grow.ReapEat program that provides local gardeners everything they need to successfully grow their own edible gardens.

Each library branch now has a collection of non-genetically modified fruit, vegetable, and herb seeds that may be borrowed with a library card.

Residents can borrow up to five seed packets per season but are encouraged to donate some of the seeds to the library after the seeds go to harvest in order to keep collections stocked.

Aside from seeds available for checkout, residents may also participate in free gardening and cooking workshops held at library branches. The workshops are designed to provide the basic understanding of how to grow and prepare food from a garden. Experts in the field, such as the El Paso Master Gardeners, present the workshops.

Upcoming gardening and cooking workshops are posted on the Sow.Grow.ReapEat website.

The Sow.Grow.ReapEat project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission. (2016).
