Hospitals of Providence to Hold Free ‘Strides Against Stroke’ Event Saturday

The Hospitals of Providence will hold Strides Against Stroke, a free health-screening event and walk this Saturday, May 12, 2018, from 7am to 11am at Cielo Vista Mall.

“Strides Against Stroke is a completely free event and a way to help educate the community to know and understand the signs and symptoms of stroke,” said Cristina Ramirez, Stroke Coordinator for The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus. “Through health screenings, we are able to assess El Pasoan’s risks for stroke, in hopes to help prevent an event from occurring.”

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States – and a leading cause of disability. In El Paso, many residents are at risk of stroke because of high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

The Hospitals of Providence continues to be committed to this cause and remains the “Primary Stroke Center” at Memorial and Sierra Campus.

Hospital officials share, “Every year, close to 800,000 Americans suffer a stroke, of which 80 percent would be preventable with the right education and care. Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease which affects the arteries leading to the brain and the arteries within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, and that part of the brain starts to die.”

The community is invited to come and participate in this free event. Additional activities include education booths, face painting and activities for the kids.

“Education is the best prevention when it comes to stroke,” said Ramirez. “Every second matters and recognizing the signs can save your life.”

Additional Information

It’s important for El Paso residents to know the following warning signs of stroke and teach them to others – because with stroke, every second counts:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg – especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause
  • Stroke is a medical emergency – call 911 immediately if you or someone you know experiences symptoms.

Learning to recognize the warning signs of stroke and acting quickly when they occur can mean the difference in surviving a stroke and minimizing long-term disability, or being physically and mentally devastated and dying from stroke.
