Computer Science Students HENAAC Bound

For the first time ever, El Paso Community College (EPCC) computer science students and their instructor were invited to attend the National Achievement Conference.

The Department of Computer Science at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) was recently awarded with the S-STEM Scholars program. In collaboration with the UTEP and EPCC Computer Science programs, UTEP will be providing several scholarships to EPCC students who will be majoring in computer science, preferably with concentration in cyber-security.

This year three outstanding computer science students were funded.

Students Valentin Becerra, Omar Corrales, Sergio Galindo along with their instructor Dr. Christian Servin were requested by UTEP to attend the Great Minds in STEM-Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference (HENAAC) held in Anaheim, California, October 5 th – 9 th .

These three students have served as peer-leaders and leaders in the Computer Science Club at EPCC.

“This opportunity will help my computer science students to increase their professional, programming, and social skills, building a smooth and effective transitioning path from EPCC to UTEP.” said Dr. Servin.

The S-STEM scholars program promotes preparing and supporting high-qualified students with financial need through Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI) evidence-based educational practices. This effort involves providing scholarships to low-income, academically talented students.
