Video: TNTM Interview with Cas Anvar

We had the privilege of speaking with Cas Anvar via phone about his roles in SyFy’s “The Expanse” and FX’s “The Strain”.

Official Bio

Cas Anvar, whose career has skyrocketed in the past year with a starring role on SyFy Network’s hit new #1 series The Expanse and a choice role in the Oscar nominated feature, ROOM, is on a career trajectory most actors dream of.

Halfway through filming the second season of Alcon Entertainment’s flagship show, his role of the galaxy’s top pilot, ‘Alex Kamal,’ has been expanded on the network’s most expensive original show in the history of SyFy earning him star status in an ensemble which includes Thomas Jane, Shohreh Agadashloo, Steven Strait, Wes Chatham and Dominique Tipper.

The popular series has just begun shooting season 3 which is expected to premiere on SyFy late 2017-early 2018..

Cas returns on the fourth and final season of FX’s critically lauded, The Strain, which currently airs on Sundays at 10PM night and premiered on July 16th to phenomenal numbers. Cas’ recurring role of “Sanjay Desai,” an opportunistic young businessman eager to place himself in a protected position amidst the chaos of the predominant story line of the inhabitants rapidly falling to an evil epidemic.

The Strain hails from showrunner/executive producer/writer Carlton Cuse, along with co-creators/executive producers/writers Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. Gary Ungar, J. Miles Dale, Bradley Thompson, David Weddle and Regina Corrado serve as executive producers. FX Productions is the studio. Few know the series is shot on the same soundstage at The Expanse (when the SyFy show is on hiatus).

The Canadian-born actor and voice-over star who graduated from Montreal’s prestigious National Theatre School (Canada’s Julliard) first came to popular attention for his portrayal of Kambiz Foroohar in the Cruise/Wagner film Shattered Glass, nominated for 4 Spirit Awards and a Golden Globe.

Cas’ versatility on the big screen ranges from roles opposite Ben Affleck in the Oscar winning feature film Argo (garnering a SAG “Outstanding Performance” Award), Jake Gyllenhaal in the Sci-Fi adventure Source Code, John Cusak in the suspense thriller The Factory, and co-starring in Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal opposite Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta Jones and Stanley Tucci.

Guest TV appearances include CBS’ hit NCIS: LA and Intelligence, USA network’s In Plain Sight, TNT’s Leverage, Fox’s 24, ABC’s Castle, co-hosting PBS 2015 Christmas special to resounding critical acclaim and as the lead character in SyFy’s 2015 series, Olympus. He is a favorite on the talk show circuit for his exceptional anecdotes and impeccable delivery.

An accomplished stage actor, Anvar has played countless leading roles in Shakespeare’s most famous plays. Cas, highly respected as the Founding Artistic Director for over 18 years of the acclaimed Shakespeare-in-the-Park touring company – Montreal-based Repercussion Theatre – continues to support their work with frequent visits.

The fluently trilingual (English, French and Farsi) Anvar credits part of his wide-ranging creativity to his exotic cultural and spiritual heritage. He splits his time between Toronto and Los Angeles.

TNTM: The Strain season 4 will be the last

The Strain paints vampires in a new light

Funny story.  Guillermo del Toro originally pitched The Strain to TV networks but none of them wanted it.  He did not give up on his story and brought it to comic books.  The comic books were well received.  Then TV networks started approaching Guillermo about adapting The Strain comics into a TV series.  It makes you wonder.

Vampires in The Strain are not pretty.  They do not shine or sparkle in the sunlight.  There is nothing romantic at all about The Strain vampires.  Guillermo treats vampirism as an infection.  This infection causes drastic changes to the body and mind.  Most vampires are mindless parasites under the control of one of the few ancients.  One of these ancients, The Master, is no longer in hiding and has plans to take over the world.  Of course, everyone knows when you take over the world you have to start in New York City.

A group of rag-tag survivors along with a hybrid human/vampire have spent the last couple of seasons doing their best to stop The Master from taking the Big Apple.  So far the vampire infection has been isolated to the city.

FX has set an end date for The Strain

Currently in the middle of its third season, FX said the series has been renewed for a fourth and final season that will air next summer (2017).

The series is based on the book trilogy of the same name from Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The series was originally going to run for three seasons, one for each book.  Show-runner Carlton Cuse said they realized they needed one more season to fully tell the story.

“It is a true joy to work at FX where creative intentions always comes first,” said Cuse in a statement. “Our original plan was for the series to last three years. Once we began telling that story it expanded to be more. After finishing the writing on season three Guillermo, Chuck, and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season. We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic season four. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”

In a joint statement, Nick Grad and Eric Schrier, Presidents of Original Programming, added. “Though we’re sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season’s dramatic conclusion.”
