Students from across the Borderland will be front and center at two of the region’s largest Science and Engineering fairs this weekend.
El Paso area students, from elementary to high school, will be showcasing their science and engineering projects at the annual Sun Country Regional Science & Engineering Fair on March 4 at Pebble Hills High School.
More than 550 students are expected to exhibit 485 projects. The projects are broken down into 22 categories, including Animal Science, Robotics and Intelligent Machines, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Materials Science, Embedded Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Mathematics.
Students will present their work, giving formal explanations and answering questions from the volunteer judges. First, second and third place winners will advance to the 2017 ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair March 31-April 1 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.
State winners then advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair on May 14-19 in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, just across the state line in New Mexico, the New Mexico State University College of Engineering will host the Southwest Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
The event is free and open to the public from 12:30-1:30 p.m. when more than 100 middle and high school students will speak with guests and judges about their projects. The awards ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Corbett Center Ballrooms is also free and open to the public.
First, second and third place awards will be given in a number of categories related to life and physical sciences. Also a number of special awards will be earned by the students. Competitors will also vie for specialty awards provided by sponsors.
The Southwest Regional Science and Engineering Fair is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Regional science and engineering fair competitors will be eligible to compete at the state competition, March 31-April 1, in Socorro, New Mexico.
Two seniors from the state competition will earn a place to compete at the International Fair, May 14-19, in Los Angeles.
